For those of you that are Toto fans...

If you call yourself a fan of ANY song from Toto, you owe it to yourself to check out what I think is shaping up to be the best live dvd ever released!!! I'd take this over ANY of the live dvd's I've got (and I have a lot!). I have no doubt that they're using pre-recorded backing vocals (Like everyone else these days!), but they sound fan-freakin-tastic!!!

I hope this link works, but if it doesn't, go to www.toto99.com and click on the "Falling in between" live dvd. Here's the link...

Hope you enjoy!

Yeah, lots of taped backing vox...and a few people (myself included) seem to think some of Bobby's leads were re-recorded, but visually this looks to be an amazing DVD. I was pretty impressed with the Amsterdam one but this looks even cooler. I'm really looking forward to it, even if Luke and the band's perfectionism is sort of a blessing and a curse in this case. Looks like this one will make fans pretty happy though.

I wasn't going to touch on the Lead vocals, but they've definitely been "Doctored" too. Either live, or after the fact. The important thing though, is how good the quality is, and what an awesome dvd it's going to be! I will buy this dvd the first chance I get, and I think the sound quality is the best I've ever heard on a live dvd!!! Hopefully we'll get it soon.

Thats awesome, i am sure there will be vocals that are not perfect there.

Ok question time

1. Who is the dark guy on keyboards.

2. Who is the old man with what appears to be a "wizard's beard" playing Bass? lol

1. Greg Phillinganes. He is the current keyboardist. David Paich had stopped touring and only did studio work other than a few tv appearances. Luke and Paich had a falling out recently over Paich's licensing of "Rosanna" for a tv commercial, so who knows where their relationship goes from there. Phillinganes plays all keyboard parts and sings Paich's vocal parts (perhaps with the help of a harmonizer), including lead vox on "Africa."

2. Leland Sklar. Mike Porcaro injured his hand and needed recovery time. Sklar is a famed studio/session bassist and is just filling in until Porcaro's hand heals.

No problem. Saw Toto (Luke, Kimball, Si Phi, Spinner, Phillinganes, and Sklar) in Connecticut this summer. Second row, dead center in front of Luke. Awesome show, but wish they would have played White Sister and Home of the Brave. Some of the vox may have been canned, but it was still worth the trip from NJ.

Phillinganes adds a lot of life to the show. You may have seen him play previously in Eric Clapton's touring band. He sang second vocals on "White Room" (clips on YouTube if you are interested).

Even if some vocals are doctored up, it looks like Toto still puts on some amazing shows. I'd love to see them live someday, and I'll probably end up getting this DVD. Vocals aren't everything to me, I'm more of an instrumentally-based kinda guy, I'd pay a good amount just to see Lukather/Phillips/Sklar/Phillinganes/Spinner stand on stage and play for hours on end.

I saw them 4 times on the Falling in Between tour...once in Milwaukee, twice in Chicago, and once in LA at the Wiltern. Fucking amazing each time, technology and all.

Here's how you know the lead vocals have been...erm..."fixed." I've seen Toto play "Pamela" 5 times in my life, and not ONCE has Bobby ever hit the note in the chorus in the line "it may not heal this time" where the melody line goes up a half-step. I have no idea what it is, he just never really got to that note...the man does amazing things with his voice, and still sounds great at age 59, but that's just the one thing that I've never heard him reach, and on the FiB live CD, it's completely flawless.

(not faulting his talents...god knows I couldn't hit the note either ...but there's definitely a discrepancy there) I'd prefer DVD's without so much post-production but I'll take what I can get just to watch these guys play.

Oh boy, you should hear what Luke told me about canned vox, and this and that, and how he was gonna pound me and oh shit.

I am on record as saying I think toto blows, but Luke is cool.

I don't know man, these guys are still going strong, and they are talented. From what I read from other bands, they still think TOTO are the finest musicians to date. When Perry was fronting Journey things would be different. But there really isn't many old school groups left that are still good, or have their original members.

Just take a look at what has become of our band Journey, sure they will release a kick ass new CD. But the magic that was Perry, Cain, Schon has left the building. With TOTO the magic is still there, if you are a TOTO fan that is.

I'd be interested in hearing what he had to say.

Toto used to have extra musicians/singers onstage through the 1999 Mindfields tour, then my guess is they decided it was cheaper to lower the number of people onstage on a tour and just have some of the stuff on tape. Sometimes it's not too bad, but on some stuff like "Pamela" and "Bottom Of Your Soul" the taped vox really stuck out a bit much.

Really though...it's about watching the guys play, more than the vocals I think. They're a lot of fun to watch, especially if you're a musician.
