OT: New Year's Resolutions?

Postby Rip Rokken » Wed Jan 02, 2008 1:35 am

Heard a great chat on the radio the other day about how New Year's Resolutions usually don't go too far... But still, I enjoy making them! I did skip making any last year, but have a few for this year. Mine are about God, church, music, family time and fitness, pretty much.

Also am starting off the New Year with a new PC at the office that I spent several hours getting ready yesterday. It runs Vista Business on a Core-2 Duo processor and 3GB RAM (had to stick within the budget they allowed me). I was pleased that it is so dang fast, and I've been having fun with the gadgets -- even added an eBay Sidebar... haha! Now what I need is a MR message board feed.... haha!

Anyone else making New Year's Resolutions, and want to share?

Only resolution I make is to never make resolutions - They just lead to disappointment when you fail.

I said this over at Frank's new site "The Music Saloon" and I will say it here.

No resolutions. I do whatever the hell I feel like doing in life and let the chips fall where they may.

I bought a new desktop computer yesterday. 500 GB hard drive, 3GB RAM, 22" widescreen monitor. Pretty damn sweet. :P

I can totally understand that. I do feel, though, that our lives are about change. I feel that we (hopefully) go thru life learning lessons, most of them probably the hard way, and that we hopefully learn to keep growing and learning. Trust me, I don't put a great deal of stock in New Year's Resolutions, because yes, they often do fail. That's just human nature. I still think, though, that a new year offers the opportunity to reflect on the past, or the previous year, and think about what could be done better. It's worked for me in the past. I'm also trying to break down this barrier I've huddled so comfortably behind in the past, where I won't try new things for fear of failure. It's kept me from experiencing a lot of great things, or pursuing dreams. That's my situation, anyway -- not trying to apply that to anyone else.

I actually don't make any official resolutions, such as, "This year, I will....". With me, it's more just an honest reflection on my life, and an acknowledgment of areas I need to work on.

I'll tell ya a song that really made me think about things last year -- "Your Great Escape" by Winger, from "Winger IV". Great lyrics, and really made me consider the way I've dealt with opportunities in the past. If anyone is interested in seeing the lyrics, PM me and I'll send them to you.

Haha, nice! I used to be that way, and probably are just a little bit, but this year I am going to be a lot more amicable, tolerant, cordial, forgiving and accepting- that is for this Board. In real life, I am placing myself 5th in line, behind Wyatt, Bruce, Cheyanna, and Lula. Shut up AR, I can hear you laughing in Baltimore from here in California. :)

And you are going to buy the new Dokken album as well! :P

Seriously, I was the same way. AR's philosophy works much better for a single guy, and that was me to a "T". Took me a few years of marriage to realize that I couldn't just do whatever I wanted to, and cut people off when they didn't agree with me. I can't think like an ape anymore, and if I've got to live with them, I might as well do my best to help make their world great as well. Most of the time it's just the little things... Can't tell you how many times my wife has called to ask if I wanted to go get something to eat, and I replied "I've already eaten", because I snuck out and grabbed a bite before I got home from work. Now I've started calling her before I do so, and asking if they'd like to join.

I just continued to live like a single guy, or a roommate, making many decisions only for myself for several years. I wasn't that bad a husband -- not trying to intimate that -- but I just didn't give my family as much time and attention as I could, and wasted a lot of opportunities, even if I had the best of intentions. One of the best Christmas gifts I got was this small little book called "Father to Daughter: Life Lessons on Raising a Girl", and just flipping thru it made me realize how many mistakes I was making.

My brother-in-law gave me a book a few years back called "Tender Warrior" by former Green Beret Stu Weber which really tears down the myth of what being a man is all about when a family is involved. I never finished reading it, but think I'm going to check it out again.

Anyway, good for you, dude! And good for everyone that has a great honor of having to live with us... :P

Oops! I thought you were single... haha! I'm sure you are a good husband and dad, though. "Doing whatever you want" includes being a good family guy. :P Dude, those little girls will melt your heart.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about doing myself! Seriously though, I've got to have shoulder surgery, and once I heal from that, I'm gonna be hitting the gym pretty hard. I've gotta whip my ass back into shape!

New Years Resolutions

Postby Tracie555 » Wed Jan 02, 2008 4:46 am

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

This is the first time in many years that I am actually doing the resolution thing. My resolution for 2008 is to finally get my lazy/tired ass back into exercising again. I am sooo over the frumpy

Good-bye to the Suckfest that was 2007

Take care,

Tracie
