Captured

Postby epresley » Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:58 am

I was in the mood to forget the recent Journey drama this morning, so decided to pop in Captured on the way to work. Phenominal live album with the band firing on all cylinders. I'm not sure there was another band at that time that could go toe to toe with the musicianship of Journey short of Rush. Lots of good tours beyond that, lots of good tunes too, some of my favorites, but Captured is still a benchmark for live albums. Would anyone happen to know any of the specifics of this album? Locations recorded? One show, multiple shows pieced together? How much overdubbing? Do boots exist of the show/s this came from? Thanks and have a good day!

Does anyone know if the raw recordings of these shows exist?

Majestic, Where Were You, Just the Same Way and Line of Fire were recorded in Montreal.
Lights and Stay Awhile were recorded in Tokyo.
The rest of the live stuff is from Detroit.

Background vocals are assisted with overdubs.

There is a soundboard and audience version of the Tokyo show, last show of tour and Rolie's last performance with the band. (Oct. 13, 1980 I believe).

Yah, you can tell the backgrounds are overdubbed. (Feeling That Way/Anytime, etc) I hate that by the way. It's always funny to hear Steve's voice in the background harmonies. But otherwise, awesome recording.

Isn't it though?! He overpowers everyone to the point of "wow... it's an all-Steve record!"
I do actually like the way it sounds, though. :D

I listen to that CD often. Used to listen to it a LOT. It's Journey at their best.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

It's that incarnation of Journey at its best. The Houston DVD, IMO, is Journey at its best. Actually, it's the best concert film I have ever seen.

I was at the concert in Dallas the day after the Houston concert. Was the best concert I ever attended. The Houston DVD brought it all back when I watched it the first time. Great memories.

The Houston Show (1981)... We already know how incredible this show is!

Frontiers Tour (1984) 2-DVD set: BOTH nights at JFK in their entirety!

ROR Tour (1986), The covetted Mountain Aire show...

Someone (was it Dean?) said that Captured was heavily modified in the studio. Anyone remember that?

I love the Houston show, but if I could assemble a lineup that would be a band for the next 10 years, I would choose:

Perry
Schon
Rolie
Valory
Smith

Jerkoff Shirley dropped that bomb.

Neal was less than thrilled and quashed that accusation.

Late 70's recording technology. I wouldn't be surprised that it needed some mods. No biggie, excellent record.
