To reduce his bandmates to background singers and cover artists is deplorable. All to feed a selfish ego and "show" everyone who was the Captain of a sinking vessel. Would have much rather heard an original. God, they have SO many great ones.

Truth, my ass. If somebody can do a cover song justice, I don't care who does it originally. A great song's a great song. And what?.......his bandmates didn't sing background on any originals? :P Ya, that's why he sang Stand By Me....trying to show everyone who was Captain.

This a shit-infested post. If fans wanted to hear cover songs they could go to karaoke. Journey was a MACHINE of hits...something fans PAID to hear. This half-assed version of a great song was bunk, out of place and reeked of a power struggle. Fuck, what should've been next....a Hendrix solo to fulfill Schon's ego? You don't get it...you just don't. This was a tell-tale sign of a man out of control, who fired integral members and made bad decision after bad decision. THAT is NOT debatable.

PS Would you have HONESTLY been excited to hear that rather than an original? Your post was pure Loon-infested garbage.

I think that performance was from Long Beach on New Years Eve in '86. The first time I heard that boot, I was really enjoying it until that song came on. I'm with Dan on this one. I don't want to pay $60.00 to go to a Journey concert to hear Ben E. King songs. I would've been pissed. Some people dig that. To know that their band can cover other people's work, but I don't. I hate cover albums as well. I wouldn't buy a cover album if Perry came back to Journey and did one. Yes I would, but just that one.

It was on one of the dvd boots from the FTLOSM tour. He added a tiny bit of Sexual Healing after his Cupid bit. Definately would love to hear him sing that whole song. I think it is on the Toronto show. Are you going to make me go back and watch these again to see which one?......LOL, please, please do.  PM me your addy and when I find it I'll send it to you if you don't have it. :)

Yep, you're right, I guess I just don't get it like you do. Plain and simple, I've always liked that song and they did a great version of it, sorry...didn't delve into the reasons why he picked it or why that one.......don't care. And no I'm not just saying that because of loonage, didn't like the "Jailhouse Rock" they did on that tour at all.

Good to see that you've tippy-toed out of the closet. You're starting to make SOME sense. However, I'd love to hear you address the decision to fire Valory and Smith, play half-assed cover songs (which you semi-covered) and quit a MAJOR tour...only to resurface 10 years later and....quit again BEFORE the tour. But I'm sure that hug and hand shake you got made you forget about all of that, huh? For the record, you're getting pasted in this debate. :P

Sorry Teach, I was in a hurry. :P Still wouldn't trade those hugs, but to be perfectly honest....I wouldn't want a reunion tour because I truly don't think they could all be in the same room together for too long. And yes I would LOVE to see one last performance from them all together. But I truly don't believe it will happen. Who knows, maybe when Journey is said and done, Neal and Steve can do something together. Because I really believe they have a huge respect for each others talent aside from the whole Journey machine.

I loved Stand By Me but hated Jailhouse rock.

Controversy?

Postby StoneCold » Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:56 am

Hey Saint John. All this time I thought you were pro Perry.

Anyway, I don't know that he had such malicious intent in covering the song. It's a classic that's been covered many times.

The film of the same title spurred a re-release of the song in '86 which reached the Top 10 charts again. I'm guessing it was a popular song to play at the time.

Here's U2 with Springsteen on it:

For anyone that hasn't seen or heard of this great movie, here's a clip that uses the original song. 1986

I'm VERY pro-Perry...just not to the extent (anymore) where I lose sight of common sense and simple deductive logic. 8)

PS Springsteen and U2, along with The Beatles and Zeppelin, are the most overrated musicians ever. I'd have to put that dirty jean wearing dirtball Bruce in front of the other noise pollution, though.

Otis Redding

Postby StoneCold » Sun Oct 21, 2007 11:03 am

Wow, the great Otis Redding covered it too?

Perry was a fan of Otis so this had to be one of his favorite songs.
