Clear Channel refusing to play new music from old artists?

Postby AR » Thu Nov 01, 2007 1:33 am

Thought this might be worthy of discussion:

Clear Channel More Interested In Playing Old Music Than Music By Old People

Fox 411 columnist and Jann Wenner enemy Roger Friedman is alleging that the radio monopolists at Clear Channel have flat-out told the programmers at their rock stations that they can't play tracks from Bruce Springsteen's Magic, despite the album being No. 1 on the charts last week. Songs from the Boss' vault, like "Born To Run" and "Born In The USA," are OK, and that's causing Friedman to cry ageism:

Clear Channel seems to have sent a clear message to other radio outlets that at age 58, Springsteen simply is too old to be played on rock stations. This completely absurd notion is one of many ways Clear Channel has done more to destroy the music business than downloading over the last 10 years. It's certainly what's helped create satellite radio, where Springsteen is a staple and even has his own channel on Sirius.

It's not just Springsteen. There is no sign at major radio stations of new albums by John Fogerty or Annie Lennox, either. The same stations that should be playing Santana's new singles with Chad Kroeger or Tina Turner are avoiding them, too.

Like Springsteen, these "older" artists have been relegated to something called Triple A format stations -- i.e. either college radio or small artsy stations such as WFUV in the Bronx, N.Y., which are immune from the Clear Channel virus of pre-programming and where the number of plays per song is a fraction of what it is on commercial radio.

I'm surprised they're doing this to Springsteen... I always put him in the category of classic rock artists that transcended the age jokes and such.

This isn't anything new sadly.

This is also why I continue to say that Journey has no shot of a legitimate hit record, even with Steve Perry.

This has been going on for 10 years at least. I'm not sure why it's suddenly news now, but no real music fan I've ever met has listened to terrestrial radio in well over a decade anyway.

It's just sad...Elton, Bruce, the Stones, etc, have all made incredible albums in the last few years that no one has bothered to listen to.

Crazy...that's why(well, one of MANY reasons)Clear Channel sucks. We play "past and present" sets all the time. Springsteen, Scorpions, McCartney, John Fogerty, Boston, Rush etc.

Q95 here in Indianapolis used to do that. I haven't listened to them much lately, though, so I'm not sure if they still do it. They do carry Alice Cooper's show, though.

I haven't listened to radio in three years. The lack of depth, freshness, and originality to radio programming was getting tiresome.

Still a damn shame.

There is no point. I don't listen to it either and here's the reason. None of them play "music" anymore, in my humble opinion. And the classic stations play the old stuff. I can listen to the old stuff when I want, what I want on CD's or ipod, so why would i listen to the mainstream radio. I can't stand the new stuff.

No, haven't had the chance yet. I love "More Wonderful" though, that cd is strong. I just picked up his latest release but haven't had time to listen to it much.

Christian radio stations play new music every day. SCC, Crowns, etc... I get to sample new music there instead of being stuck in the 80's. :D

Who asked you? Don't you have a thread to trash the troops and talk about the positives of the terrorists somewhere?

Its an open forum is it not? You mean you aren't going to justify your statement?

You do yourself no favours with your accusations (like I give a fuck) - but please, be my guest - produce one single line where I openly 'trash troops' or promote the 'positives of terrorists'. It might suit you to think that.

You've already exposed yourself in another thread. Everyone knows you, including a veteran who took offense to you.

Yeah, what he said. You can't just disappear for two weeks and then come waltzing back in here and lay out some lame statement about your radio being on the up. We want explanations dammit!
