Actually, I just got it today! That and the first of my Journey CDs, "Departure". The CD was described by the seller on Amazon as "LIKE NEW", and it's anything but... case is very rough, booklet has wear, and the CD does have some scuffing (fairly light -- nothing major). I would grade it as G to VG. Still, I'm a little ticked that it was misrepresented, but no big deal... I'll had a new case and maybe get it buffed a tad. It will be as good as it can get.

"Secret Society"... Just popped it in today and it's definitely different than "Start From The Dark", right from the first song. I did like what I heard, but for different reasons than the previous disc -- I think this will be more of a grower. In typical fashion, I got stuck on track 3, "Getaway Plan", and like it so much I'm having trouble advancing. I will try to listen straight thru tomorrow.

Yeah, I think Start from the Dark was much better, with only about 2 songs I usually skip. Secret Society does have a few good ones though so give it a chance. Always the Pretenders, Let the Children Play, A Mother's Son, and Devil sings the Blues are all pretty good. Wish they would tour here again.

Got to listen to it all the way thru today... what a great disc! I was surprised by the strong spiritual theme in two of the songs, and the last new song, "Devil Plays The Blues" would make an excellent Christian rock song -- really lifted me up out of a blah day, and probably now my favorite song on the disc. I ran across a review on Amazon that pretty much echoed my thoughts throughout:

I will admit, I wasn't sure how I felt about this cd upon my first listen. I instantly liked Start From the Dark, which was a definite departure from older material. This album seems much more adventurous, different sonic textures, different moods. With every spin, I liked it more, each song was ditinct and memorable. I have grown to love it. The songs are memorable, each with a different flavor, but a different sort of hook. As much as I loved Start From the Dark, this album seems more varied than their previous album. My personal favorite was the last track, "The Devil Sings the Blues," which highlights John Norum's fretwork with its uptempo outro, very reminiscent of his solos on Don Dokken's solo album, Up From the Ashes. "Always the Pretender" is most likely the first single, and is most representative of Europe's new sound, with a catchy chorus and fast upbeat verse. Europe experiments with different vocal effects (I think Joey's using a megaphone!) as well as a youth choir (in "Let the Children Play," an excellent mid-tempo track), making for an interesting listening experience. I like the keyboard work by Mic Michaeli on "Secret Society", adding cool musical textures while being somewhat understated (as opposed to The Final Countdown), as well as the beautiful piano on "Mother's Son." This Europe, while being fun and adventurous, shows the wisdom of their years, and gives their more mature fanbase more food for thought and ear.

I wish they would tour here too! Secret Society is a bit of a grower to me too, I love Start From The Dark so much, lol. And like you got stuck on one track (Hero) before listening all the way through too, lol. 8)

They have a new myspace page now too I was just told  8) :

My understanding is that they want to tour the US with Secret Society, but are looking for the "right" package to tour here. When they were here with SFTD, they barely broke even financially because there wasn't any promotion for the CD or the tour. Thus, they showed up, played the typical clubs bands like their play these days when on their own, and either walked into a sold out situation or a half empty place. They've always been fans of Journey, I say they team up with someone else and hit the summer venues, would be a good show.

I got Secret Society off itunes a while back.. Devil sings the blues is spectacular..I really like always the pretenders also.. Joey is an awesome singer, kind of a kin to Steve Perry how he has control in his voice and the feeling.. That's what makes Europes songs so good..They have great guitar and feeling in the singing.. At least to me,that's what I hear..

I must admit that Europe's comeback album took me by surprise. I really didn't know how to take it. But, there were a few songs that grew on me with that album. I haven't listened to Secret Society yet. Would you guys rank that much higher than the last album?

I was just thinking about that today... Totally different tones in their voices, but Joey does sing with a few Perryisms, and I figured S.P. might have been an influence on how he sings.

Agreed -- To me it was what the Amazon reviewer said -- "Start From The Dark" grabbed me instantly with great hooks and solid songwriting -- it just rocked immediately. Like I said in an earlier post, I found myself going to their website often just before it was released to relisten to the clips of the first three songs, I liked them so much.

"Secret Society" is another evolution in their sound. Very solid stuff, but more of a grower. I quite often find that the "growers" are the ones that stick with ya the longest.

SFTD is a much darker side of the band's sound. A very raw album. With SS they seemed to push the envelope a bit. I think it rocks more then SFTD and maybe a little bit of a step back towards their old sound, with a heavier, more modern feel to it. Like "Hero" on SFTD, "Forever Traveling" is very old school Europe. They actually reference Journey...intentionally in that song when Joey sings..."The wheel in the sky keeps on turning." Obviously a direct reference to the Journey song. I play SS all the time, but I must admit that Europe is my favorite band, and I think a lot of people would like them more if they got past the bubble gum bull shit pop-metal like The Final Countdown that their record company made them play. If you know the band, you know that they are much more then those tunes.

Agreed! I didn't catch the "Wheel In The Sky" reference, but will listen for it! I'm just 2 days into the disc, so much more to discover.

I think you will really enjoy it. It is one of those discs that takes a couple listens to really get into, only because you think of TFC/OOTW era Europe and try to relate that to the new stuff. Once you get past that it is very enjoyable. "Human After All" is a great song, has a nice groove to it. "Devil Sings the Blues" is one of my favorites too, like "Forever Traveling" kind of the Europe sound you're accustomed to hearing, but with an updated sound.

I think the best show Europe ever put up was the New Years Eve milleniumn....Stockholm ,,, outdoors, in the coldest winter day of Sweden.
What was so special about this show was the fact that BOTH John Norum and Kee Marcello played that nite, making it the 1st and last time Europe performed with 2 (great) guitar players in their line up.
Although they only did 2 songs, (Rock the night and The final countdown of course), they really did rock the night in front of 700.000 people.

No, YOU rock, dude! I need to check out "Prisoner In Paradise", as I've never listened to it. Hey, I think you need an avatar with the Journey69 name, but only put Neal's head on the 6, and Jon's head on the 9. Or maybe they'd argue who should be the 6 and who should be the 9. :P

Ahh... That's not too hard -- you do it thru your profile settings, but best to have an image in a place on the web that won't change, like in a PhotoBucket account. If you link to something you found on another page, it could change and then your avatar disappears. I had to finally open a PB account recently for that very reason.

Of course I'm teasing about Neal and Jon -- I don't get that worked up over them, but do like to stir the pot occasionally! :P

I think I will get the older Europe's albums I don't yet have... thanks for the tip!
