84 reasons to tell if you're an obsessive Journey fan.......

Postby Phen » Thu Nov 22, 2007 8:31 am

I was rummaging through my old sketchbooks about 20 minutes ago, and I found this list that I wrote (shortly after the Journey gig I saw this year in March). It's terrible and embarrassing, but I thought you might have a laugh and add to the list. :P

1)You've purchased all of their albums twice (or more) due to them being digitally remastered.
2)You suddenly like Santana due to the Gregg and Neal years.
3)You get really angry when you see Neal spelt as "Neil".
4)You own a leopard skin (bright yellow!) sleeveless shirt and the "Rockabilly" tank top to honour Steve Perry's fashion sense.
5)You have in-depth discussions with others about whether Gregg or Jonathan is the more worthy keyboardist.
6)You've noticed that the Perry solo albums and the last 2 Journey albums with Perry followed a pattern. (Street Talk '84, ROR '86, For The Love Of... '94, TBF '96.)
7)You read Journey fanfiction even if it enrages you and you roll your eyes and say "What a piece-a crap!" at the end.
8)You then attempt to write your own Journey fanfiction.
9) The Babys and Bad English are your other favourite bands.
10)You know every movement that occurs on the Live in Houston 1981 DVD.
11)You've gone out of your way to buy Frumious Bandersnatch.
12)You know that "Beaky Peartree" was Steve Perry's school nickname.
13)You use "Friga" to refer to Jonathan - showing off your great knowledge of Journey's personal lives.
14)You spend hours on end trying to decide what Steve Perry's greatest hairdo was.
15)You know every band/artist that Aynsley Dunbar has ever played with.
16)You either love Steve Augeri to pieces, or you hate him so much that you would like to cut him into pieces.
17)It's Smitty, not Steve Smith.
18)You keep your Japanese pressing of "Dream After Dream" in a plastic case, treasuring its glorious packaging.
19)You love the jazz fusion era as much/almost as much as the AOR era.
20)You celebrate every member's (past and present) birthday.
21)There's a Journey shrine in your room.
22)There's a much bigger shrine for Steve Perry in your room.
23)You often wonder what would've happened if that car crash didn't happen and Alien Project carried on as normal and Journey would be Perryless.
24)You consider Neal's solo albums to be works of genius.
25)You refer to Perry as "The Voice" - since he is clearly too superior for us commoners to say his name.
26)You think that Ross is the funniest man alive.
27)You force your friends to act out the video to "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)".
28)You draw a scarab beetle on your hand when you're bored.
29)You're not sure whether you want to be Steve Perry or marry him.
30)You felt so sorry for Jeff when he got kicked out.
31)You then got all excited because of your childlike fantasy that Perry could return.
32)You have an admiration for Sam Cooke.
33)You say "whoa" out loud when you realise than Neal Schon is the only member of Journey who's been on every damn album.
34)You get pissed off when you go to a record shop and Journey South have mistakenly been placed under the Journey card.
35)You want to go to Portugal hoping that you'll find a good-looking guy who really looks like Steve Perry.
36)"Street Talk" is obviously the greatest solo album ever recorded.
37)You go into a trance-like state during the solo of "Who's Crying Now".
38)"Faithfully" and "Open Arms" leave you crying like a baby.
39)Your perfect way of listening to "Any Way You Want It" is either in a convertable or on a golf course (a la Caddyshack).
40)Kenny Loggins kicks ass because of "Don't Fight It".
41)You're fond of people with hooked noses or afros.
42)You even bought Journey's Greatest Hits on minidisc - despite the lack of minidisc player.
43)(Female fans...) You thought Sherrie was a bitch, since you wanted Steve all to yourself.
44)Mariah Carey deserves to be killed slowly and painfully because of her "Open Arms" cover.
45)You only ever sing Journey at karaoke night.
46)You love tuxedo jackets.
47)You're tempted to buy an album yet again if you see it at a cheaper price than last time.
48)You print your own Journey t-shirts.
49)You have a Steve Perry pillowcase.
50)You stay up all night bidding on vintage tour shirts on eBay.
51)Seeing the word "journey" in a sentence instantly excites you.
52)All other AOR bands are just copying Journey.
53)You've spent years tracking down a Neal Schon signature guitar.
54)During "Just The Same Way", you do the 'Rolie point' after Steve's vocal solo.
55)When someone asks you what music you listened to in your youth, your reply is: "I was raised on radio."
56)Meeting people with the same first name/surname of one of the members makes you automatically say "Groovy name!"
57)You scour the net for baby pics of them.
58)You have to have the albums on vinyl, CD and tape.
59)One or more of your jackets are plastered with Journey badges/patches.
60)On forums, you abbreviate album and song titles, since everyone's gonna know what you're talking about anyway.
61)You've downloaded various fonts from album covers.
62)You clean your albums before AND after playing.
63)You've bought a Zippo lighter to wave around at a Journey gig even if you don't smoke.
64)You air-keyboard as well as air-guitar.
65)You casually drop in Journey song lyrics into everyday conversations.
66)You most likely started those conversations.
67)You own a pair of flares.
68)At airports, it's always good to see "Depature" and "Arrival" written everywhere.
69)You've been tempted to grow a moustache.
70)You have a personalised number plater that reads something like "JRNY 01".
71)Pictures of you with the band/autographs have been framed and the glass on the frame is cleaned daily.
72)You've been thinking of installing a laser alarm system to protect your Journey goods.
73)You almost die of ecstasy when a Journey track is on the radio....
74)...even though it's likely you requested that song.
75)Your children are named after members of the band.
76)If you meet someone who's never heard of Journey, you stare at them in disbelief, say "WHAT?!?!?!?!?!" and immediately make copies of the albums for that person.
77)You call that person the next day telling them to buy the albums properly purely for the packaging and liner notes.
78)When bidding goodbye to someone, you give them a thumbs up and tell them: "Be good to yourself!"
79)When you meet someone who loves Journey as much as you, you have a detailed quiz prepared for them to see if they are truly as good a fan as you are.
80)If they pass this test with flying colours, you instantly depise them.
81)If someone asks you what Journey track you're listening to, you give an eleborated, detailed answer rather than just the song's title.
82)Sometimes you arrange your Journey albums/singles in order of preference, then change them around again 2 minutes later.
83)You think that there should be a film or musical all about Journey.
84)However, you will sneer at the cast, since nobody is good enough to play Journey.

