With all this negative Arnel talk..

Lets focus on what really counts, and that's this mans raw talent. His voice.

I'm eager for the first show with this guy leading. Can't wait.

Agreed, Arnel has an excellent voice. His singing and boyish looks can pass for half his age (is he really 40 yrs old?). But what does Neal/Jon hope to accomplish, hiring someone that sings those songs just like SP used to do. This is just too eerie. It is not 1980, they are not in their 20's-30's. Grow up, you guys! Didn't Neal say he nearly freaked out when he heard Hugo sing. Isn't this the same thing? I say bring back SA and make another Arrival. Leave us fans with our Perry song memories, please!

I have been converted. No, not going to polish Jon and Neals knobs, NOT cheerleading or praising at every turn. No one can deny this guy can't sing.

Annie, sadly, Steve Augeri I fear won't make it back to this level, not in my opinion.

I bet all those Arnel fans here are glad you converted. Perhaps quite a few more will follow your steps.

I read somewhere from this site that their agreement with SP had finished, therefore, they can re-record those old Journey songs but give it the Arnels raspy voice twist. I must admit only 3 songs of Journey really hit me big:

Faithfully
Don't stop believing
Open Arms

Also, if you go to the caveman and official Journey site, they did mention recording new songs. Can't wait to hear them all. This one can definitely have Arnel's own style - nothing to parrot about.

Actually, there is more positive here than negative...far more. I think the cheerleaders have been very vocal. Time to sit back and just see what comes next.... ie. The album and tour.

there is far more positive than negative on here as of late, I feel like there are people here (including me) that are not completely sold on Arnel.

He has a killer voice from all evidence I have seen and I have read raves from Kevin Shirley.

Waiting on the new material and the concert reviews here, I hope it is a solid Journey recording and great reviews... I wish Arnel all the best.

The arnel knocks are based on seeing him in another situation and racism. Sorry, but it's the truth. His other band situation... well, they stink. The guy's a great singer. He will do fine as long as he doesn't wreck his voice with Journey's non-stop touring. They need to be cognizant of that. His pronunciation can be fixed. They do it all the time for singers from other countries or others with thick dialects (Jersey, New Yawk, Bahston, etc.). If the guy wants the gig, he'll do what it takes. As far as talking on stage, I wouldn't be surprised if Neal and Jon did most of the talking. Rick Nielsen does it for Cheap Trick, Journey could do the same thing and not have the singer talk much. Having the singer talk at the crowd is not the end all be all. I think, since it's Neal's band, that he should be the one to communicate to the audience. Jon's too friggin' long winded, but it would establish to the audience that Neal's the leader of the band. I could care less if Arnel talks to the crowd. As long as he can sing the tunes (and he can) it's fine.

He's a little flat on the high notes in the chorus.

My concern is this. He can sing these songs, yes, with his little bar band in the Phillippines, one night a week, etc. Great. Good for him, he sounds like a million bucks.

Can he do it full time? Can he do it after getting off an airplane, after being in a bus for 6 hours, for the third night in a row, with a cold, with nothing but assholes behind him pushing him harder?

Steve Augeri couldn't. Jeff Scott Soto could be JSS can do anything. And let's not forget the culture shock this poor bastard has already gotta be going thru.

I don't believe for a second that this is gonna work. For Arnel, I hope it does, seems like a nice kid. For the assholes whose pockets his hard work and sacrifice will line, I hope it doesn't.

He's not doing a perfect job on these clips, and these are under NO pressure. You guys tell me...what's gonna happen when the pressure hits bigtime? What's gonna happen in Indianapolis the night after Chicago two nights after Denver on his 10th show in 14 days?

This 'kid' as you put it (he's 40) has been performing 3 to 4 hour shows several times a week for years. In a recent interview at http://www.marinij.com/lifestyles/ci_7826224 Arnel said he was fighting against a cold and very little sleep whilst laying down vocals with Journey. He also states his singing voice was not affected.

I am positive he will do just fine.

You've got a point, some food for thought. Time will tell I guess.
There is no denying that AP has a great voice. But for me, it's just missing the emotion/passion for it to be a favorite. There just isn't that excitement anymore for me that ya get when you're going to see a show of your favorite band. I hope he does very well and I'm sure he probably will, if he isn't pushed too hard like past Journey frontmen.

...10th show in 14 days

Try 10 shows in 10 days for 3-4 hours at a time for the last 3 years. If he is doing it now, what makes it so hard to do it later?
Some people have said horseshit, dust, mold, and flies. I've already proven that the PI can, at times, have things that are much more of threat...think noxious, to him and he perseveres and comes through with voice just killin' it.

NO polyps have developed in his 25 years performing and if you just listen, you hear nothing but clean and melodious sound ...except for the bouts of taglish, while that's ok with me...it probably won't fly to well in America, except for those of us who hear taglish every day. But that's why he has an accent reduction coach right?

So again, let's put to rest this...it's going to be tough to do multiple shows argument. The guy has performed more times and at a ratio higher than the typical legit performer.

A mix of Tagalog and English. The same way as Spanglish is done with Spanish and English. Tagalog is the official language of the Phillipines I guess...

Deb, not a dumb question at all. :D

I referenced in another thread that people clowned Arnel because of the way that he was talking. I argued the following point. Since he is playing at a club in Manila, then he is speaking both Tagalog(The National Language of The Philippines) and English.
Sometimes he'll combine words from one with the other. So in essence, this mashup is taglish.

On 1 of the videos, he plainly says," Don't worry, nang approve noong visa ko." Which translates out to,"Don't worry, my visa has been approved."

Some latin performers do the same thing, except it's Spanish and English, hence the term,"spanglish". They all know they have an audience to perform to and if they are multi-lingual, they play up to those strengths.

Not true. I love JSS. So much I flew out to CA and saw two of his shows and would do it again if I could. I've also heard Arnel and think he's got a great voice. I just haven't been shoving him down people's throats because there are some who don't care for him. Fine, that's their choice. Whether he's the right choice for Journey remains to be seen.
