I'm sorry you've had that label put on you, Fyre. I own my own company, so I'm not planning to fire myself. However, my PC was running VERY slowly a few weeks ago, and I went in and deleted a bunch of porn that was linked through this site and other non-porn sites I frequent. It seems, however, that once you have the "bug" in your system, it is very difficult to completely get rid of it. I get probably 20 emails a day for Viagra and Cialis. If anyone knows how I can get rid of this stuff completely, let me know!

When I was working for someone else, I NEVER went on websites for personal interests on a work computer. I was an elementary school teacher, so anything that was connected to porn in any way would have been very bad. I never had time to surf the net at work back then anyways! When I was working for another company, I was in cubicle land. My boss was a jerk and she would have had a heart attack if she caught me visiting personal-interest web sites on a work computer.

in all sincerity man,, the I.T.'s at your job know your not a porn surfer,, everytime you get on the web you leave a cookie and a temp internet file.. IF you were searching porn , you would have 100' -1000's of these,, you dont !!! you have 1 each time .. .. these I.T.'s are just scanning the server for the words "sex".."girl" ..ect.. . its a red flag if it comes up,,

Exactly. Most companies make a system log entry on the server level at the very split second ANY site/IP is accessed. The reports are run ad hoc or ex post facto. Doesn't matter. You're caught. If you're not being questioned about it, someone isn't looking at the reports, or someone just doesn't care. But I guarantee you, this is all security based, not 'whos a perv' based. And security is only getting tighter. You may not ever be officially busted, but someday you'll notice that your access to these places has been taken away. When I worked IT security, that is exactly how we did it. Never saw a real reason to bust somebody over it because we allowed it. Therefore, the indirect punishment was the individual realization that access had become denied. However, the rumors were fun to hear when we began clamping down on access. And funny, instantly there was more real work being done...not to mention that our reports volume dipped significantly.

Btw, we used to run work station reports too. These included users that were deleting cookies and temp internet cache, and at what times of the day. Actions such as these are security risks also because it means that somebody is trying to cover-up something. Sometimes, these reports were used for disciplinary measures...or at least, users were questioned.

My advice? Don't do it. Big Brother IS watching.

Oh man... it's NOT bullshit. My wife works for another company very much like my own. They've talked about monitoring KEY STROKES. They could see what she's typing, what apps she uses, read her emails (like they don't already), check her internet stuff, etc.

I keep waiting for them to put orthoscopic cameras on my chair so they can see what I've had for lunch!

Seriously, it's THEIR computer. They have a right to do what they want. BUT if they cannot deal with the fact that sometimes things come from other sites, yet sites not being looked at DIRECTLY, then they need to pull the damn thing off my desk. Also, if you're giving 100% at your job, which I do, that might save you... until somebody has a problem with you and just wants to be an ass and get you fired, which does happen. Or budget cuts need to happen and then they look for any justification necessary. Ugh...

I get a fair share of Viagra spams but our system does a good job of filtering them out. I wish I knew the answer to those, too!

I've learned my lesson, too. It will never happen again for me because I've asked it to be cut. Even if I changed my mind and kept it I'd still be at risk. What if I'm doing work-related stuff and I enter a site that has some crazy link to an adult content site? I'm done for sure.

No way. Get rid of it. As it stands now I'm higher up on the chopping block should the company want to make cuts. That's a higher place I never thought I'd be!

I don't know if my company does this or not, but I don't have a problem with it if they do. If I ran a business, I'd have measures in place to make sure my systems weren't compromised by employees surfing for porn on my network. I wouldn't want an employee who wasted my time and money surfing the internet either. Most employers don't mind a certain amount of internet surfing, but there are people who spend hours doing it instead of their jobs.

For me I work so intensely that I often need to "look away" from what I'm doing. Flipping over to check out this site and other forums gives me a moment to actually think through certain work things - as ridiculous as that sounds. Heck, I've resolved work-related stuff while in the shower or sitting on the toilet at home - MANY times. I've even resolved stuff while grocery shopping or just walking with our kids in the park. That's just how my mind works.
