You are right -- the guy's a one and only. I've heard tons of people that sound a lot like him, or can imitate him pretty well, but every time I pop in any Perry-era Journey CD, it's very obvious that no one can sound exactly like him, and it still wouldn't work if they tried. Best they move forward with something new.

Let's me think about this.....OK....I'm done. Perry = Journey. They may have all created that stuff TOGETHER, but without him to:
1. Sing their hits
2. Collaborate on new material
3. Keep their asses in line
4. Maintain control of the legacy and catalog

....they are done!

Neal, go ahead and hire 50 sound-a-likes if you want to, but Journey fans want Perry.
Got it yet, Einstein? You'll never replace that voice and his melodics in a million years. But go ahead and keep scouring the world for his clone. Maybe by the time you're 90 you'll find someone HALF as good!

I love how all the anger is directed at Neal, when Perry is the one who said "Fuck You" to the band and his fans.

No NIG, this is about what Schon has done to the "L" word of this band. If he was determined to move on without Perry, he should have hired someone who had the clout and the talent necessary to front that band. Instead, he resorted to soundalikes, lipping, and firing anyone who either didn't sound clone-ish enough for them or wouldn't go along with every stupid thing they wanted to do. So what if Schon is/was a good guitar player? He's taken Journey on a 10 year trip to nowhere, and it still continues.

Short of getting on his hands and knees and begging, I'd bet that Neal Schon has done and offered everything imaginable to get Perry back in the band. He simply won't sing or can't sing. If this is how his legendary career ends it will be sad. Shit, even Britney Spears is still giving it a go.

Perry said he hasn't spoken directly with any band member, other than at the WOF, since the infamous phone call by Princess, post TBF. Schon didn't even have Perry's current phone # when he was on the Mark and Brian Show, before the WOF. They had to call his attorney or accountant and try to con the secretary into giving it to them.

Ya know, I, like many, believed that band was okay without Perry. And for the first few years of Augeri, it seemed that way. But dismal record sales, constant greatest hits tours, and pi$$-poor management style only tossed them on the dung pile like most other aging rockers. They are burying their talent in the ever-fading 'where are they now?' file. It does seem that they are just clinging to a thread to make a buck. And while I totally agree with capitalism and the band's (ALL members) need to keep the catalogue alive, I must finally admit that they are but a parody of themselves. I can't say that they've lost all credibility, but I will say that their shows have become "one of those things you do if you have nothing else to do."

With the value of their legacy and their dire need to launch into superstardom once and for all...BRING BACK PERRY. Period. Get him back on stage with Journey just once...and see what happens. To Schon, Valory, & Cain, camp out on his door step until you are arrested. Lose the egos & recreate the magic.

(Good post, SG. I don't like all the F bombs and we could have done without the outsourcing & dog bones comments. But you are dead on target.)

Well of course all contact has to be done through lawyers. That's what I meant. Perry has been hiding behind his lawyer(s) for a long time now. Doesn't mean he hasn't been offered the moon and the stars. I guess he's still pouting over being fired. I thought the two years the guys waited for him was more than fair enough. And Perry's comment "You know there's no going back" was complete bullshit. He didn't give them a date for his return so I'm not sure how long he expected them to sit on their hands and continue to not do what they clearly love to do.

Contrary to some bad information floating around, I've been told that Journey has begged Steve to sing during a show, a song, an album, a tour or forever. He denies every single request. I don't get this guy. He has Uncle Joe Benson tell us that his voice is "as good as anytime in the mid 80's" yet he won't sing. Why sing for this dude and let that leak out. He and UJB are good friends as I understand it, so why the need to perpetuate the rumor that you CAN still sing when you clearly can't or won't?

If he was going to come back, he would have by now. Move on, bro. I could understand all of the comeback talk if Perry was doing solo stuff, but he obviously doesn't want to sing for anybody, including himself.

....but doesn't GUFF count?

No, it doesn't. Pretty sad that that is the most we have heard Perry's voice in a song since 1996, isn't it?

