No where in the same league as FRONTIERS...and as far as "as good as ror..." well- I think it ranks as the #2 crappiest (SP era) Journey album ever- RIGHT BEHIND ROR

I place TBF at the bottom, just below ROR, which I still maintain is a great Hall & Oates record.

To be honest, I wasn't that big a fan of TBF at first, but it's absolutely grown on me. Overall there are more tracks I like than ones I don't... but beware, this is the album with the once-hidden (and probably should have stayed that way) bonus track "Baby I'm Leavin You." If you do pick this one up, at least make sure it's the reissue with "I Can See It In Your Eyes". The addidion of that makes up for the presence of BILY.

Enjoy! 8)

It's not even close to Frontiers and not as good as ROR, but it's still a Journey record with Perry. That should be enough. 8)

You're gonna get a variety of responses as music is too subjective for everyone to agree.
I definitely recommend TBF, but some here will say they hate it, while others will rank it as their all time favorite.

When You Love A Woman and Message Of Love are 2 incredible songs. Failure to realize this, and you just don't get it then. Those 2 songs alone are worth the price of the CD.

TBF's a lowpoint, but as a fan you should be getting the remaster anyway.

good booklet, upgraded sound and ICSIIYE added.

The brightest spot on the album - it's the only song I've ever wanted Perry to stop singing so I can hear the keyboards at the end. A masterpiece - my favorite Jon Cain keyboard performance. I'd love to hear that as an instrumental.

No "When You Love A Woman" or "World Gone Wild"?
:)

I'm among the crowd that like TBF. I bought it for WYLAW and MOL and was not disappointed. Granted it is a mellower album but still great to listen to.
Now is it as good as Frontiers? No.
ROR? I would say it's better, but that's more of a personal preference thing.

It really depends on the reason why you like Journey. I believe TBF contains some of their deepest, soulful, meaningful lyrics that they have ever collectively written. I'm not sure where I rank it, but it depends on what mood I am in. Somedays it is #1, and somedays its near the bottom. I absolutely love the song "Trial By Fire", as well as many others. On the other hand, I cannot stand "Baby I'm Leavin You". It just doesnt seem to fit on this album or any other for that matter. There are also a few great Neal solos here. It has a lot more of the blues feeling to it.

ROR is my favourite just for Perry's voice, but your comparison to Hall and Oates is spot on :)

I got the original CD in the mail, popped it into my computer and sat right here where I am now and listened to the whole thing. My first reaction to that CD was "What the fuck is that?" Journey's music had been losing it's rock edge, and in this one, there just wasn't one. Now, 10 years down the road, I guess I've changed or something because there are some songs on there that I've been listening to quite a bit.

It's definitely their softest album creatively and musically. There are way too many Image songs on there.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Three different albums with three different approaches...If you want let's say a kind of an "ethereal" experience sound wise, then you should enjoy TBF.
Some people criticize the album because it doesn't rock ehough some others because it's a Journey "anomaly"(like ROR),but all in all it's a unique album.
I'd say get it.

Trial By Fire is an odd album to be certain.

There are some very bland, yawn-filled ballads on there.

But then again, there are several songs that are truly unique in the Journey catalogue, and are evidence that the band actually decided to take a few creative risks.

Message of Love- People say it's "Separate Ways" re-done... the only similarity I see between the two is in the vibe, and in the keyboard interlude. Everything else is different. Perhaps more driving and urgent than "SW."

One More- One of my top 5 favorite Journey songs! Absolutely stunning and breathtaking epic. Very cutting-edge performances from the rhythm section, Perry, and especially Schon. Rips me right in two.

Can't Tame The Lion- Neal's guitar tone and intro. Case closed. Never heard a guitar played like that until this song. Incredible.

Colors of the Spirit- They used pan flute in this song, for crying out loud. I love it. Very dreamy tune..

Still She Cries- Breathtaking. My favorite Journey "ballad." Every single member of the band puts on an emotional performance here. The guitar solo from Neal literally made me shiver when I heard it for the first time. Friga... damn. Just LISTEN for Friga's amazing key-tinkling.

Get the album for these five songs alone, I say...

TBF is nothing like Frontiers...and has a more somber tone than any other Perry era album. Pretty heavy on the ballads but I think it has some of Perry's best vocal work on it.

If you like Perry for his ability to convey the emotion in a song I don't think there is a better example than "It's Just The Rain".

Beyond that I would buy it for Message Of Love and When You Love A Woman.

Oh yeah! I forgot...I'd buy for Neals guitar work on Can't Tame The Lion too....Fantastic

TBF is a really good album..Easy to Fall is stellar..its the mirror to Sweet and Simple.. But not Journey good. ROR same thing..Has its moments.. Man are you missing out on Arrival.. I put that one at the top and its not even close.. Escape>Arrival.. Perry>Augeri I liked Red 13.. Red 13/State of Grace was damn good.. Absolutely loved the Time!! Try it and get back to me..Listen a few times to give it a chance..I would be curious to know what you think..

i'm going to get it.i really liked when you love a woman which is one i did hear.i really like the ballads as much as the rockers these days.journeys worst album is ten times better than most bands best efforts so i know there will be quite a few good ones on it.if there are six solid songs i'll be happy with it.......

Castles Burning is an awesome rocker!. So is Message Of Love, Forever In Blue and Can't Tame The Lion. When You Love A Woman is one of their greatest ballads. So yes it's a very good album.
