Mickey Thomas fronted Journey would sound like this

Postby Maro » Sat Sep 01, 2007 10:45 pm

question from other topic:

hoagiepete wrote:Has anyone heard Mickey Thomas sing a Journey song? Starship surely can't be drawing much. Last I heard him he can still sing great, just can't decide how he would be with Journey.

Closest to how would sound Mickey Thomas fronted Journey is song Surrender from Over The Edge featuring Mickey Thomas cd.
This song is written by Neal Schon & Jack Blades, and Neal is playing guitar on it.
There is one other song (One World) written by Schon & Blades on that cd, but Neal isn't playing on it, and there is one song written by Jonathan Cain (Eyes Wide Open), also without Jonathan playing on it...

I'm listening it right now... realy good stuff...
Too bad that Mickey did only this one after Starship's Love Among The Cannibals...
Seems like he's satisfied with doing greatest hits live...

Hmm, nothing really hitting me here. Bad drum sounds too. Is this the same guy that produced the Vertigo albums??

Shame with all that talent.

Funny you should bring this up....

Because Mickey Thomas WAS in the running for Journey, back in 1984 - during Steve's "Street Talk" success....Steve was thinking about leaving Journey at that time.

The other choice was (the Late) Brad Delp. :(

I've heard the rumour about Mickey between Jefferson Starship's Nuclear Furniture demise and Starship's Knee Deep At The Hoopla success, but for Brad Delp I hear for the first time...

He sounds like Augeri.

MT's album scores an 80, he's cool as fuck and always will be. There's more to this dude than meets the eye. Look at Jefferson now a freakin' religious weird waste of time. Starship rocked and anything he touches turns gold. Thank God he didn't join Journey.

Good point. He's certainly been around longer.

Again, Steve Augeri sound like Mickey Thomas...

Mickey Thomas had first touch of fame as Elvin Bishop's vocalist with song "Fooled Around And Fell In Love", #3 single in 1976.

Steve Augeri had first touch of fame with Tall Stories in 1991., on much smaller scale.

movie Dream a Little Dream,, i refuse to watch it now because im afraid it will be
out dated and dumb,, but at the the time, it was a fun flick, mickey thomas nailed the title
song.. this is the song,, dont know what the video is.. its stupid.. but the music is there..

I'd rather see Thomas continue Starship and get some albums out.

If we put Over The Edge project aside, seems like Mickey Thomas isn't specially interested in recording new Starship albums... he has his own "dirty dozen" which he exploits relentlessly with his backing band so there really isn't much need for new matherial... seems like Neal & Jon were hanging with him couple of months ago, so good old Mickey gave them some business advices...

If Augeri sounds similar to anyone in particular, it's Mickey. Neither one of them sounded anything like Perry to me.
Both Mickey and Augeri need alot of their own stacked background vocals piped in while they are singing over them to sound full. If Neal and Jon wanted an Augeri clone....they could hire Mickey. Back in the day, Mickey's vocals would have blown Augeri off the map, though.

Mickey Thomas has some damn good pipes. The Jefferson Starship album with Stranger on it has some great toons. I do consider We Built This City to be one of the most annoying songs of all time. I really hate that song. When Mickey 1st joined they had some great tunes. Oh and the song JAne ! How could I forget that one...

There are some mighty tunes on Starship's last album, Love Among The Cannibals...
Grace Slick was out at that point, so Mickey was sole lead vocalist... like on Freedom At Point Zero and most of Modern Times...

Love the song and the album Freedom At Point Zero.

Just changing a few words around.

With David Lee back in Van Halen, look for a Sammy Hagar fronted Journey real soon!!!!

Heheh, no chance... Sammy Hagar is successful enough on his own... and he had two stints with Neal already...
HSAS project in 1984. (album Through The Fire) and Planet US in 2002. (no recorded matherial)

Thanks for the links to this. I'm going to try to obtain this album.

I do hear some similarity with Augeri, but I think Thomas could sing rings around him. He very well may not be a fit, but it would be interesting. A known name...similar to Hagar with Van Halen...may be a way to go.

I find the bio interesting..."Mickey grew up listening to gospel music, but was inspired to become a singer after attending a Beatles concert at age 14. His later influences included soul artists Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding." Sound familiar to someone else you know?

I've been a fan of Mickey since his Elvin Bishop days. I won a few beers on a bet at a show he was on the bill as a solo act, when my friends didn't believe me he sang on Fooled Around. He ended up singing it that night.

Starship lost me after "Jefferson" and Freedom at Point Zero though.
