You nailed it with this one...I usually rewind and listen to that part when I play this song.

It's insane.

Hard to pick just one, as that clip shows, there are tons to choose from.
That line from Sweet and Simple that you mentioned is definitely a favorite of mine. Also, the end of Somethin' To Hide, and the final "La la la la LAY IT" from Lay it Down just to name a few.

too many great ones to choose from... Love the high notes in la do da... & Sweet and Simple

also, on Do You Recall from Captured:

"ooh, baby, lohohohOHOHOHOOHOHOHHOHVE"

& later;

"That keeps us wONderINNnnnnn"

Ok, help on this one:

on Natural Thing, is it the "blue lAACCEe" that gets up there? Love that song.

I'd go with the end of MF, and Somethin' to Hide. Too bad he can't hit those notes anymore. But neither can 99% of humans.

I like the high parts in After The Fall. I like his high notes after his voice deepened. That other shit sounds like someone pounded a railroad spike through his nut sack.

Steve Perry's finest vocal periods (for me) was from '84 - '94. He's amazing in any incarnation, and I also enjoy his more soulful, huskier side now.

I concur, grasshopper. :P Pre 1981 I don't even listen to. Can't really stand any of those songs. I listen to Escape, Street Talk, Frontiers, ROR, and TBF.

you don't even like the boots from that era?

like on comiskey park, he's not quite so high, lol

the Frontiers tour is my favorite in terms of voice though. I agree SM, i love his deeper voice best.

Good point.

I interpret "now" to be "modern", ie: "I Stand Alone" to the "I Can See It In Your Eyes" remix with Guff. Without proper training, I know he couldn't carry on the old notes anymore -- though he still has some substantial range, control, and power left in him given how sparse he uses his voice. I definately think he could do a Journey: Unplugged session that someone suggested a while back.

Oh man, how to choose just one!

I've got a playlist on my ipod dedicated to songs with Perry's killer high notes.

First and foremost, Wheel in the Sky. Am I right to say that no other Journey frontman has even attempted to hit that note during that song?

Then Sweet and Simple, Something to Hide and Mother Father. In that order.

Yeah, that's what it is
Those notes
No mere notes any human voice can make
Surely resonant sounds of celestrial orchestration.
something out of this world
that resonates between us
his voice melding with our souls
lifting us out of our bodies
if just for that brief time
To feel it must be to fly
through the voice of Steve Perry...

You mean the notes or chord rather in the middle?
Its definitely a minor chord.

It's spine tingling...

I can do it
I;m sort of into the minor keys...

I think what makes it different
is a few voices can sing chords
where as most can sing notes...
if that makes any sense

Wow. No-one has mentioned "Winds of March". For years, I've been (unsucessfully) practicing that ridiculous phrase,

"...You are my child
you came like the morning light
With all the love in your eyes..."

And that, to me, is unquestionably the most amazing Steve Perry moment of them all...and there have been sooo many.

Sweet & Simple and Departure tour 1980 live Winds of March would scare any burglar away if played over yard speakers.

No doubt! More than just hitting the high note, the vocal performance on that tune (Winds of March) is incredible!

Phen,

I don't know who you are, but you have great tastes. I"m with you, Sweet and Simple is it for sure. I believe it's the highest note recorded during Perry's career. And I don't think you'll ever hear it live for a reason.

L8r,

Aaron

All of them in Lay it Down. His vocal gymnastics in that song are almost other worldly.

That's so true. About 7 months ago, the only I would listen to 20 times in a row was Winds Of March. :P I space out my playings of songs now. Perry's voice is so mesmorising on that track, and that's saying something.

That's mine...the end of 'Something To Hide' when Perry's singing along with Neal's guitar then hits that huge note at the end...

Also the note in 'Sweet And Simple'...

It's not an especially high note, but it's a damn good one. Mother, Father Houston '81... Perry's "Ohhhhh, beliiieee-eee-ee-vvve......" always gets me. *spellbound*

Best performance of that track, ever. I shiver every time I hear it.
Totally agree! But, nothing beats the 1980 Houston concert and the end of Patiently. Nothing! *SIGH*

Its funny how everyone is pissed JSS didn't get the gig.. But he could never hit any of those notes and if you say he can,you are completely bullshitting yourself..I have tons of respect for Jeff..But that isn't his range.. Arnel ,I think could very well do it..I would love to see him try..If he couldn't its ok,but he for sure is the only one I think has a shot of doing either Sweet and Simple or Something to hide..
I never really felt like I was part of the band "Steve Perry"

I agree with you to an extent, but I doubt very highly that ANYONE could hit those notes with the same strength and emotion and cut right through a person the way Perry could. Can't be replicated! Period.
