My recollection is they didn't have a record contract at the time Jeff joined up and that they only attracted label attention in response to the positive reviews from fans and critics of Jeff's performances during that double ticket tour with Def Leppard. Neal was quoted as saying Azoff was excited and told them they need to get this lineup into a studio (or something to that effect).

I too was wondering/worried that a Jeff fronted Journey would be Soul Sirkus with keyboards. I didn't dig Soul Sirkus at all. Then I heard Winds of Freedom and I really felt Jeff's delivery. He really emoted those crappy lyrics. It would have been a true change in their sound for the better (as compared to the Augeri years). The band would have finally moved on from sounding like Perry's station wagon. The analogy I give is sort of like how Van Halen sounded different but the same with Hagar on vocals after Roth's departure. I really think Jeff in Journey could have had that same result (maybe not monetarily, but creatively).

Honestly, I don't think Neal and Jon have the stones to attempt to move on from what they were with Perry. They believe Perry was the successful ingredient and they just want to replicate it as close as possible.

Winds of Freedom was an embarrasment and didn't bode at all well for the future if this was to be a new direction. To be fair even Perry himslef coudn't have polished that turd!

Well, I didn't say it was a good song. I said Jeff sang it with heart and I liked his vocal on it. I thought the melody was decent, but the lyrics fried any chance of it turning into something worth listening to. Still, if you listen to what Jeff did with Cain's melody, it should give you a glimpse of what might have been. That's what I was referring to with that example.

I really like Jeff's work but I just wasn't feeling it with Journey, even live. Great singer, great performer - onward and upward!

I can usually tell right away whether certain vocal tones are going to get under my skin and stick with me. 1) it has never been about range, even with Perry......personally it's not a big issue how high or low someone can sing. It's more about a particular tone/timbre and the delivery. 2) Sounding just like Perry on the old Perry stuff is actually what turns me off, there is nothing unique there and doesn't intrigue me. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a great singer, just doesn't WOW me like the other 3. And 3) Same arguement could have been said about SP. That "Anyone into SP is not going to give JSS a shot period". Doesn't fly with me, I'm a major Perry fan and JSS is right up their in my top 3 vocalists now, so obviously there was something vocally unique and soulful enough to be there. :D

So very well said and I agree on all points, especially about not caring how high or low someone can sing. I think Arnel is great but there is absolutely no wow-factor for me there. I love it that you are an Eric Martin fan now, too. Talk about an underrated singer.

I fail to see what's so special about Eric Martin,he's good, but I'll take Steve Perry,Jeff Scott Soto,Lou Gramm and Joey Tempest over him without thinking twice!

P.S. Add Arnel to that list..

And that's fine, cuz I'd take Eric Martin's vocals over Arnel's without thinking twice.........so it all evens out.

I'm with the big guy on this one. Eric Martin's voice is nothing next to Arnel's based on prior recordings. Whilst I do like Eric Martin's vocals nothing really stands out for me and I am hard pushed to remember the sound of his voice when not listening to something he has done. He also looks weird. No one his age should look that boyish!

Speaking of stellar vocalists i'm currently listening to Jorn Lande - that dude totally sounds like David Coverdale!

Tonight I heard the greatest vocal of my lifetime.

Leanne Rymes singing Unchained Melody, at 15 yrs old.

The hair on my balls stood up.

I prefer EM's vocals, they have a more smoky, soulful rock tone to them. To each his own. Both AP and EM look very young for their age. EM is a nice looking guy. :)

I love clean shaven balls. I got so into it, I bought some Nair, lied to the clerk about how it was for the old lady, went home and smeared that shit all over my nuts, asshole region, upper thighs, you name it, my cock territory, everywhere. I sit back naked as a fuckin donkey, and start watching the tube. The instructions said to leave on for I think 8 minutes. Well, I figure the longer I leave this stuff on, the more hair will go bye bye, right? Wrong. About 15 minutes I feel this inferno burning in my asshole, and my cock starts crying out for a nearby lake to dunk it into. I was in trouble. I never read the part where it said to "keep away from orifices." No kidding. I ran into the shower and turned on the cold water and jet streamed myself. Lots of hair came off, in fact all of it did, but once the hair was gone, my area was red from skin burn. Looked like a red lobster overcooked in a microwave. It hurt so bad to move, it took me 30 mins to get from the shower to the sofa, nude, because clothes would hurt too much, and drain the lotion bottle all over myself. I literally laid in Jergens for the weekend. No, I was not able to have sex. One of the dumbest assed moves I have ever made. Couldn't even jack off, the pain was akin to OJ slicing the head off my penis.