Holy crap, that took forever! I'm amazed my hands still work.

Most of these I have done or have considered doing... obviously the moustache one doesn't apply to me. XD I can't believe how bored I was back then to write this whole thing!

I love this list. You have no idea, or maybe you do, how many of these apply to different people on this board, myself included.

Phen, you should write a book about Journey. You obviously know as much as anybody does about them. Hey, you already have 84 chapter titles!

P.S. - How did you become such an expert on Journey history without being a member of this forum? I thought this was the exclusive Journey knowledgebase. LOL!

85) You read this list with a pen and paper to keep a tally of how many apply to you...then you give up, realizing it's pretty much all of them. :P

86.) You are 1 block from home, a Journey song comes on the radio, and you keep right on going until it plays through.

(guilty!)

I'm ecstatic to report that only 13 of Phen's original list apply to me. Yes I counted.
Alright, 14 if you count the one I just added.

Me too.

Which is worse; to drive another block or two until the song is over or to park the car and just sit there until it's over?

*turns red* Er... I just did that today. Like 1/2 an hour ago. Wait it gets worse...
"Lights" came on a block from home. About 40 seconds into it, my song alert thing beeped.
DSB on a different channel... had to keep driving.

Oh yeah...

87) If you have Journey on your "artist alert" on the satellite radio gizmo so you don't miss any of the songs YOU ALREADY OWN.

On the satellite radio thingamajig, you can store favorite artists and/or songs.
It will alert you when said artist is about to be played on ANY channel.

"Artist Alert... Journey... channel 8" - if you hit enter fast enough, you can get there before it even starts playing. 8)

Well, I've never acted out a video and I don't think Ross is the funniest man alive. :o
I just figured most of those were supposed to be in fun, like an exaggerated version of a Journey fan.

I do admit to the license plate one though.

ross was HALLARIOUS in the 80's,,, always clowning around on stage.. while never taking center stage.. make faces at the fans, had that little Wylie Coyote on the ramp behind him... ross was cool.. grab his crotch at you , type of guy.. very dissapointing about him not on RADIO ,, all the fans were a little bewidered.. everyone loved Ross though..

... growing up with journey as they were still touring and making valid and useable music was a great experience.. 8) very fond memories..
