Are You Musical?

Postby youkeepmewaiting » Fri Dec 21, 2007 8:52 am

Simple question, Can you play any instruments? Do you write songs? and Do you have any examples of your work?

Ive always found it really easy to create melodies and general song ideas without much effort but have never been able to find an output for my music idea, so a few months ago i bought guitar (because it looked nice) and then i decided to learn how to play it. Now its the best thing ive ever bought. For hours and hours i can just be sitting down playing and writing. And im getting some decent recording equipment for Christmas and cant wait.

Drumming has always come very naturally to me, ive taken after my Dad with that.

I dont have any examples yet but hopefully after christmas i will.

There must be quite a few people on this forum who write music? So, lets hear it :D

I write songs and lyrics.

I claim the bass as my main instrument, and also play guitar/keys.

I was in a band for half a year but we recently parted ways.

No (good) examples of my stuff are online though, maybe someday soon.

Haha, thanks but no thanks. :P I have a good job doing cartoons for Cassie 'n' Fyfe. Unless this pays vast amounts of money, I'm turning it down. :D

I used to play drums in a band, then pulled a Phil Collins and moved up front to take over as lead singer. Unfortunately, the only recordings of our original music was on cassette tape. We never opted to spend the money for a real recording session. All our sessions were recorded with a box radio. :)

I think I still have a tape lying around someplace. Just don't know how to digitize it.

Started as a drummer in HS and switched to guitar and vocals> I played in a number of bands over the years, the most sucessful ne lasted three years and we played around the Nashville area quite a bit.

Ah, but that was when I was young and ever so foolish...

I have some stuff I wrote at http://www.reverbnation.com/Skyoffire . I haven't been able to record much else since I no longer have a mac/garageband program to use, which was most helpful.

I'm a professional guitar player and damn proud of it. Play in two different bands when I'm at home. Just did some live and session work in Nashville about a month ago. Awesome place if you love live music. Play, write, and practice all the time.

I play guitar, bass, keyboards, and (when necessary) sing. I don't enjoy doing lead vocals...or lead anything really...I'm more the quiet guy in the corner that fills out the sound, and I'm happy with that. I've been part of two bands with some pretty good local success....recorded a few demos here and there....and have since become more of the "production" type of person.

I have always sang in choirs, including Hull University Union Choir when I was studying as a mature student a few years back, it was all operatic/ classical, And I'm just toying with the Idea of Joing the Hull choral Union, they're on the lookout for new members, the material they do is pretty rigorous but enjoyable and I know they on the lookout for Alto voices And when I don't have my operatic/classical head on I can sing normally:)
I cant read music, but can play instruments once I get the idea of what goes where and when. I have a guitar and a keyboard.
We also have in the house a Trumpet, Violin,( Catherine's she does read music and plays in a brass band) Harmonica and Penny whistle, I also had many moons ago a squeeze box, and up to 2 years ago I had an electric guitar as well as my acoustic :)

I don't write creatively so songs are out- although I have written poetryand I am a trained to critique literature, but like to create visual works always coming up with various designs and concepts for anything even stuff that could be used for CD covers...have I got too much time on my hands? ;)

I did that in high school, too. I also played bass clarinet my Senior year - very cool instrument. I did a little piano, but nothing to write home about. My best instrument is the radio or CD player!!

That's what we did too - we didn't do originals - we did covers - in fact - I like to reminisce a little - so I keep a copy of our set list around for new conversations or new people...now this is the set list that we were doing on nights when we had a full set. RARELY, if ever, did it change. We always had a first set and a fifteen minute break, then we'd have three acoustics and three vocalists do the second set....and another short beer break....and then we'd do the last set.

First Set
Let It Rock (Bon Jovi)
Here Comes Trouble (Brian Howe Bad Company)
Home Sweet Home (Motley Crue)
Summer of 69 (Bryan Adams)
The Garden Of Allah (Don Henley)
Top Of The World (Van Halen)
Where The Streets Have No Name (U2)
A Tout Le Monde (Megadeth)
Runnin Down A Dream (Tom Petty)
Heat Of the Moment

Acoustic Set

Welcome to My Nightmare (Alice Cooper)
Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
Silent Lucidity (Queensryche)
Patience (Guns N Roses)
Diamonds and Rust (Sang like priest....played like Joan Baez)
High Enough (Damn Yankees)
Wanted Dead or Alive (Bon Jovi)

Second Set
Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas)
Bad Company (Paul Rodgers Bad Company)
In The Air Tonight (Phil Collins)
Sister Christian (Night Ranger)
Stone In Love (Journey)
Toys In The Attic (Aerosmith)
Animal (Def Leppard)
Juke Box Hero (Foreigner)
Jesus Rode A Harley (Ugly Kid Joe)
Livin on a Prayer (Bon Jovi)
Comfortably Numb (Floyd)

On most occasions...I sang lead vocal on "Summer of 69"....and "the garden of allah" immediately following that. And on "Comfortably Numb" Our singer always sang roger waters, and I always sang david gilmour. Those three, when we did them RIGHT, never changed. And one thing that was always consistent in our shows. Every show we did ALWAYS....never fail..never changed....started with "Let It Rock" and Ended with "Comfortably numb". My biggest gripe in the whole thing is that we played so much bon jovi...but it worked...and people didn't seem to complain a whole lot. As you can see...we were BIG TIME into the bands and songs that carried a lot of harmony vocal....particularly on choruses (Prayer, Animal, Toys, TOTW...etc.

In fact, recently, I've been given the chance to go back out and do a few little acoustic shows here and there (just sing, not really any guitar to it on my part) with one of the local singers with whom I had a short lived run a few years back...it's interesting to see where things lie and land after time away, but it's still fun to do.

Got some jazzy type covers here for you Lar - and anyone else who wants to listen. :) I'm feeling generous.
Hope you like 'em. I don't write or play any instruments. My partner, Andy plays drums, percussion, sax, keyboards, vibraphone, acoustic guitar and blues harp. I'm just the voice. I open up my mouth and out it comes.......
