Night Ranger gave the Ian Gillan-fronted Black Sabbath a run for their money on the Midnight Madness/Born Again Tour...

Same goes for Ratt on their debut tour, they opened for Billy Squier. Ratt never sounded the same after that tour.

Journey blew Def Leppard off stage last year (for me anyway) in Houston. JSS was in TOP form (as always), as were the rest of the band. Joe sounded like shit after 3 straight nights in Texas.

Not on a large scale as far as bands go, but last December my buddy Ricky's band Scott Leftwich and the Atarians opened for Slushie down at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem and completely killed it. Most everyone left after their set and Slushie played to half the crowd. That was a great show.

I saw that show in Hollywood Florida, it was like 1984 I think??? You are right, Ratt was sensational. I left the show and immediately bought Out of the cellar!!! BUT-Billy put on a good show too, that was the 2nd time I'd seen him. In 82 or 83,cant remember, he was there with Saga. I always liked Squier live. In 86 Giuffria damn near upset headliners Foreigner on the Agent Provacateur tour. It was a close one. Great show all the way around!!!

Completely agree. I was there front row center. The girl that I took was a big Leppard fan and as we were walking back to my car, she told me Journey was WAY better.

Not to say Leppard put on a bad set...but JSS made Journey kick the shit outta Leppard.

Where in Houston/Texas are ya, Bro?

I can seriously believe that

Seen Whitesnake a number of times over the years. in 1997 for the Last Horrah Tour i was gutted when i saw D.C being a bit of a parody of himself and clearly wasn't into it. Plus even being a real fan, i thought his voice was shot but then have seen them a few times since 2003 and Its one hell of a show.

Pretty heavy compared to the old blues based days of the late 70's n early 80's but D.C has really rejuvinated himself and the band have really seemed to be seriously enjoying themselves...

Whitesnake at Hammersmith 04 (if i remember right) is still my best gig in the past 15 years.

that is very hard to believe!

Not at all...the current incarnation of Whitesnake is arguably the best incarnation of this band ever. Doug Aldrich does a better John Sykes than Sykes. Reb Beach handles the Vai stuff without the gay over the top crap Vai did back in the day.....

The only kink in Whitesnake's current lineup armor was the fact that they no longer have Marco Mendoza, who was fucking amazing...but if we're talking about 2003, I believe Marco was still in the band then.

As for me, the one opening band that completely wiped the snot out of the headliner was (and some people will undoubtedly square off with me on this)...

Silvertide (opener) blew the fucking DOORS off of Journey back in 02 or 03. They were so fucking good that it was almost painful to hear Journey afterwards....and trust me, I was still a big time jrny fan back then....that concert was the first sign that to me, that Journey had declined....they couldn't hold a fucking candle to a band of snot nose kids from Penn. Silvertide truly kicked Journey's asses...

and when Journey came out, they looked beat up. It's like Neal, that fucking cocksmoking piece of shit, actually recognized the fact that a guitarist 45 minutes earlier upstaged the living shit out of him.

Saw Ratt open for Billy Squier back around 85 or so and they massively blew lil' billy off the stage. After Ratt's set was done, about 30-40% of the crowd got up and started leaving

I can't fight OR agree with you on this one, dude. WHERE was this?? I saw them in Austin in '02 with no opener and in '03 on the Main Event tour but no Silvertide. If I had a faster speed connection then I'd get you to get a vid of Silvertide just so I can get an idea of what you're talking about...but...oh well.

Totally!!! I saw that tour too, and Bon Jovi kicked their ass! Of course, that was when Richie sang three or four songs by himself :)

And, definitely the Journey/Def Leppard tour last year!!

Take care,

Liam, Silvertide, afaik, only toured with Journey on the east coast...they also covered some dates for VH on the sammy tour in 04.

Silvertide, is, however, an unfair comparison. They're like the Black Crowes, with balls. So they were very much Les Pauls into Marshalls....no effects....straight forward smack your face and fuck your sister type of rock.

When Journey came out with their 'polished' sound, it was a letdown...the raw energy that silvertide came across with 45 minutes later was too much for people to handle. I remember turning to the guy I was with at that show and him going "wtf is wrong with this crowd, don't they realize Journey just got their asses kicked?"

