Where were the hard songs on Arrival? Did I miss them? All I remember is hearing about seven ballads and a couple of mid-tempo shufflers and that's about it.....? I Can See It In Your Eyes from TBF is heavier than any of those wet lettuce songs....

4 Rock/Hard rock tunes = Higher Place, World Gone Wild, All the Things (which I hate), Nothin' Comes Close
5 Pop/rock tunes = Signs of Life, I Got a Reason, Live and Breathe, To Be Alive Again, We Will Meet Again
6 Ballads = All the way, Loved by You, With Your Love, Lifetime of Dreams, Kiss Me Softly, I'm Not That Way
1 Blues = Livin' to Do

World Gone Wild rocks harder than ICSIIYE.

If you did the same for TBF the breakdown would be pretty much the same. Anyway...isn't it amazing that a record which has SIX ballads has developed a reputation for being heavy? I mean...ROR only has two.

Really..

Postby Journey69 » Sat Sep 29, 2007 10:17 am

Matthew, your kidding right? ok..wow..where do I start..How about, all the things, higher place,I got a reason, world gone wild(one of neal's best riff's since be good to yourself),live and breathe(semi ballad),and we will meet again(totally reminded me of a steve perry journey song..) They definitely went harder when perry left..even live and breathe would have been one of the harder songs on TBF..And for the record,I would love to hear the story from neal and jon about some of the things that have happened..We have Jeff's side..and it could be true..We heard Sammy's side..and that could be true..THe only thing I know is they are both stand up guys..But even after Perry, they put out quality music..If your a perry backer and want nothing else, then yes Augeri isn't gonna work for you..Don't tell me the songs were bad..DO you know how many people I got into Journey when Augeri was in the band..Lots..They all loved Arrival and went nuts..I know its one of my favorites..I would rather have them going forward without perry and see what they can make..If they just got this guy to tour and do the dirty dozen, that would be pretty disappointing and my views would change..By the way...I love Jeff's music..awesome!

I never thought it was "heavy" but it does have a more rocking feel to it overall than TBF, in my opinion. Anyway, here's how I would split up TBF...

5 Rock/Hard Rock tunes = Message of Love, One More, Castles Burning, Can't Tame the Lion, I Can See it in Your Eyes
3 Pop/rock tunes = If He Should Break Your Heart, Forever in Blue, Colors of the Spirit,
7 Ballads = When You Love a Woman, Don't Be Down on Me Baby, Still She Cries, When I Think of You, Easy to Fall, It's Just the Rain, Trial By Fire,
1 Reggae = Baby I'm a Leavin' You

TBF seems more laid back probably because there are 7 ballads and less pop/rock tunes.

Raised on Radio=
3 Rock/Hard Rock = Girl Can't Help It, Be Good to Yourself, Raised on Radio,
5 Pop/rock = Positive Touch, Suzanne, Once You Love Somebody, I'll Be Alright Without You, It Could Have Been You
3 Ballads = Happy to Give, The Eyes of a Woman, Why Can't This Night Go on Forever

We've had this conversation many times before Dave...but I still think IJTR and TBF aren't ballads.

They're certainly much closer to being ballads than, say, "Livin' to Do", which is a slow tune, but much more of a blues song, so it fits in that genre better. IJTR and TBF are ballads, the latter of which I really like, actually.

It was originally a bonus track on the Japanese release of TBF and it's now included as a bonus track on the reissued version here in the U.S.

Hey Journey 69 - I've met one guy who said Arrival got him back into Journey. But most people I'm in touch with about Journey hate that album with a passion. Honestly...it still makes my hackles rise even typing in the word 'Arrival'....

You see I'd say that IJTR and TBF are slow tunes. WYLAW is unambiguously a ballad.....

I became a huge Journey fan after first seeing Journey live with Augeri, in one of the first concerts they ever did with him. "Arrival" solidified it. It's not one of my favorites in the Journey catalogue, but I like it better than TBF and about equally with ROR.

I'm just using the term "ballad" as a generic, catch-all, term for slow tunes.

I agree

I saw Journey with my brother who is very skeptical..He gave it a shot and loved it..How can you possibly say Arrival was bad? Just because Perry isn't in it..It's funny how so many Perry loyalists just bash a great album just because someone unfamiliar is in it..I thought Augeri was great..Not close in range to Perry, but c'mon, the guy is a freak of nature..I like Generations also..Not all of it..everyones songs sucked but augeri's and Dean's..Plus,why don't they do self titled album songs anymore..ie..Escape,Frontier..Perry made a big deal out of that..They should have kept that going..

The songs on "Arrival" are good ones, for the most part. If Perry had sung on that one, the Perry-ites would be falling all over themselves about how great the tunes are, how his vocals sound so mature, etc., etc.

Just because? Yes - just because. Just because they traded the world's greatest and most soulful singer for a man with no vibe.

I would have liked to see him with Journey..I would have liked to have seen them do an album with Jeff..Why would they boot him without telling him..? I think the new guy will do the older stuff justice..They should do an album with him right away and tour with new stuff more than old..We've heard the old stuff so much..I just listened to something to hide..How could anyone ever duplicate the end of that song? Its freaking incredible how high he can get..Like I said,Freak of nature!!

Go kill yourself. Arnel is a member of Al Qaeda. He's going to blow up the wild throng of 300 people that show up at the Kansas state fair next summer.

Well it was against my better judgement to join and post on this site..I've read some pretty classless posts..Doubt I'll stick around long..Just wanted to see what was going on with the group..I googled it and came up with this classy site..Give me a break..I love how so many Perry loyalists stick by this guy, when he left the band hanging not once but twice..Then goes behind Neal's back, with Jon and starts ROR,fires Ross and Steve..Are you kidding me..?I don't think he made the brightest decisions in the world either..He sounds kinda selfish to me..

Sure - that's all in the minus column. But the plus column is something else isn't it? You only have to put on a classic Journey album to know why we stick by the guy....

The guy leaves his fans in hiatus for 10 yrs and for what? So he can live his life? So a girlfriend dumps you just because, and then comes back with 2 kids and says now she likes you..I would rather have a dedicated guy that can sing, than to have a selfish guy drop us like we are hot.Did you see the VH1 special way back when..He says,I never really felt like part of the group..Neal on Jon were floored..Neal was like,I gave him the reins and let him do whatever he wants with it..He was freakin selfish..He's been non existent for 11 years..I would rather have them go on without him..They still make great music..yes the singing will never be the same.I loved all the albums with Augeri also, for different reasons..Do you think Van Halen is going to be the same with a 55 yr old Dave? Please..they will last about 2 months..Like dave can sing Sammy's songs..He probably won't..I liked the band with both those guys, its called having an open mind!
