Sorry dude..your Old is not hitting 160.. What happened is you changed the gears from 3:23's to about 3:73's and your speedo was about 20-30 miles an hour off..Trust me ,I've done it myself.. My Trans am has 2:73 highway gears..Grrr.. I might put 3:42's in..not sure yet..Its still faster than hell..Mine would do 160..Yours isn't aero dynamic enough to do it..The wind would hit it like a brick wall..My 86 corvette convertible Indianapolis 500 edition pace car hit 156.. Still had more..My brothers 2000 Vette with the 6 spd should do 180.. Horsepower means nothing if you don't have the aero dynamics to back it up..

Very good post, however, horsepower means everything. I once had a train with 32,000 HP in 8 locomotives and we pulled 196 cars at 55 mph, on a .5% grade. Trust me dude, HP is everything! But you're right too, because on another trip, I had 24,000 HP and 60 cars of grain and went from 50mph to barely 30 when the fucking wind in the Columbia river gorge hit us. I had her full out, just to do 30!

I have been in the industry for 18 yrs.. Hp means everything when its set up right.. If you have a 69 chevelle with a 427 big block with 505 horsepower and 4:11 gears..guess what.. top end 115.. IF you had 2:73's potentially you could hit 160,but the car isn't aerodynamic enough and its way too damn heavy.. The chevelle would take my 99 Trans am til we hit about 120,then my TA would pull away.. My car would have the top end because of the 2:73's..Its like a bicycle with a big sprocket compared to one with a small sprocket..

Hey J69, I don't know the exacts on what was in the car but here's a little more info. The guy that modified it put what he called an "RV" gear kit or transmission in it. It had both low end torque that could burn out and really high end speed.

It was automatic and the shifting happened later than a normal '79 T/A. It may have had an extra gear at the top end. For reference, here's a clip with a closeup of a '79 speedo, I had the needle all the way around back past the zero at top speed. Since its not marked I was guessing 160 but maybe 140-150.

Would you like to double our bet? If you're so sure, put up the money. Hillary is fine. Rudy is toast. Thompson is toast. Romney, toast.

RF, no offense, I skip your baiting posts. Your hatred for Gore is ridiculous.

You'd have to skip them to remain blissfully oblivious to the truth. The days of the American muscle car is at an end. Bush's eagerness to sign the bill requiring car makers to up fuel economy will result in more American deaths on our roads. Another fine job by the US Gov't.

I don't want Hilary 'cuz she doesn't present anything different. She's been in the public eye for 15+ years now. If she's so great, why isn't she a shoo in? She should be squashing the competition but isn't. The only candidate that's sounding different than the rest is Ron Paul but he has no shot either.

Sorry StrangeGrey, this theads gonna be all over the place for a bit now.

Frontrunners and people in the public eye always get much more scrutiny. Hillary is by far the smartest one running for president. Ron Paul is cool as shit.

RF, if you think legislation requiring higher miles per gallon is a bad thing, then I am basically done arguing with you.

Uh, yeah I do think it's a bad thing. Firstly, because it does cost thousands of lives a year. Secondly, the free market should dictate what the automakers do. I also don't agree with legislation that tells us what we can and can't eat.

Firstly, how in the holy fucking Hell can this legislation costs thousands of lives? I can't wait to hear this.

Secondly, screw the free market and screw capitalism when it comes down to saving the planet. You close minded morons don't give a flying shit about people that come here after you. Live life, waste the place, die, who cares?

I am sorry, but I just cannot comprehend such a selfish arrogant position as those of conservatives. Selfish, greedy and frankly stupid, is the conservative. I really don't care for your feelings, all I know is we are getting a pro environmental president and a Democrat come next November. I really don't have to argue any longer. I am going to have a fucking stroke if I keep this shit up with you lot.

The CAFE program was established by Congress in 1975. Current CAFE standards require motor vehicle manufacturers' fleets of cars to average 27.5 miles per gallon of gasoline and their fleets of light trucks (which include minivans and SUVs) to average 20.7 miles per gallon.1 The only affordable way for automakers to meet these standards is to reduce the mass and weight of their vehicles.2

This reduction has had deadly consequences. According to a study by the National Research Council (NRC), reductions in vehicle mass and weight necessary to meet CAFE standards increase the risk of death or serious injury in crashes. The NRC study found that vehicle downsizing and downweighting resulted in between 1,300 and 2,600 deaths and between 13,000 and 26,000 serious injuries in 1993 alone.3 A USA Today report, using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, estimated that 46,000 people - nearly as many Americans as lost their lives in the Vietnam War - have died since 1975 as a result of the vehicle downsizing and downweighting due to CAFE standards.4

CAFE standards have also been responsible for several hundred thousand injuries. African-Americans should be particularly concerned about these dangers because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for black children

Rockindeano wrote:Secondly, screw the free market and screw capitalism when it comes down to saving the planet. You close minded morons don't give a flying shit about people that come here after you. Live life, waste the place, die, who cares?

BS. You sound like a good socialist here Dean. Funny I thought you were someone who didn't like being told what to do. Guess not. Disapointing.

If it's selfish and greedy to expect responsible restricted government. Then I am selfish and greedy. Now I'm being told what lightbulb I have to use? Might as well just have the gov't issue us our gov't vehicles and 13 cu. feet of living space per person. Freedom, who needs it? Maybe it was overrated.

Freedom, who needs it? Maybe it was overrated.

Oh please, this administration has taken more freedom than any pro environment movement could ever try to. Spare me this wrapping in the US flag bullshit and this freedom is lost garbage.

And guess what, just how much is freedom worth when there is no place to host it?

Perhaps you should read the GOP talking points before you simply copy and paste. Although I am sure they(GOP), would prefer that black kids die before white kids.

You pulled your head out of you ass for this witty remark? Yeah, the GOP's racist, so says the party of senator Robert Byrd D/KKK
No, wait. It was Al Gore who got in Bush's face shouting, "Do you support quotas? Do you support quotas?" During the 2000 debates. Bush rightfully ignored him. Bush doesn't support quotas because he believes whoever's most qualified to do the job should get the job regardless of race. Yeah, it's the GOP that's racist. Really weak Dean.
