I didn't... of course when I parked downtown it was after 8:00 and I parked on the streets... there were meters, but my friend said they were (something) meaning you didn't have to pay at that time of day. Still had to walk a block and a half to the bar we were going to though. I found it more frustrating to park in the residential areas of the city, that's a pain in the ass, even if it is free.

I can't think of one place-except the airport-where you have to pay to park anywhere in the city where I live.

Where I grew up you can rent a nice apartment or house for $350/mo. That's a lot for parking. At least you get a discount!!

Holy shit, you found a meter space downtown only a block and half from where you were going? Believe me, that's a good thing. Downtown Chicago, Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Bucktown - pretty much anywhere along the lake and where living/working quarters are crowded, are all metered areas, but most of them after a certain time you don't need to feed them. Usually not on weekends either, depends which area. And it's HARRRRRD to find those spaces no matter what damn time of day it is. Downtown you are pretty much forced to use a garage or a pay lot, and you're pretty much force to mortage your god damned house to do it, too. The hotels are the worst, like that sign cyndy posted... it damn near costs as much to park your car as it does to stay overnight in some of these places!

Lakeshore Thursday night, and Bucktown Friday night... took the train on Friday though, Bucktown was packed and we were buzzed, so probably a good thing. I had no problem both times I parked downtown (grand total of twice) but still, both times free, both times close to where I was going. ...Maybe I'm just that good.

Like I said, I was staying in Logan Square with my friend and his street was like playing a game of chicken to find a spot. I sat in front of the fire hydrant for 20 minutes waiting praying for someone to leave so I could steal their spot. Fortunately they did.

Logan Square? For parking? Bwaaaaaahaaaaaa! Yup. You're right - that's worse than downtown.
(by the way, the rest of the city doesn't look like Logan Square  )

So who wants a tour of MY city?
Okay, probably no one, but blame Andrew - he started this.

This is basically the entire downtown area... it's not as big as people think...
The majority of the city is all that flat space behind it...

Image

This is south of downtown... the thing on the left is Soldier Field.
Slightly up and right of it is the Field Museum. The big grass/tree area up and right again is Grant Park.
The big dark building in the top left is the Sears Tower.

Image

This is what most of the city looks like - very much in grid format...
This is a basic Chicago residential area...

Image

This is Navy Pier...

Image

This one, I thought, was kind of cool... this is a section of Navy Pier from above, where the ferris wheel and carousel are...

Hey I LOVE your city....amazing place.
I loved the whole area. I could move there quite easily for something different to do. What are the nicest suberbs in your opinion? Not the most expensive, but the nicest.

I saw a lot of Burr Ridge (when I stayed with Jimmy P....bloody expensive.magnificent!) and Naperville / Aurora while I was in town the week prior to the show. But what else are nice areas?

Bucktown has a fun bar/music scene. Schaumburg (burb) has a mall bigger than my hometown. Streamwood has 7th Heaven. Logan Square has horrible parking, but beautiful buildings with a lot of character.

BJG, I love your city too!! :D I'm homesick for it!!

I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

THAT is too cool. We had a semi-chance of having something similar here. But.... too many people yelled that this is NOT what we want "mucking" up our view of the bay. Boy, did we miss the boat on that one!

 No! Swam IN the lake but never across! The only part of Canada we frequented every year growing up was Niagara Falls. Have great memories of those trips.

Naperville is real nice, my sister used to live there. Most of the surrounding ones are good too.
Good schools out that way too - very nice, family-oriented areas. If *I* were choosing, I'd choose a northwest 'burb like Mount Prospect, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights... I'd want to be near I-90/Northwest Tollway, because it's easy to hop on that and come into the city.

I like Park Ridge because it looks more like the city than a 'burb (because it's right on the border of Chicago), but it's expensive as shit.
Also right on the edge of the city (and 5 min. from me) is Schiller Park, which is where the Frig lived. LOL! Not much that's hot about that 'burb though. I find it boring.

Wow... the Wombat moving to my town! (or near it) That would be just neato. I would hang with you. I'm fun. :D 8)

Agreed... love the NW Burbs. Mostly b/c of the easily accesible 7H shows. I-90 is tons of fun, especially around 6pm on a weeknight.

Schiller Park, which is where the Frig lived. LOL! Not much that's hot about that 'burb though. I find it boring.

Hence how it produced the Frig.

The only place to catch good music around here is on the back porch of the Luckenbach general store. I can't compete with all those big city pictures.

It didn't produce the Frig - he moved over that way later and went to HS in Franklin Park.
He's a city boy, originally.

I remember when Navy Pier was nothing but a pier! It was in the 60s & my parents took us down there (my mom used to go there in the 1940s for some reason - sailors, dancing?)...what I remember is something that creeps me out just thinking about it. It was night time & no lights really - I was running my hand along the chain link fence & when we got to a lit part I saw that the entire fence was covered with black spiders!! Ewwww!
