Anybody catching all the Elvis Presley hubbub on the tube lately? For my money, he was absolutely the best of all time. Having said that, I would love to see Steve Perry do an Elvis cover CD. EP never really got high on the register, but dude sang with so much soul and emotion, like Espee did.

I can see Perry doing these tunes....Cyndy, call Perry or better yet, float me the dudes digits and I will make the call. I would think this generation should appreciate the King's contribution to music and believe it would be cool to hear EP's tunes on the radio, and none better to deliver them than Espee himself.

I was never an Elvis fan. He did have a beautiful voice, but then so did Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. In fact I liked Dean Martin better. The point being that none of them ever created anything. They just sang what was put in front of them.

if any dont know about sam cooke and his demise ,, its quite a terrible story,, gunned down in his underware by a mad mom.. supposed to be self defense,, but her story never added up,, sam c. was most likely murdered... different times,, different perceptions...

You are correct about Dean Martin..This younger generation don't know what they missed with the RAT PACK!!!!
Frank's voice was just OK...it was his delivery!
But SP is still the best...

Sam Cooke! I would love to hear his rendition of Bring It On Home To Me. Wouldn't mind hearing Jeff on that one either doing harmony. Lou Rawls did it on this song with Sam, and the two voices together are just fantastic.

I voted for Sam. I've always loved Elvis, 'tho. I remember reading that SP didn't really get into Elvis except for one song (Jailhouse Rock, maybe?) I do think Elvis had a lot of soul & sadness coming through his voice. I will also admit I still like watching those cheesy Elvis movies!
Speak of the devil...Sam Cooke was just singing on a t.v. commercial - one of those music collections for Soul music.

Did you see the special the other night? Faith Hill and Daughtry both did great covers, but I was really impressed by Elvis himself.
& it did remind me of Perry. One thing they have in common is the command they had over their amazing voices. Technically there might be better voices out there, but neither can be matched in delivery, imo,
which I think is the brick wall Jrny keeps hitting …


If Perry can still do that Faithfully-era deep, smooth voice – wow, what a great idea to cover some of Elvis’ sultrier songs.

But if he can’t, and new music is out, then I vote for a Sam Cooke cover album. I think he could still do those songs in his sleep, lol

Hell, I'd love him covering Sesame Street songs at this point.

A cover album would be predictable and wasteful. Only for the reason that considering how long he's been gone from the limelight you KNOW he has tons of material that if he were to spend that much time, effort, and boot in a studio making an album, why not just do his own thing.

I voted for Sam Cooke too Carol and you're absolutely right about the younger generation not appreciating the Rat Pack. As much as I like George Clooney his Ocean's 11 just doesn't have the coooooooooolness factor of the original.

You're also right about SP being the best. He has the soulfulness of Sammy, the coolness of Dean, and the showmanship of Frank all in one voice.

I remember in the 50's only having Patty Page, Perry Como etc. Ugh, my moms music. Then came Elvis. That is why he made it so big. HE HAD NO COMPATITION plus he gyrated his hips on the Ed Sullivan show. HORROR and SHOCK nationally took place ! He had great movies, so he was talented. The Beatles moved him aside in 1964. They were a new generation that could play live and WRITE their hits and therefore control their careers.My mother thought the mop tops were horrible. I was taking piano at the time. I told her, mom symphonies will play their music. In 1969 The Boston Pops played Michelle and Yesterday. HA ! to her. They lost out to ELTON 1970 Your Song and then Led Zep and Aerosmith followed by JOURNEY, Styx, Foreigner,Queen etc. Music evolves but our 70's-80's music was real and another generation has embraced it as their's.
