I just nominated SP also ...... they need multiple nominations for him to be considered

I did specify that it was Steve Perry formerly of Journey.

The singer for Cherry Poppin' daddies is also Steve Perry.

Listen to the first lines of "Lovin Touchin Squeezin"
Now, listen to "Nothin' Can Ever Change this Love I Have For You" by Sam.

Tell me Perry didn't completely rip that off.

Many of the runs that Perry does are directly taken from Sam.
Sorry, but it's the truth and I'm a huge Perry fan but I'm also a Sam fan.
You'd have to be deaf not to hear it. I believe that even Sam's family has
made mention of that, but I can't find the article. They didn't look at it as a bad thing either.

I'm just saying that while Perry was a vocal God, he wasn't the original.
Of course, I'm in a Journey forum, so I'm already paddling against the current.

I question whether they were a direct steal.

Yes I know I know Perry always mentions sam as an influence - we have all been privy to the same interviews.

When I hear them, they seem to me to be very typical R&B stylizations ........ used by Sam, Jackie Wilson, Ben E King et al at the time.

Sam shared them with a lot of people.

Maybe so, but nobody did those runs before Sam. They were his trademark. Listen to the tracks.
Like I said, I'm saying this in a Journey forum, so I will get slammed, but all you have to do is listen.
Perry was amazing, no argument here. But best of all time? Not too sure.

I was about to cite that exact same example.
"You make me weee-EEE-eeep..." came right from that Cooke tune.

I don't know that I would say he specifically "stole" it though, or was necessarily aware he was even doing it.
But yes, it's absolutely the exact same vocalization. Listen to it, for a second you'd swear you're hearing LTS.
The musical influence can't be denied.

Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" was much further away from the Chiffon's "He's So Fine" than this example and he got sued for it.
The musical influence is definitely there. That's another thing, I think Sam has influenced more singers than Perry did (right or wrong) and I think the question of how the singer has influenced others has to come into play when deciding the best of the best.

I'd take McCartney and Daltry off that list. The rest are very talented.

McCartney can sing ANYTHING. Listen to Yesterday. Now listen to Oh! Darling. Now listen to Helter Skelter.
Bon Jovi is a crappy vocalist. One dimensional, horrible pronunciation... sucks compared to any of the others.

Robin Zander should be in there before Bon Jovi can even knock on the door.

We're gonna have to beat out the Queen fans, first though. Queen and May are leading by miles in the rock band and guitarist categories, respectively. And I see Neal standing... or more likely squatting... with a very small .76% (when last I looked - at least he's not dead last yet) and Journey was eliminated from the band one, so obviously Journey fans aren't flocking in droves to this one.

Though, what kind of poll is this anyway? It's kind of lame. I't's not affiliated with anything (that I can tell) and they keep spelling the artitsts names wrong.

I agree. Tyler is the only one on that list that would be in Perry's league ... and it's a distance reach from Tyler to Perry.

Saint John wrote:

right now , there are 5 nominated at votenumber1.com
Tyler
McCartney
Mercury
Daltry
Plant

Schon getting no love at all for best guitarist
I'm stumped on that one
Thought Lukather and he would be close. Lukather doing very well but Brian May in 1st?

Perry's miles better than 4 of those douche bag's and decidedly better than Mercury.

Halford is out of the closet, 7. Why do you think the dressed the way he did back then with all that shiney leather and shit? He is gay.

I also think Delp should be up there.
For me it would be between Paul, Perry and Brad.
