IMO the next best thing to Perry

Postby Funkiphino » Sat Nov 10, 2007 7:05 am

So I have never posted on any of these Journey forums before. I have been reading all the posts and thought I would share this with all of you guys. A few years ago I was putting together a Journey tribute. I found a singer in Colorado who hands down, IMO, sounds more like Perry than anyone else. SA, JSS, JH, the guy in the Philippines, all sound great, but none of them come close to this guy. The only problem is he turned out to be a real nut case. Actually telling me when we were doing this thing that he thought we shouldn’t book any shows for less than $15-30K "because Journey gets at least that much and so should we." And "Journey really wants me to be their singer but they have a contract with SA." Needless to say because of statements like this and countless other issues including the fact he couldn't remember any of the lyrics to the songs, the group never happened.
Anyway, he could sing his ass off and while we were doing this thing I had him over to my studio for some tracking sessions. We recorded several acappella snippets of Journey tunes. I thought it would be fun to share some with you guys and get your reaction.
Make sure to listen to all of Girl Can't Help It; there is blank space before the end that I didn't edit out.
Enjoy!

Uh have to disagree. Jason Kelty is still the closest thing to Perry. These clips sound like they belong on a backing track of a Meatloaf record though.

Um.......let me chime in here..........

No. Not close. Hell no. I thought it was "Wonder" WCN, not "Under" WTF?

He should go back to the bottling plant in Golden, CO.

I was thinking last night who could be a great replacement for singer. I now know who it should be. However, if I named this guy, you would all laugh me down, but I really think it would be a great choice.

Come on, man, just spill. If we can have links to shit like what's posted here, you can certainly throw your .02 in.
We've already had the ideas floated of Mickey Thomas fronting Journey and Perry singing Augeri music... I doubt your idea could be much worse than the latter of these two.

I wasn't serious about Perry singing Augeri music. After the Mickey Thomas suggestion, I was thinking though... what about Barry Gibb?

Okay, major Bee Gees fan here. Barry doesn't sing tenor, he sings falsetto. There is no way he could take on the Journey songs. Robin Gibb could do it in a heartbeat, but he would not sound like Steve at all. Robin actually sings high without falsetto. Barry is too breathy with his voice. Robin is the stronger singer.

Having said that - I can't see it at all, and I'm a walking Bee Gees textbook. :)
