The only thing that matters, in my own opinion, is how Christ-like one acts in their everyday life. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Season's Greetings...that doesn't matter to me. Whatever is comfortable for each person is okay with me and I will accept all three given to me. It is how a person conducts their lives that matters. We have an administration in power right now that claims to be Christian, that wants to preserve Christmas, and yet they support the death penalty, they support torture of prisoners, they allow children in our country to go without health insurance, their policies allow the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer, they are not good stewards of our earth. What do they actually mean when they say "Merry Christmas?" I don't get it.

Interestingly enough, I am meeting/working with/living with more and more people who, every year, increasingly, are not interested in receiving any gifts at all. I think/hope we are moving away from that. Perhaps, in an ideal world, we will start doing things for each other and for those less fortunate than ourselves instead of exchanging material gifts. Decorating, feeling festive, spending time with each other, hearing the music, sharing a meal seem to be becoming more important to many people than the exchange of gifts.

The point is that "Christmas" was NEVER totaly about Christ. The festival has ALL of its true roots in paganism. The church ADDED Christ to Christmas. Nowadays people bitch that it is being taken away? Funny, read your history...back then the religious fundamentalists HATED Christmas. Christian England banned it. The puritans in America tried to do the same...and there was no Christmas holiday in America for a VERY, VERY long time. It was a Roman festival...a time to get drunk and have orgies. THAT is the roots of this holiday - not the birth of Jesus.

Also read your own Christian religion. Like has been said, you are supposed to be following the path of Christ EVERY DAY...not one day a year. Jesus spoke out AGAINST the religious legalism of his time...the "you must do ____ to be in the favor of God," attitude. The truth is he probably would have played down both Christmas and maybe even how we celebrate Easter. I think he would have said it is YOUR rebirth into salvation which should be celebrated, not his birth into a human life. As he tore down the shops in the temple, I think he would have went to center of your city and pushed down the town tree and told those who watched that celebrating a human, pagan, life is not why he was sent to Earth - and to stop pretending that it is so important to him and God...because it is only important to your own selfish needs and desires.

Even today, there are some Christians who do not celebrate Christmas for the above reasons...Jehova Witnesses and Mormons. They have fairly crazy ideas but they are right on the money on this one.

And, I am not 'against Christmas'. I am against religious zealous pretending the holiday should be all about Christ. It NEVER was and NEVER should be. I am also against the wannabe politicians who make an issue out of something that should be a good time for all. Shut the hell up and enjoy the holidays. Who cares if they say, "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". At least they are not saying, "Get out of my face you religious bastard!"

There is no 'war against Christmas'. There is a 'war' of politicians wanting your support. Christmas is just one tool they use to get that support...by pissing you off against the other side.

Perhaps Monker is a bit too intelligent for you. Fuck, didn't you go to school? He explained it quite well actually.

Excellent post,Monker. There are very few people who know these things and even if they read about it they reject the idea or find it hard to believe.
Last year I have written an article about the origins of Christmas, pointing out the pagan roots of these festivities - indeed it was the Romans celebrating the Saturnalia, the beginning of the winter solstice. They were worshiping Saturn - the god of sowing.Only after Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, they turned Saturnalia into Christmas and made it a "christian" holiday.

I got so much hate mail after that article.

You are right Monker - the truth is in the history. And it's in the Bible too! In the Scriptures, there is not one single mention of ANY kind of festivities held on Jesus' Birthday.Instead,Herod and other "kings" like him were making their day of birth a cosmic-like event requiring national festivities.
Jesus doesn't need that. He's content only with our love for Him.

Christmas is nice, sure, good food, great gifts, happy kids and all,but from a religious point of view we should make every day a Christmas day.

Um...

Didn't mean to cause such a firestorm...

These are lyrics from a Bing Crosby song that I remember hearing when I was young....IMO it seems to jive with what the Commentary was speaking of:

"The little gift you send
On Christmas Day...
May not bring back the Friend
You turned away...

So, may I sugggest
The meaning of Christmas?

It's not the things you do
At Christmas Time...

But, the Christmas Things you do
All year through...."

....that point is what I was trying to say, with my original post.....

Bad bad Santa

Where's my present
Think you lost it sipping too much cheer
They shoulda took your license
When you ran into shadow that year

Bet you had another accident
Rammed Blitzen in the rear
Packages crashing everywhere
Reindeer skidding through the air

Run Run Santa
This is no laughing matter
Rudolphs gonna get ya shaky derriere

So please don't fall
Cause if he catches ya
He's gonna ring your jolly balls
Bad Bad Santa
