OT: STOP IT with the fucking cover albums!!!

Postby strangegrey » Thu Aug 30, 2007 11:47 pm

Now I see Queensryche is pulling this shit!!!!

I'm sick of it....are these twats so creatively spent that they can't cobble together another album of half-ass shit....that they have to record other people's half ass shit?

WTF!??!?!

From Def Leppard to Tesla to Poison to Queensryche to a pile of other imaginationally challenged fuckwad bands....I'm SICK OF IT.

No one wants to hear Joe Elliott's take on shitty David Bowie or T-Rex or yet another album with Your mamma dont dance by poison.......

I'm putting every one of you rock bands on notice (and I know you fucking read this board!!!) If you can't get back to writing and recording your OWN material.....FUCKING RETIRE!!!

I second that, dude.
Let's see...over the past 5 years...Rush (BUT...to be fair...this was a rushed ep just to tour behind something aside from the 30th anniversary in '04) Styx, Leppard, Tesla, Queensryche....and I KNOW there are a few others...they just escape me right now.
OH YEA...there was Liam doing that shitty cover of Nothin' But A Good Time. Sounded like a karaoke singer. EESH.
OH SHIT...That was me.

Johnny Cash's last three or four cover albums were brilliant though. It all depends on the artist. And Queensryche are completely useless so I share your lack of enthusiasm for their cover album at least....

I really enjoy the Tesla "Real to Reel" album. Great version of some great 70's tunes.
Also, Shaw/Blades "Influence" is a good one.

When done right, a covers album can work for me.

Hi Strangegrey!

I did! :)

I for one happen to totally dig Def Leppard's Yeah album. I love those songs and the the way Def Leppard did them. It happens to be a favorite of mine as are they.

I didn't like it at first, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. Them opening with "Hell Raiser" last tour was awesome. 8)

Singers love songs and I know there are certain "covers" I'll always sing. It's indulgent, but some people love the idea of their favorite singers doing covers.

Tough call

Postby StoneCold » Fri Aug 31, 2007 1:14 am

I generally don't like covers. Especially if the original is great.

Can't stand the covers of Faithfully (I don't care if Cain wrote it, he shouldn't sing it!). Perry MADE that song, end of story.

On the other hand, if Perry were to release a album of covers of his favorite songs, that's another story. I'd be all over that.

As for the bands mentioned above, I agree that so many bands doing covers is pretty lame. Spend that time coming up with at least 2 or 3 GREAT new songs that will get people's attention.

I was so hoping for that live - they didn't sing that at the few I went to! Songs from that disc live were Rock On and 20th Century Boy.

Sorry.. but IMO that album was not one of my favorites. Some of the songs like "Rock on" and a couple others are tolerable at best. :?

Agreed. The only covers album I own that I like much at all is Rush's "Feedback".

The only other one I can think of that I own is Styx's "Big Bang Theory". There are a couple of good tunes but it's pretty horrible overall.

I DO have to say that I love Tommy's versions of Summer In The City and Wishing Well. VERY well done. But the rest of the album I can do without. TOTALLY disposable otherwise.

This summer I had a chance to listen to many cover songs that the good people on the JSS forum shared with me that he has done! And I maintain that I like them BETTER than the originals! They aren't all on one cover album - they are on several, but I would buy that in a heartbeat if they were (I would buy them anyway on each one)! So some covers albums should be made!! 8)
