I love Bad English and Hardline, and while I can't say that I like either of them less than HSAS, I'll always have a soft spot for 'em. Neal's never had a shitty side-act.

Check out the original singer, Gary Brooker blows Sammy away, and the Hammond B3 blows Neal away also. There is nothing like the original singer and the original instrument meant for the song.It was classic. Good try Sammy and Neal, you cant top the real deal, enjouyed both.

Thanks! I love this song. First though, I was kind of confused. Neil Schon was in Procul Harem? Man, he gets around. :P

My personal feeling has always been that Hagar was given short shrift as a singer. Anyone remember "Love Comes Walking In?" Love that song. He certainly gave VH an awesome second act. Something that Journey could have done, if they had carefully chosen their third and last singer or not gone and mucked it up so much that the "source" material wouldn't sing at their funeral much less lead them in a hog calling competition.

Good stuff...

What was the deal with this show? Was it released on video / dvd?? Is it the same performance the live album came from? Also, interesting that it was live..kind of ballsey to do a show full of songs no one's ever heard before, but just having Sammy and Schon was cool enough back in the day, not so sure they could do this today.

Did you know? Glen Burtnick was originally asked to be the bass player (by Neal), but they decided against it....It would have been called HSBS

Ah, finally, a topic I can sink my teeth into. Thanks, Nora.

HSAS is one of my favorite albums of all time. I remember when it came out, seeing interviews with Sammy and Neal, and the flat out awe Sammy had for Neal's talent -- when asked why he doesn't play guitar in that band, Sammy said it's because Neal is so amazing that when he plays it sounds like a "fucking orchestra." I was already a huge Journey fan by then, but when HSAS came out, it made me realize how great Schon is. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember reading that they rehearsed for a couple of weeks, played live for 2 or 3 weeks, then took the recordings in the studio and removed the crowd noise from most of the tracks. None of the parts were recorded in the studio, as far as I know. That makes the album even more amazing.

they wrote , they played around 8/10 shows in cali. and recorded the shows, then went into the studio and cleaned up or overbubed the tracks. the original broadcast mtv did had 3 (i think )unreleased tracks. that should have seen the light of day somewhere. in for the kill might have been the best song they did.

dude, parts of your life parell mine... but the way i read it was that in the end,, sammy wasnt thrilled with his vocals.. so they rerecorded 7 of them in the studio... then neal decided he would do the same with the guitar .. especially the leads.. none of those live leads on Missing You sound like the albums version... i had understood that the bass and drums are live on every track,,,regardless... its one of my off the wall favorite albums of all time.....that is some tough guitar on that album...

i attended the three shows in the bay area. three of my all-time favorite shows that resulted in one of my all-time favorite albums. i didn't think of it at the time, but it was very unusual for a band to play all new, never-before-heard material & have it go over so well. i had extremely high expectations, as i was such a big fan of both sammy & neal. they completely exceeded all my expectations. i LOVED every single song, the band chemistry was amazing & the audiences were coming unglued. i was destroyed after those shows!

whew, i'm getting dizzy just recalling those memories! gotta go lie down now.

That's a treasure right there. I used to stop whatever I had going to catch the Westwood One interviews. I remember being on a first date when they were going to interview Journey ('85 or '86). I actually told my date, sorry but I can't miss this.

We sat in my car in the parking lot of the restaurant and listened to the whole thing. :D

At the end of it, she said something like, " I guess you like Journey, huh?"

Wouldn't it be great to have those days back again. Great record. Never heard or saw the live performances with those extra tracks though. Would love a chance to hear those extra tunes.....to bad we never got an HSAS 2.

As for Whiter Shade of Pale, I love the original, but I really enjoy the HSAS version more. The guitar parts Neal came up with for that song, just plain genius.

Also, props for the end of Neal's solo for "He Will Understand", just blindingly fast and clean.

HSAS and Hardline

Postby StoneCold » Sat Nov 17, 2007 1:39 pm

For the uninitiated, here's Wikipedia's info on HSAS.

As someone posted somewere else, Schon has never had a bad sideproject.

I say HSAS was his best, followed by Hardline.

Those are both great albums. AP's great for all the collaborations. Nice to hear those guys together. For the most part I lean towards rock music. That's why H.S.A.S as a band is tops for me.

With PB, IonU etc. its a good change of pace though. Had SRV lived past '90, I think he and Schon might have done a little collaborating. Could have been interesting.

Raw SRV versus smooth Schon.
