I'm telling you, Arnel's voice and Journey are going to surprise a bunch of people when the new CD comes out. Because I know some of Arnel's capabilities by a first hand account. As for the voice, I seriously doubt time will have any impact. A singer doesn't take drugs, drinks, smokes and pretty much takes care of his vocal cords, it will still be fine. That's why I'm still able to hit the high notes. I was in a band doing Air Supply covers in 1999 and last weekend I went out to do a little karaoke for the very first time in a matter of years and I was still able with ease to hit those high notes. Started off with a very easy moderate ranged ones by Rush - Tom Sawyer and Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, but gradually worked up to the more insane ones. The first few songs was a real bitch at first, but it all came back to me after that for the remainder of the evening. Now another thing that could ruin a singers vocal cords is doing tunes that are far in style from what they are designed for. Take for instance Offspring. That guy Dexter used to scream like a motherfucker in most of the tunes he did. But can that guy do it the same now. I'd like to know.

What was also interesting was how many people did Journey songs that night. An Asian chicky did Faithfully and then this other dude did Separate Ways. The Asian chicky did another Journey song later on Open Arms. Both the people doing these Journey tunes was Filipino. I got to wondering if they were doing Journey tunes because they know of Arnel joining with Journey. I didn't say a friggin word. The chick did Journey horribly but did that song Umbrella half way decent. The dude also sucked big time but he was able to pinch out a squeal of high notes, but he didn't have the hang time required and would loose it.

All in all, it was just another night at Scary-oke and I drank my pot of burning hot straight black coffee, did some singing and a lot of smiling and laughing.

Ummm... I will say I don't hear an accent at all, but this sounds like Air Supply melodies with all the emotional depth of Jack Wagner.

I can only hope Arnel brings it better than this on the new Journey material. I suppose he will given there's a producer involved and Arnel himself said he had to learn the songs in a short period of time (which pretty much says he didn't write and probably barely contributed to the melodies much like Augeri on Arrival).

Time will tell. They better post some serious samplers for us. I'm not buying it blind.

Who cares if you like him? If you're trying to convince me 'he's the guy', show me, don't tell me. Threads like this with examples of his previous professionally recorded originals service that, so I say bring 'em on.

That being said, this sample doesn't impress me much. If this is what he sounds like on their new stuff, Journey would have been better off hiring Mickey Thomas. At least then they wouldn't be laughed at for replacing soto with a you-tuber.

I can hear the accent. In this song, it's definitely subdued. I still maintain the accent isn't as serious as the lack of stage presence...combined with the fact that Journey has this laughable stigma of booting singers and suddenly hiring a guy from SE asia.

It's sorta like serial dating retarded girls. Everyone knows your intentions are rather sinister, no matter how good looking the girl is, she's still mentally unable to handle the relationship.

I could give two shits how he sounds singing Perry's songs with Perry's inflection and Perry's melodies. If this is how he sounds when he has to originate his own thing then he (and Journey) will continue to stand in Perry's shadow.

Like I said, I'll give it a fair chance, but the man has got to bring it more than "it's over" quality vocals to impress me. I have higher standards.

Yeah, that was one of the top songs that chicks just loved listening to at our gigs. Personally I wish that I could sound more like Steven Tyler or Sammy Haggar. But I was just not designed that way and if I try to be, I end up screwing myself up. The Great One once told me that one of the worst things you can do is sing songs that do not fit your voice. Plus, my woman adores Air Supply so much that when I look at her as I'm singing them, she looks up at me in love. So that's cool and I can live with what I got, I am very thankful of life. Funny, the very first song I ever sung to her was in Japan. We were all at some huge club for Japanese standards that usually had live bands. Go on Youtube and type in Pumpkin Yokosuka and there are lots of band videos in that place now. But back then, we rented it for a private going away party for one of our friends. We were bbqing up a bunch of Japanese food along with some nice thick beef steaks. So we were all taking turns singing up on the stage doing karaoke and the very first song she ever heard me sing was "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. Sure it's a gay song and even gayer when a dude sings it, but I didn't give a damn, my hot ass woman was right there with me. And talk about a Japanese chick turning "round eye" right in front of my face, it was funnier then shit watching her tripping because I sang it so well. She's a singer too. She did a song in Japanese called "Paradise" off Hamada Mari's Lunatic Doll Album.

This clip should bring back those fading and very early eighties glam rock images you probably remember. The band playing with her is Loudness. And the backup vocalist with the sunglasses is her sister.

I don't see anything that resembles Air Supply in this song that Arnel is singing on that link, except for maybe that it's a love song. I don't think Arnel will ever be doing any more covers from now on. But if he did, I think he'd do Roxette's "Wish I Could Fly" very well.
