Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy Gets A Surprise Guest
LOCATION: Regatta Bar, Cambridge, MA
ARTIST: Steve Smith
It's always a treat to see Steve Smith, and you always know that whether he's playing with, "Vital Information", "Buddy's Buddies" or his newest endeavor, "Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy", his playing is going to knock your socks off.
Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy headlined this year's Modern Drummer Festival and once again Steve has taken drumming to new heights. Whenever Steve comes through Boston, the Zildjian crew is always there in force. Steve is truly "family" to all of us at Zildjian.
It just so happens that Charlie Watts and the Rolling Stones had been in Boston rehearsing for the next leg of their Bigger Bang Tour, which began Wednesday, September 20th at Gillette Stadium. In fact Charlie invited John DeChristopher, Zildjian's VP, Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide to attend a rehearsal the night before Steve's gig at the Regatta Bar. While there, Johnny D in turn invited Charlie to the Regatta Bar to see Steve the following evening. Being the huge jazz fan he is, Charlie readily accepted and he and Stones saxophonist Tim Ries joined the Zildjian crew (Debbie Zildjian, Emily Zildjian, John DeChristopher, Jim McGathey and Jason LaChapelle), along with Zildjian artist Dave Mattacks, and Joe MacSweeney of Eames Drums, for an incredible evening of music at the Regatta Bar.
Several times throughout the evening Charlie commented on Steve's incredible playing. Afterward, Charlie and Steve were kind enough to sign autographs for fans, then the whole gang went to Steve's dressing room for a great hang. Steve and Charlie exchanged stories about when The Rolling Stones and Journey toured together back in 1981. Charlie asked Steve: "Were you that good then?" To which Steve replied: "Probably not."
Commented John DeChristopher:, "The timing was perfect that Charlie had a night off when Steve happened to be playing in town. The last time we were able to do this was several years ago when we went to see Brian Blade. At the end of the day, we're all drummers, and drummer love to hang together."
