Letting him get somewhat comfortable fronting Journey, feeling out whatever stage presence he will hopefully develop. Better to do it in a venue like this before throwing him to the wolves of a real concert. I mean if he's going to goof up, better he does it out of the eye of joe public internet reporter. This way he can learn what not to do at a real concert.

Saint John wrote:Arnel has performed more gigs than Perry and Augeri combined. Was the stage and setting as big? No, of course not, but the guy is a seasoned veteran who has obviously blown Kevin Shirley away. Think for a second about the singers Shirley has worked with. This guys is obviously the real deal. And if you think Shirley "is just saying that" I'd counter with the fact that he's worked with MUCH bigger acts and had far less praise. Ultimately, time will be the only factor in deciding how good Arnel is. Personally, I'm stoked.

Arnel has been a professional singer in Asia since the age of 16. The two bands I'm familiar with are AMO and The Zoo Band. For 23 years this guy has done nothing but record, tour and play gigs. You won't find a harder worker or someone that loves what they do more than this guy....no one.

While I'm not making excuses for the guy there ARE a few things that need to be mentioned. First, he plays 5-6 gigs a week and they're 5-6 hours each. Second, you really need to isolate his voice as the band has nothing to do with him singing for Journey. Lastly, he's rarely in "full voice" because the schedule is so demanding, and I think that's why Journey was so impressed yet there are only some clips that give you an actual idea of good this dude really is.

Some Asians just have incredible discipline and abilities. Check out those 100lb. Vietnamese dudes that win hot dog eating contests -- maybe Arnel has an incredible ability to sing Journey's catalog for countless dates without wearing out his voice.

I heard 3-4 hour gigs, same frequency. Can you imagine playing 6hrs in a stretch?!
