It would only be about two extra hours I think (if I went the way I did to SB), I'll think on it tonight. :D
But I wasn't going the way I went to SB... I had a trucker friend of mine give me some good-ass directions around Cincy & Indy that'd be fucking Schweet to take... from my house in 9 hours. 8)

Amateur??????? No. lol. It's gonna be a Jack N Coke night for me...I REALLY think I'm a better bartender while I'm drunk. I'll come up with some outlandish,GOOD stuff. I was hammered when I made up my "Frog In A Blender" drink. ;-)
Should be fun tonight except for the Tejano band. There monitors are normally pointed right at me..and the acoustics in the bar are miserable. At least the people seem to have fun :-)

You still think I'm an amateur, Gerene????

Laws of Travel -- Part I (I'm sure.)

I set out this afternoon on my big grand adventure road trip world tour. I spent the first 2 hours stuck in traffic at the tunnels going into West (bydamn) Virginia and the next 90 minutes on the phone with Gerene trying to decide whether or not it would be a good idea to drive to Canada tonight. I've learned SEVERAL valuable lessons in the past six hours...

1.) If you take directions from a trucker (whom you know and trust quite well) understand that the reason he thinks his route is so grand is because there aren't any scales... hotels... gas stations... or cell service. I spent 2 hours on the Kentucky Double-A Highway tonight and in that entire time I had zilch reception.

2.) Although it sounds more appealing to a non-committal person as myself to drive until you feel like stopping, it doesn't always mean that when you feel like stopping there will be a hotel with vacancies. I was outside Cincinatti when I started searching for a room, now here I am 30 minutes from Indianapolis at a stank-ass Comfort Inn.

3.) If the desk clerk at the hotel speaks as much English as you do Pakistani, ask him what the cheapest room is, when he tells you its $75, calmly shake your head giving a puppy dog eyes, and in your best southern drawl say "I just can't afford that. I'm sorry, I guess I'll have to keep driving..." and he will tell you the room is yours for $50.

4.) Any exit with a Starbucks is probably a safe place to be.

5.) Bigg's is NOT a strip club. Its actually like a Wal-Mart.

6.) There are no Wal-Marts in east-central Indiana.

7.) When stopping for gas, check your surroundings, if you see a large quantity of beat up pick up trucks with Nascar stickers and a tabby cat sitting at the propane tanks, you're in a good place. (For me, anyway.)

8.) I smoke too much when I'm driving.

9.) Turns out, "Hey There Delilah" gets very old after the second or third time.

10.) I hate yankee pop, I miss sweet tea, and it is entirely possible to drive through monsoon-esque downpours and violent-ass lighting in the middle of November.

On to Chicago tomorrow! I'll be checking in tomorrow night (hopefully) from a cozy couch in Logan Square. 8)

Especially this one...

That brought back dear memories from SoCal...LOL!I had daily Pakistani-English convos with the desk clerks, some of which were more painful than waking up after 10 NY MF-ers.

Clerk :"'Hi-lo"
Me: "Hi,do I have any messages?"
Clerk:"Phone ring"
Me:"Excuse me?"
Clerk:"Phone room someone ring you,no message"
Me:"Huh?You mean someone rang but left no message?"
Clerk(starting to talk with his hands too):"No.No.Go room.People in the line"
Me (shocked):"What?"
Clerk (turning purple):"Yes,someone in the room waiting"
Me (panicky):"Whatta ya mean someone's in my room???"
Clerk (patiently):"Go room.Take phone.Someone waiting."
Me:"Now?"
Clerk:"No now,before."
Me (puzzled): "Before what?"
Clerk (sweating):"Call waiting"
Me (hit by the light):"OH!Someone is waiting on the line!"
Clerk frantically nodding, smiling like he just took a piss after looking for a bathroom all day.

Oh,and another one with another desk clerk, same hotel. He rings to tell me the password for my Internet connection.

Clerk:"Hi,call you for computer.Need pas-hurd"
Me:"Sorry?"
Clerk:"Computer"
Me:"Computer?"
Clerk:"Pas-hurd,type in,speed hi."
Me (confused):"You need my password?I don't have a password."
Clerk:"No,no...I give pas-hurd,you connection."
Me (enlightened):"Oh!Ok."
Clerk:"ay,ayt,see,fay,ow..."
Me (interrupting):"Wait...Can you repeat,please?"
Clerk:"Sure.Ay,ayt,see,fay,ow,nay.."
Me:"Excuse me...Umm...Can I come downstairs and take the password? Can you write it down for me?"
Clerk:"Come,pas-hurd here."

Yay!

Brave, or just crazy? You know I'm expecting you to follow my lead, right? Oh yeah, I'm writing you tomorrow about all that.

As for your convos with the desk clerk... yeah, that was kind of like me stopping outside Cincy at the Hampton Inn talking to the damn yankee...

Me: Ya'll have any vacancies?
Clerk: Ah-boot whut type of rooooome do you require?
Me: A cheap one.
Clerk: I have a mahstur sue-eet available for one and a quarter.
Me: One and a quarter what?
Clerk: Dollars, one huhn-dread and tah-wenty fahive.
Me: Naw. I'll go on out a piece and check there.
Clerk: Please?
Me: Huh? Please what?
Clerk: Please?

Around here if someone doesn't understand you, they say "please" instead of "I'm sorry" or "what the fuck was that rambling you mindless bumpkin?"

I'm doing well Ms M, thanks for asking.

Day two of Hubby Bub being away and I am enjoying having my house
stay clean and not having to pick up all the little things he always leaves laying around.
How was your day lady?

It's ok. Went back to work - think I still have a fever. Oh well. Only 4 more school days and then we get 3 off for Thanksgiving. My voice might actually be back by then. ;)

Thanks... It's the little germ factories I'm with all day. I have some that are real coughers this year. I had a sub for a 1/2 Tuesday and before I left the room, she was chastizing them about covering their mouths while they cough.

Thanks muchly for posting for me, Gerene. Didn't know when I'd finally get to check in here. Back at the apartment right now watching the rest of Interview With the Vampire before getting some sleep. Tonight was amazing fun. Went to this pretty neat little bar called Belly's (it was downtown, right near the lake, can't remember where though) and came back, had some pizza, totally amazing trip so far. Downtown Chicago at night is BEAUTIFUL. I feel like I am in a movie. I've been saying that all night though. Tomorrow night might be REALLY crazy. Like, South Bend-esque, so I'm not responsible for drunk dials.

Mostly, I'm proud of myself for being able to navigate the city (with my passenger seat driver) and survive!!

I'll check in and post with more tomorrow, but right now I am worn OUT.
