I think Somethin' To Hide, Patiently, and Sweet and Simple are great examples of Perry's range and control.

Still They Ride and It's Just The Rain I think are two good examples of his ability to emote.

Faithfully - This song probably represents what made Perry who he was, in terms of showing his ability, like nobody else, to emote, through the lyrics of a song. All you have to do is listen to Jonathan Cain's version of this same song, and even the Perry haters will realize, pretty quickly, that without Perry's soaring vocals, there isn't a single Journey track that would have ever seen the light of day!

So many memorable songs, that's what makes us devoted SP/Journey fans, whether from the old days or just discovered the Voice a few years ago.

I agree with John from Boston, Faithfully is the song that defined SP at his vocally best. The earlier songs may be at his peak, technically proficient-wise, but I like his later, deeper voice better.

I absolutely cannot listen to WCTNGOF without a lump in my throat. The way he emoted out the lyrics, no one can ever deliver that song like SP.

Of course, all of Perry's vocal performances rank among the best in history. But in order to determine which is the "most outstanding", we must look at criteria.

Are we discussing technical difficulty? Then most assuredly "Mother, Father", "Lay It Down", "Sweet and Simple", "Winds of March", "Somethin' To Hide", "Still They Ride", and "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" are some of the very hardest songs to sing, given Perry's glass-breaking head voice and falsetto.

But not all of my favorite Perry-led songs are his most difficult to sing. As I've said before, I am really partial to Perry's voice from 1984 to present day. "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" might be my all time favorite Journey ballad, though not without competition -- you can't top the musical brilliance working between Neal, Jon, Steve, and Perry at that point. But I also enjoy his huskier voice in "When You Love A Woman" and "If He Should Break Your Heart".
