yep, sure did..in Florida. I used to see them all the time when I lived in Sarasota. I went kayaking almost daily in the inlet's, bay's, and the ocean. I recently moved north....I miss the ocean already so I enjoyed it on the cruise...love the water...but now I do get to see the forest's and mountain's, which I also enjoy. Too cold for paddling right now but there are plenty of rivers around to explore in the spring. I am enjoying a lot of hiking..just have to bundle up real good....my blood thinned out living in the south for so long.

How can you live in Florida and never cruise!!!! It's so cheap since we don't have the airfare. Especially if you just do a little 3 or 4 day out of Port Canaveral. Your daughter would enjoy it too!

What can I say.. we dont get out much!
This year and last is the most I've traveled in the past 10 years.

Very cool bird's indeed! I love to watch their antics...you always see them sitting on poles on dock's and such where they look rather comical..and they waddle when they walk. ..but they are very graceful in flight....with very large wing spans. I would take long walks on the beach and watch them swoop down quickly, in flight, to catch a fish....that is the best...amazing animals to watch. When you see them in person someday you will love them even more.

We do talk on webcam, the phone and write a lot but nothing can be as good as seeing those you love in person.

What A Cutie!

Yes, that is a wild dolphin. I was in a small boat and he followed us for quite some time. He kept turning to the side a little so he could look me in the eye. He even vocalized several times. I have swam with dolphin's, but they are trained to be with people. I have seen many in the wild, but this guy was the friendliest and most inquisitive wild one I have ever encountered. A very cool experience.

I sure will, but never say never....could happen. I sure didn't expect my son to move to Italy a year ago and that I would be going there to see him....so you never know what life still might have in store for you right around the next corner.

If you are not exactly awake in the morning, you might think it's the sun coming up over the horizon. It shines like a beacon -- it's a car stopper. What is that tree?

Longtime residents and those new to Florida are always amazed by the yellow-flowered tree now blooming in many landscapes. There are several local trees with yellow blossoms, but this one is special. It lights up the landscape each spring to usher in the new gardening season. What we are all enjoying is the yellow tabebuia.

Horticulture history credits the late Mulford Foster with introducing this landscape wonder into local landscapes. Many years ago Mulford's son Bert told me his dad climbed a flowering tabebuia tree along the railroad tracks in Brazil to harvest its seedpods and then sent them to him in Orlando. Bert then said, with a chuckle, that he had started the seedlings of a majority of the trees you now see along the streets and in the yards of local residents.

Mulford Foster is also known as the father of local bromeliads, having spent years as a world traveler and plant explorer, discovering many species. Some bear the Foster family name, those of friends and his home city of Orlando. But to me, one of his biggest finds and introductions is still the tabebuia.

There are many tabebuias. Several yellow ones grow in this area as does a pink one. Yellow selections are the most cold-sensitive, and some gardeners seem to be raising tabebuia bushes which are recovering frozen-back trees. Perhaps one of the really showy parts of flowering is when the blooms fall to carpet the ground and continue the colorful display that can last for seveal weeks.

Tabebuias can be found at some garden centers but they are not heavily marketed like ever popular shade trees. Some gardeners propagate their own and offer them to friends or sell them on the street corner. The seeds germinate readily when harvested and planted as the pods begin to burst open. A light covering of soil is all that is needed and the seeds are normally up in a week or two.

Florida could be a lot more colorful if we would all plant a tabebuia or two.

There just aren't enough of them around though, and they don't have those flowers very long and they lose them pretty quickly and make a mess in yards. Mostly in general when it comes to the majority of trees, we have green and brown here.
