What an amazing performance. Since I began going to rock concerts 33 years ago - and thanks largely to the fact that I spent twenty of the ensuing years as a music journalist - I've seen over 2,000 live shows. I'd have to rank last night's Stevie Wonder concert at Humphrey's By The Bay in San Diego as one of the top 10 best concerts I've ever seen, hands down.
The musicianship of Wonder's 11-piece band (which included his beautiful daughter, Alisha) was exceptional, the set list was one big hit parade (see below), and having such an important artist just a few feet away, sing, playing, and just "hanging out" with the crowd for over two hours, was a truly remarkable experience. Not something I can say about the vast majority of those 2K + shows I've witnessed.
Here's most of what he played, in no particular order:
Love's In Need Of Love Today (just Stevie playing the piano and singing, with his daughter seated by his side)
My Cherie Amour
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
Superstition
Too High
Livin' For The City
Golden Lady
Higher Ground
Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing
Sir Duke
I Wish
Isn't She Lovely
Master Blaster (Jammin')
Ribbon In The Sky
I Just Called To Say I Love You
Overjoyed
Part-Time Lover
Another Star
I know I'm forgetting a couple more.
My advice: if you don't already have tickets to one of Stevie's concerts near you, get 'em. Now.
