Could John Schlitt or Geddy Lee sing Perry high notes?

John Schlitt (former Head East and Petra) and Lee, well you all know him.

Do you think they ever hit notes as high as Perry? I mention 'cause they seem to only sing in a higher range.

Schlitt is comparable. Similar range and tone to Perry. Actually, if Journey had decided to move on in '87 when Perry quite, Schlitt would've been a good choice.

If I were putting a band together I would absolutely start with John and build around him. He's a very rare talent and can still hit most of the notes even in his late-50's.

Geddy Lee IS Rush. He's got good range but, he's more of a 'chirper' than a crooner. About the only comparison that I can think of between Lee and Perry is the schnoz.

Of course John is around the same age as Steve Perry. Talent wise, I think he'd be great for Journey. However, he has always seemed to make music more for his ministry. I highly doubt Schon and Cain would accept Christian lyrics.

I'm sure John would never be interested in a secular band again, but it is interesting how many people hear "Christian" themes in some of Journey's recent music.

Perry was the man, but he started struggling during Departure. I don't know how anyone could sing those atmospheric notes day after day and be able to continue. I don't think anyone can sing that catalog for very long.

I'm not sure if any of these sound like Journey tunes. There is definitely an '80's, glam-metal feel to all of these songs. However, if you've never heard Petra, download a couple of these and take a listen. From this album, I would recommend "All Fired Up", "Hit You Where You Live", or "Counsel of The Holy". This is John's first record with Petra and his vocals will BLOW you away. It's a shame. If Petra were a secular band, they could have easily been the band of the '80's. Bigger than any of those other earring clad, spandex wearing, heavy make-up, Aqua Net big hair & mullet bands. Kudos to them for not selling out.

Keep in mind that I wasn't much of a Journey fan until the mid to late 90s. All I knew back then were songs like DSB, Open Arms, etc.

Petra was great. From '87 through the mid 90s, they were on top of their game.

Yes, that was his first with Petra. Stylistically, "Back to the Street" was more like the previous albums with Greg X. Volz, who was a pretty good singer in his own right. They started going in the hard rock direction with "This Means War!" in 1987.

Yes, that was his first with Petra. Stylistically, "Back to the Street" was more like the previous albums with Greg X. Volz, who was a pretty good singer in his own right. They started going in the hard rock direction with "This Means War!" in 1987.

Absolutely right -- "Back to the Street" was very much in the style of the later Volz albums. Greg returns on their Firewall live disc, if you haven't heard it yet -- "Graverobber" and "Not Of This World" are two of my favorite Volz songs, and a couple of the most beautiful acoustic guitar songs I've ever heard.

I was an 80's child, and really got into Journey when Frontiers hit. Of course I am familiar with all the older hits, but never really listened to the earlier albums that much. I do notice that on the later albums (especially TBF), Steve's voice is just surrounded by effects -- I've referred to it as "encapsulated by effects" -- check out songs like "Message of Love", and songs where the vocal effects even lead into and follow his vocals. Gives it an other-worldly quality that is hard to duplicate if you sing them live without them. This may strictly be for the sake of the sound, and of course it comes off great, but maybe it was getting harder for him to sing the songs straight up? I dunno... Effects are also used of course to cover stuff up. They seem to have cut way back on them during Augeri's albums.

Absolutely right -- "Back to the Street" was very much in the style of the later Volz albums. Greg returns on their Firewall live disc, if you haven't heard it yet -- "Graverobber" and "Not Of This World" are two of my favorite Volz songs, and a couple of the most beautiful acoustic guitar songs I've ever heard.

"Road to Zion" and "More Power to Ya" are also two pretty good acoustic tracks. "Mary's Song" from "Washes Whiter Than" is another one that comes to mind.

That's one really annoying thing about their previous record company, Star Song. After Petra moved to another label, Star Song released like 6 or 7 "best of" compilations: Petra Means Rock, War and Remembrance, Petraphonics, and a few others.

I really didn't care for any of those compliations. I didn't really care for "Double Take" either. I guess Petra was trying to release a sort of "acoustic" album of their top hits, but I just didn't like it. Luckily I have most of their stuff, so I can just make my own "boxset".

Amazing how well Lee's done with a semi limited voice.

No denying he's a good singer just in a shorter range.
