Sounds great!!!

I played a two bit sleazy dive as a solo act. I was doing a mix of soft rock, blues and pop stuff.
Some biker types were at the bar and I thought they were making fun of me, but at half time, one of them came up and asked me if I'd do some Shania Twain. Bought me a drink, too.
I'd rather play a place like that than some snooty golf club - which I have also done.

I speak from experience.
The rougher the place the more fun it is.
The snootier the place the less likely they are to let their hair down. A lot of the posh folk don't seem to know how to have fun!!!!! That's how it's been for me anyway.

Last golf club I did with the 80's duo show, at half time we had to announce over the mic "The Captain now gives his permission for the gentlemen to remove their jackets."
Bunch of stiffs. We did a shitty Club the following night and I don't think anyone in there had a full set of teeth!
But guess which night was the best gig?? Yep, the rough one.

But when singing is your only job, you have to take all the bookings you can get.
But you'd think it would be the other way round, really, wouldn't ya? :?

I saw Arnel live from about 86' to 91' and then Pinatubo blew up. Hadn't seen him live since. Next time I saw him after that was on youtube. Feel cheated cause I missed 16 years of his performances. Anxious to see him live with Journey now so I can compare it to how he was in the late 80's.

I'm finding the sound on the YouTube clips really poor. And I can't really form an opinion of the guy yet because of that.
So I was just wondering what people who have seen him live thought. :)

This comment would be accurate if I had only found out AP existed when Journey became interested in him. But I knew him personally in the late 80's/early 90's. So a bandwagon I'm not jumping on.

I think Arnel will do just fine in Journey. He's a really good singer. I'm curious and will have a listen I'm sure, but as of now and from what I've heard so far, I'm just not interested. The excitement and emotion/passionate vocals just aren't there for me any more, like they were with Perry and JSS. Have to say I'm far more looking forward to JSS's solo cd coming out late spring/early summer than I am Journey material. And here's hoping Eric Martin releases a new cd or dvd also.

And if THAT's happening, then maybe he should make an appointment to see Steve Augeri's throat specialist now

I'm curious, I've read all of that so many times since AP was announced to be the new lead singer and it's already been pointed out (and obviously disregarded time and again) that AP did 5 shows a week 3 hours at a time singing all kinds of these melodic songs in the smoky bars of Manila and Olongapo City with little to no affect on his singing voice.

Do many of us here actually want the guy to develop some sort of throat affliction that felled SA? If he gets one, it won't be do to belting out the high notes. The guy is 40 years old and has been singing like that since age 15. If he hasn't developed any polyps on his vocal cords from all of that, then why do so many think that being on Journey will hurt him vocally now?

I just don't get :|

Y'all be cool!

My name ain't Suzie

I guess I'm an Arnelian too but I was a Journey fan first 8) Him being on the band is something I'm looking forward to. I call it an INFUSION but thats my humble opinion.

eh, but you're a Journey fan and only came here a week ago? And you know all these facts about Arnel ... from where?

Oh, sorry, all these conspiracy and multiple identity talk got to me.

Sorry, I'm just used to talking Sports when it comes to forums. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who listened to Journey blare over the speakers at a High School Dance, while attempting to cop a feel with whichever girl I was dancing with at the time. Sing the first lines to Open Arms and them HS girls back in the early 80's kinda get woozy

Anyways, if it wasn't for the hiring of Mr. Pineda, I wouldn't have even found this place. There is an interesting lot of characters here. It's very COLORFUL. However, much of what you read from my posts are because I read far too many generalizations from people who just don't know the Filipino way of life and make what are pretty ridiculous assumptions, So I post my views because, there are many of us that live or have lived a very Filipino way of life and will post those things with what I know to be certain. Arnel is one of many talented Filipinos who perform throughout the world. I've posted in other threads about who some of those other people are. I think the karaoke/dog thing bothers me the most. As some of the most vocal posters hear like say Deano, the guy has pipes and as such, I want to hear how Journey will use them. I'm hoping that it will be mutually beneficial to both the hardcore fans as well as the casual ones.

Yeah, I hear there is this 1 person who has multiple personalities and such but I can assure you that I'm a guy living in San Diego with a beautiful wife who is happy that Journey has found a legacy voice from a place my family calls home.

When JSS was singing for Journey, JSS just did what SP had already done with Journey correct? If so, the difference now is that AP/Journey are going to be doing some material that no one's heard SP sing or Journey play before. That in itself is an attraction.

The real question remains however, will this new material be a huge success, run of the mill or failure?

Not really. I was more intrigued by JSS having a unique and different vocal timbre and style than Perry. He brought something new to the table. All 3 of my favorite vocalists have very unique and different vocal tones/timbres from each other and that is what intrigues me. The only thing they share is that they all emote the hell out of a song and have great delivery. All 3 of them can throw down a motown sound like nobody's business. :D Sorry, but I am actually turned off by just how much AP sounds like Perry, minus Perry's unique passionate delivery.....it falls flat for me. Who knows, maybe I'll be blown away on new material. But unless he changes it up quite a bit vocally, I just can't see it happening for me. A lot of it rides on the tone/timbre of the vocals and the delivery, and I usually know instantly whether I really dig the vocals or not.

Journey haven't been much for playing their new music. remember the first show for the anniversary tour, 8 new songs played and they dropped em like a hot potato. i think 2 were played by the end of the tour. all hail the dirty dozen.

as for the attraction of new material, don't be too sure. the hard core fans want new material but the general ticket buying public are wanting those Perry fronted hit songs.

Actually that's the sad thing about this entire situation; Arnel might be stuck in singing those songs as long as he is fronting the band and he has the ability to sing them. I'm hoping he will be able to sneak in some new ones as well; if he has the voice and the presence and the charisma; he might be able to fool people into thinking they are ole ones that ESpee didn't sing.

Problem is, like Lula pointed out. Hardcore fans want new music and the general fan wants the dirty dozen. General fan will be beer run and a corndog or piss break every time they whip out one of the new "gems".
