He didn't bail to tour with Sammy.....Eddie had cancer in the late 90's, and announced he was cancer-free shortly before the Sam/Dave tour in 2002.
So nice try, but that's not a relevant point. There was no Van Halen at that point. There was no band at all. So Mike didn't bail on anything, or do anything wrong whatsoever.
Eddie is the one who is totally at fault. He's the reason for all the inactivity, all the silence all those years.....nobody else.
VH were touring and recording in the late 90's. They were in the studio in 99. They were in the studio with Dave in 2000. Eddie was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and he released a press statement on the day or the day after the Sam And Dave press confrence in 2002 that he was "cancer free and given a bill of good health." So in 2001 Eddie was fighting for his life and that was the first year MA went on tour with Hagar and there was still a Van Halen. The band never once said they broke up. What do you expect when a band member is fighting cancer? Of course they took some time off. MA could have called Eddie,he could have stuck around LA and offered him support. I'm sure when he was in chemo therapy he wasn't thinking about calling his bass player. He was thinking of his wife and his marriage falling apart and thinking of his son. MA knows Eddie's phone number.
Wrong again, the Sam/Dave tour was in 2002. MA never toured with Sammy before that, to my recollection.
VH did an album and tour with Gary in 1998. They attempted working on some new material with Gary after that. It is very questionable whether Mike actually played bass on any of the VH3 tunes. Probably not. Also questionable whether he played on the CGTSNM and MWM. So all Eddie was using Mike for was touring, and Eddie wasn't even happy about doing that....he'd wanted and tried to replace Mike since the Fair Warning days.
They did briefly work with Dave a couple of times, but that was very short-lived.
Again, the Hagar/Roth tour didn't start until mid-2002. Mikey did NOT tour with Sammy before that.
Eddie's fight with cancer had long been over at that point. It had long been over WAY before he actually announced he was cancer-free.
They had done nothing with any singer since early 2000. That was only a brief flirtation with Dave. So basically, they had done almost nothing since Gary left, which was in 99, I think.
Yet Eddie and Alex were "jamming daily", according to Eddie, all the whole while.
Once again, there was no Van Halen band at that point in 2002. None. Not even an inkling of a band. Remember, your hero-who-can-do-no-wrong Dave also went on tour with Sammy that year, just like Mike did. Why is that okay?
And finally, no version of Van Halen did anything until 2004....so if Mike had never toured with Sammy, that would have been 4 years of sitting on his ass waiting on the Eddie to freaking do SOMETHING. And yeah, I'm sure Mike has Eddie's number....what good did that do him? You think he could have gotten Eddie out of his bottle long enough to make up with Sammy or Dave and get a band together? Sorry, but Mike was essentially out of the band already at that point in 2002.
Only reason he was included on the 2004 tour was that Sammy wouldn't do it without him...and even then, Eddie made him sign away his rights to a band he'd been in since the early 70's just to tour.
I think Dave summed it up best a few years back when he said "Edward Van Halen, without a guitar in his hands, is a crummy human being".
