Thank God for that.
Maybe releases won't be staggered out half-decades apart now.

My mind still boggles that perry's pet producer would produce the Journey re-recording past songs album and it be a WalMart release, unless it's one of those exclusives The Eagles got.

You mean Kevin Shirley? What gave you that idea? Try Kalodner's 'Pet Producer' FTW.
KS is actually very good with those egos behind the board. He earns his money, fer sure.

I wish there were some way to get the word out to the masses that Perry isn't on this
album and its a scam.
This is pure greed and a con.

It's about the dumbest idea I've heard, and a great way to further isolate a fanbase by insulting the guy who brought the band to fame. I'll be interested to check it out, but I doubt it will be added to my collection unless there is something stellar about it -- and I don't foresee that happening.

Not really. There was no love lost between those two during TBF, and TBF, to my knowledge was SP's only project with Shirley.
Unlike Augeri who did Remember Me and Arrival and other stuff with KS.
Neal's pet producer, sure. Kevin is the only guy I know who can drink NS under the table.

All I have to add is "craptastic". I will stick with the originals sung by the original artist and forgo the K-Tel version.

Rerecording 30yr old music is pathetic no matter who is singing.

It's a STUPID idea...almost every decision this band has made for the past two years has been STUPID...so I'm not suprised.

I'm still a Journey supporter but re-recording the old stuff would be a mistake. They need to do NEW, ORIGINAL music. Maybe they're just being lazy because they lost the "magic" in the songwriting trio. Guess they're trying to make as much cash as they can still. They should write biographies instead. All of us want the dirt on what really happened with the band instead of all this speculation. I wish Herbie Herbert would write a book, he doesn't need the money but it would be an awesome read.

Yes another reason to hate the WalMart corporation. There was a big video news story about them and what they do not only to small retailers but small manufactures to save money, i.e. forcing them to outsource products for manufacting for X price as a means to save X money. The manufacturers are put in such a position that that can't argue because they need to make the money and if they tell WalMart no, they're not going to switch manufacturing and lay off all their workers in their smaller, local plant, then WalMart says too damn bad then, and walks away. It was a dateline-type special awhile back.

This is the same thing. "We'll push a record for you, but you have to record it over because we don't want to pay Sony. Take it or leave it." Granted, this doesn't take the accountability off Journey, because "no" is an answer as well. There's no just integrity or pride in their work left.

How much do you think WalMart is going to advertise the fact that it's not the original recordings or the original lineup though.
That info is going to be in some very tiny type, on the bottom, on the back, I suspect.

This is clearly an attempt by the remaining members of Journey to piss back at Steve Perry for him leaving them in the lurch in 1996, 1997 and 1998. I like the idea of them saying "FUCK YOU" back at him, but I don't like the way they're doing it. I expect a response from Perry as well. I guarantee this shit gets good this year. Legal wrangling, a few nasty comments and hopefully, a punch or two thrown. This promises to be an exciting year.

Possibly only because they are not the same original recordings and can't be allowed to market as such? That was my thinking. This would also depend on the title, I'm thinking. Too much unknown, still. My guess is that there will definitely be no pics on it. And I do agree with you about the consumers not paying attention to what they're buying though and that's of course what the bigwigs in marketing & design are counting on. Happens all the time.

It's got to be coming soon, no? The t-shirts showing up, I would think would be a fair indicator of that. "Hey check out the Journey shirt! Many bands are doing this (re-recording the classics). It's a financial thing for the most part so they don't have to pay former members/songwriters for using/selling the songs. I asked a member of a well-known band that I really like why they re-recorded their hits, and that was THE reason for doing so.

Wow, way to grab the post I deleted. Don't know why I deleted it actually, its a pretty good point.

Fact is, out of the general population who buy this record, depending on the vocality of the singer, and the amount of "tools" used or not used, probably 30-40% might not ever even give it a thought. Especially the younger dorks. Others might think it sounds "different" but chalk it up to being a re-release and not remembering things as they were.

I'm interested to see what it comes off as, personally.

My further guess is lots of tools will be used on that record.

Hmm. Now that I read that over - I do mean that in every sense it could be taken.

Perry will probably take the high road, stay in seclusion and make no comment. He's got enough money to not let their monkey business bother him.

For better or worse, this is a common practice today. I don't think it's a dig at any of the previous singers, just a way of making money on the back catalog without having to cut in Sony. If you watch the Styx Behind the Music they talk about how they re-recorded Lady for their Best of compilation so they didn't have to pay the previous label (Wooden Nickle) to use the original track.

I had heard that this was the reason that Mick Jones had his current band re-record some of the Foreigner classics. Apparently, that way he could allow them to be used in movies and ads without some of the old band-members getting a cut (or even having say so).

It seems not. He'll always get publishing payments obviously as a co-writer, but it seems his era of control is over.

This is sad...as SP is so protective of the songs & their place. But, I also believe that he "owns" those songs no matter what happens. Meaning there are lots of people who already own the Journey CDs with him & a lot of people who know HIS name & voice...why would they buy the re-recorded? I don't think they are gonna sell. I think the whole idea was & is stupid. There is more to life than money & more money.

They ALWAYS have to pay the songwriters (whoever they may be), but perhaps not the original record label that paid for the recording sessions etc, which usually hold draconian contracts over their artists.

I agree. This is a business move and from that point of view I understand their reasons.
Sure,as music fans we're not happy with this and it's no wonder. Why the hell re-record & release something that's already perfect?

It would be so much more interesting to hear something new,a brand new album.Maybe they'll do that too,but I guess Journey changed with the times - business comes first.Oh well.

I think I could understand re-recording the GH's if their intent were to offer the songs as free downloads to promote their new singer on their website, the same way Foreigner is promoting their replacement for Lou Graham. But to record their hits and offer them for sale without the original lineup who created the songs in the first place is just a bad idea.

Sure, they'll see money from their deal with Walmart, and who knows, maybe Walmart will even sell through copies of the disk to morons who don't read the fine print before buying. But Journey will have done a great deal of damage to their legitimacy as a band. Guarantee you they don't place band credits on the outside of the CD package. Only after the consumer buys the disk will they realize it's not Perry on vocals. Bait and switch is never a good business practice no matter how you justify it and this will come back to haunt them.

If you're going to spend 5 weeks in a studio, how can you not work on new material? Sad, pathetic as hell and I won't go to a show to support this kind of behavior.