Precisely. That's what I don't get, NIG. Why perpetuate the belief that you can sing (UJB, David Pack, GUFF) when you can't or have no desire to? It's like the guy can't be honest to himself or his fans, or both. What I don't think he gets is this: fans miss Steve Perry. The Steve Perry that was a part of Journey. Like the Van Halen reunion, The Police reunion and the Genesis reunion, fans don't care about the singers sounding like they did in the 80's. They want to sit back and take a walk down memory lane one more time and rediscover the feelings that come rushing back to a time that has passed. These other bands "get it." Other than Van Halen, I really think these other bands did it for the fans, not the money. Notes can be hit or missed, songs can be tuned down a step or not, but the fans will slip back into the 80's for an hour or two and get to relive some great times, and that's more important than some missed notes and/or rearranged songs. The tours I mentioned are undeniable proof of that, because a few of the shows have been FAR from perfect, yet the reviews have been. 8)

What I don't think you get is that Steve Perry is entitled to do what he wants to with his life. If he doesn't like the music business, and can be perfectly happy living off his residuals for the rest of his days, more power to him! How many of us would just retire from our jobs so we could do whatever we wanted to, if only we had the means to? He does. And just because fans - myself wholeheartedly included - "miss" Steve Perry, we can't assume that he misses the music business - or us.

SJ, I thought they waited 13 months? I wish I could dig up the exact date, but don't have time to search right now. Regardless of how long they waited, it time-proven that it wasn't nearly long enough!

Possibly, the Schon lawyers have contacted the Perry lawyers with reunion requests. The only thing we DO know about Perry of virtual certainty is that making him feel like he was INSIGNIFICANT to them all those years and they could easily do without him, would be a knife in his heart and in his back. I'm betting that's how he sees it. You can imagine the verbal and legal shit that was thrown down by all parties when the breakup happened.

If Schon wanted to make amends with Perry, it would take more than lawyers throwing him reunion cash carrots. He does need to camp out on his lawn and get real. That's something Schon doesn't seem capable of doing, unfortunately. Maybe the main reason is because even though he might want the $$$ it would bring, he isn't big enough to say he made a mistake. OR....he just wants to use Journey as a a job to bring in whatever he can get out of it, and not have to deal with Perry trying to keep him "out of the ditch beside the road". Who knows.

No, it didn't. Not even close. Minus Arrival, both incarnations' main purpose was to replicate the Perry sound. Though concert attendance was fair, neither really came close to the sound. What's more ridiculous, is thinking either of the aforementioned artists, both good in their own right, had a voice good enough to ever make Journey music relevant again with the long lost (and biggest faction) fan base. Arrival was a pretty good album that had great musicianship with thin vocals. Generations was a pile of shit that was compressed, polished and presented as music. That album completely sucked and was Journey's darkest hour....Tapegate and Sotogate included.

It was 13 months not 2 years.. Mr. Perry does not WANT to sing with Journey....He is happy with his life as it is now and has no need to be in the spotlight... Maybe he has grown past the Rockstar THING and has other interests now that he is older...I'm sure music will always be in his heart and soul just not the performing end of it. Thats very sad for me but not for him...AND I do believe he can still sing....My favorite CD is Captured and play it all the time...what beautiful music they made together and no other band was better at a live performance than Journey..
However, I do believe that had they explored the idea of a new album with JSS, it would have been incredible...

Okay, so it's yet again another Perry topic... been a lot of those lately... but I'm not sure it's such a bad thing... okay it's repetitive as hell but I don't think anyone is really trying to stir anything up... well maybe Frank. In reading between the lines I see a general feeling of being so let down by a band we all once loved and respected, and wishing things could be sooooooo different because it's like watching a train wreck.

I liken this to the feeling of clutching your Powerball ticket, knowing full well the odds are in favor of lightening striking you before you'll ever win, yet still you have all these great ideas about what you would do with the money. It's fun to dream before you have to face reality, in this case the reality is a once loved band that is just plain hard to look at now.

Buffoonery.

Depends on what you're all about, really.

Squealy, croony balladry w/ weird noises like rain, jungle sounds, and superfluous strings that scream "LOOK! STRINGS!!!" :| or guitar-driven Journey rock w/ good solid vox that are part of the band.

Buffoonery.

Depends on what you're all about, really.

Squealy, croony balladry w/ weird noises like rain, jungle sounds, and superfluous strings that scream "LOOK! STRINGS!!!" :| or guitar-driven Journey rock w/ good solid vox that are part of the band.