Funny side story....that night, while there was a break in the crowd cheering in between a song....my friend (we were in the front row) cups his hands to his mouth, wells up and yells up to the stage "PLAY OH SHERRIE!!!"

The look on douchebag's face was priceless!

3/4 of these bands I don't even recognize. Did MTV VH-1 ever give them any time? Did they at least sell out arenas on various tours?

VAN HALEN opened for BLACK SABBATH / BLUE OYSTER CULT (1977) in Louisville, KY @ The Louisville Gardens. VAN HALEN kicked ass that night. I had met VAN HALEN earlier that day at KARMA records, i loved the album, but was blown away by their live show that night!!!

Scorpions blew away Motley Crue at Merriweather Post Pavillion once.

Scorpions and Dio were better than Deep Purple at the same venue, although Purple were good enough. Would have been better with Ritchie.

Damn Yankees laid waste to both Bad Company and Poison.

David Lee Roth over Bad Company (even with Paul Rodgers that time)

Styx over Journey

Kiss over Aerosmith (memo - do not come out and play blues after shit gets blown up on stage - letdown)

I wholeheartedly concur. I've seen DY open for both of these bands...and each time, the following band....whether it be Bad Company or Poison, should have never set foot out on stage...it was embarassing.

Funny story...back in 1990....my friend Chris and I go to see DY/Bad Company. Chris is walking out of the house and his father goes "What are you going to do tonight?" Chris responds, "I'm going to see Damn Yankees with Bad Company"

The father goes "wait, you're going to see a stupid play with a bunch of hoodlums?"

Chris goes "No dad, they're bands!!"

hehe. we are a tuff crowd. but you are right. Journey was blazing and def just survived til it was over. I was with a Lep girl and she even said so.

I didn't mention Journey>Def Leppard cuz it is common knowledge that Journey was the band to see. all 6 times for me in 2006. that new guy really kicked it, eh?

Frampton was complete toast on stage, and was being booed (hey.. Philly... gotta love Philly fans). Skynard, on the other hand, was on FIRE.

Oh my - I saw them at a Day on the Green in Oakland, the summer before the crash. I was actually sitting backstage on bleachers, Skynyrd was absolutely fantastic and Peter was in his pink silk days. He wasn't toast, he sounded great, but man Skynyrd was rocking! Santana played that day, too.

Journey with Jeff TOTALLY blew Def Leppard out of the water. No question. DL was good, Journey was jaw-dropping great. Had not seen that much energy from Journey EVER.

Dang right! I saw that show in my town, and it was the first concert I went to specifically to see the opening band. I stayed for and enjoyed Bryan Adams, but much preferred The Storm.

Also, kudos on the Journey/Def Lep -- I went for Journey, and enjoyed Lep, but Joe Elliot's vocals were being assisted quite a bit with effects. If you walked outside the hall, you could tell he was singing with no power at all. But they put on a good show, though.

Interesting...when I saw Bryan Adams and the storm, I felt they were equally great for different reasons....

Badams was awesome that night....but he's a different style of music than the storm...and when the storm came out and kicked ass, it was a different section of the ass than badams kicked....

Saw Loverboy out perform Def Leppard in 1988 in my opinion.

Doobie Brothers did the same to Foreigner in 1994/1995?

true, the show was fun. lots of sing along, feel good stuff, crowd interaction. Lep was just on a different level than Journey. for me anyway.

I am prolly being a little harsh on the Leps--I just went to see Journey, that's all. I might have enjoyed it differently if I hadn't felt like I got less of Journey than I wanted and DL was wasting my Journey/Jeff time. we got sooooooooo spoiled with that 3 hour show year.

I felt exactly the same way -- though I still listen to many of the same bands I did way back in the day, there are others that I've sort of outgrown. I guess Def Leppard seemed to "bubble-gummy" for me now, and I liked their show, but wasn't really that into it, even though I used to be a huge Lep fan.

Dittos on the Journey time -- they played a much shorter set to make way for Lep, and I gladly would have given up Lep for more Journey. They didn't even play "Who's Cryin Now"! I'm guessing they played for an hour and a half? But with a catalog like Journey's, that's just wayyyyyyy too short.
