I'd like to hear your perspective of why ROR is still Journey. Seriously. Maybe it would increase my appreciation of the album.

That's like, way too much work and I'm not that eloquent. My opinion is ROR just sounds more like Journey. Maybe it's because there was no 10-year-hiatus and change in music climate between Front and ROR.

Okay :D

I just asked because I respect your opinion. Maybe sometime when you're feeling verbose. :P

ARRIVAL - first three songs bury any combination of 3 songs off of TBF.

And "To Be Alive Again" is fantastic.

Arrival - many fewer tracks that I continually skip over compared to TBF.

No doubt Perry is one of the all time greats, but aside from about 5 songs, TBF is just a snooze fest.

TBF will probably make good nursery music for the baby when he arrives though.

I love how the loon contingent tries to call it their masterpiece, too :P

Sorry, all you KNOW it's just because it was perry's pet album, come on admit it.

They aren't.

Not an After The Fall, Still They Ride or Happy To Give to be found.

ok I have to disagree and I'm not a loon  ............It's Just The Rain is a beautiful, soulful song that can sit right up there with WCTNGOF.

Trial By Fire. Message of Love ranks up with one of hte best Journey songs, and Still she Cries reminds me of Infinity. Those two songs beat out the couple good songs on Arrival

Hey, dude from one Augeri guy to an Augie gal, I'll take I'm Not That Way up with all the old ballads.

That thing is just "Sweet And Simple."

There are only two ballads on TBF that stack up IMO. When You Love a Woman and Still She Cries. Its's Just the Rain is a completely boring tune to me. It sounds like a tune from Perry's FTLOSM CD. If you liked FTLOSM, you will probably like most the ballads on TBF. Just my humble opinion

STORY_TELLER wrote:Trial by Fire by a landslide. Arrival should have been a third album from Bad English. It's not a Journey album. Augeri was the weakest link in the talent pool of that lineup.

from a technical standpoint, Augeri doesn't have the girth that perry had. SA is very low in the mix. his voice is thin and shrill. even studio tricks can't enhance the lack of tone he had. on the other hand, listen to the soundscape that perry's voice fills in the overall mix. perry's voice, in combination with overall production, and better songs gives TBF more life.

don't get me wrong, i like arrival, particularly track #5 and track 1, but overall it falls short.

Always going to be Arrival over TBF for me.

I am open to someone educating me on how to listen to TBF without wanting to slit my wrists.

Agreed.

Only a few songs I can listen to on TBF, and WTF was up with Baby I'm A Going To Kill Myself If I Have To Listen To This Song All The Way Through?

I love almost every track on Arrival. Too bad that in the last 13 times I saw Journey, I only heard one track off Arrival- Higher Place- and only heard it once.

I pick TBF,

even though it has 2 of the worst journey songs to me, The horrendous magic moments song, and the raggea throw away.

It aslo has a lot of filler,
the jungle song,
the bad bluesy ballad,
the title song,
the break your heart song
and yeah, even the awesome guitar song, (should have been a no vocals song) the lion song.

The songs that are awesome sure are though

MOL
One More
WYLAM
Forever in Blue
Castles Burning
I Can see it in Your Eyes
Easy To Fall
Still She Cries
Its just the rain - i know a perry song really, but one of his best.

thats 9 songs, drop the rest and add 1 more rocker (CTTL as an instumental?????) and this album kicks major *SS!

I like it too. I've started listening to TBF quite a bit lately. Is this what happens when we get older? We start to mellow out and listen to sappy love songs? Tell me it isn't true.

TBF

Postby annie89509 » Wed Jan 02, 2008 12:08 pm

Is this topic back on? I'm with Rick, the older one gets, the more one appreciates this record, I think. Today, I just happened to put this cd on rotation, listened to it all day long, and it just made me warm and fuzzy inside. Maybe it's a cold weather record.

ESCAPE is their singular masterpiece, no doubt, recorded in their prime. TBF shows their mature side, still plenty of uptempo songs for the Journey fan, though. I don't get the snoozefest comments. The only really slow songs, imo, (which might be classified as SP solo ala FTLOSM) are Don't Be Down on Me Baby, When I Think of You and It's Just the Rain. The rest sounds Journey to me--uptempo, midtempo, and power ballads. Neal's guitar shredding and Smitty's drum fills are everywhere. And Jon's piano contributions and Ross' bass lines add to the whole package.

Of course, SP's vocals have to be the centerpiece. I think that's what bothers a lot of people about this record. That, and no Lay It Down or Keep on Runnin', but I don't hear those type of songs on Arrival, either. Oops, maybe I ought to listen to that record again, to be sure, lol. What's the most rocking song on Arrival?

Good post. TBF is a better record than I ever gave it credit for. I also agree that Escape was their best effort ever. But my all time favorite Journey era was when Rolie was with the band. They really rocked then.

Most rocking song on Arrival? Higher Place or World Gone Wild. You choose.
