Journey Song Mistakes.

Postby youkeepmewaiting » Thu Jan 03, 2008 2:53 am

Go put on "Walking away from the edge", fast forward it to 1.32seconds to the line "For all of the damage I've done", when SA says "Damage", what one earth is going on?!
I dont know how to describe it but he kinda slurps the word out, ive never noticed it before. Im sure im not gonig crazy, he defintiyl doesnt pronounce the word properly and should of done another take of that verse.

So, opinions on this and do you know of any other mistakes and cock ups in Journey songs?

In "Any Way You Want It," didn't Gregg Rolie's Mellotron misfire and make an unplanned noise, but it sounded alright in the final mix and they decided to keep it?

I think he sings it just fine. If this is a 'mistake' then a LOT of wellknown songs contain them.

This is called phrasing.

Do wrong words count?

I got one that I'm almost sure is a mistake, but I have to check the published lyrics on the album cover and check out Houston and other boots later to hear how it goes on stage before I say anything because the song is DSB so even if I'm right I know there's gonna be arguing about it. (I think someone mis-sang something.... oooooh boy am I looking for trouble or what?!?! )

You are right,if you're talking about the Tom Snyder show clip, where someone messed up the DSB lyrics. It's on YouTube.

Alright, here it is... I noticed this a few months back while playing Escape in the car one day - something didn't sound right... "but dare I suggest somethig isn't right? It's the original recording... doesn't that govern?" Well, since I'm the judge, I say no... LOL!

"Just a small town girl.... livin' in her lonely world...
He took the midnight train goin' annnnnyyyywheeeere..."

I played it over and over on the way home until my ears bled before posting this, and that IS what is on the album, so no arguments. And it doesn't seem right, does it?

The lyrics on the original vinyl say "She took the mindnight train..."
(yeah I know, lyrics can be misprinted... but...)
Every live recording I have of this song says "She took...."
And the first line of the song indicates that we're talking about a girl, therefore logically it SHOULD be "She took..."

But a whole bunch of people weren't paying attention on recording day, or something, and "He took" made it on the album.

This one proves my case... Houston '81... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip1zsUIosoA

(I don't really care about proving it - just any excuse to haul out videos from this show... :D )

There is definately a "casual slur" on that word - so to speak. Never really noticed it before.. But what a great song -

I didn't mind RED 13, but this was by far the best song on there.. the guitar at the end is unreal. IT IS A DEPRESSING track... but I Love it!!

Interesting point, now that you mention it. In the song Suzanne, towards the end of the song at the point of "2:38" Perry sings the Suzanne bit, when he finishes her name, it appears he swallows or something, but i've thought that it was mistake perhaps? take a listen :)

Please, let me know what you think.

While it could indeed be a mistake there is also one other option.

I'm currently working on a live DVD project. On this DVD I do leadvocals on one song and being a straight guy I sing about a "her" or "she" in the lyrics. Someone else is doing the
audio mixing and I was listening to a rough mix and heard myself sing "he", where I'm SURE it's "she". It turns out that the engineer put a gate on the vocal tracks. In this case I sang the word "she" not so loud and the gate only allowed the "he" part to come though (it discarded the less loud "s"). When I first heard this I freaked :-)

So, the he or she question in DSB could also be a technical screw up ;-)

Indeed it could, but a mistake is a mistake and that's the topic here, so in either situation, it qualifies. :D
Good offering though. Certainly a possibility.

I believe that too.

Regarding that gate on the vocal tracks,I know that Elton John uses that technique not only in the studio but in live shows too. That cuts the too strong "s" thing he has when he's singing.
I remember being at his show and hear him singing "I'm till tanding better than I ever did...I'm till tanding after all thi time.." :? But then someone explained to me the gate thing.
It was funny.Happened in every song, there were almost no "s" sounds,so "she" became "he". Well,Elton likes that anyway.

Now THAT's funny! I don't like it that way so I had my engineer remove the gate :-)
