DEF LEPPARD, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON First North American Dates

DEF LEPPARD, STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON will team up for a North American tour in March/April. The first eight shows to be announced are as follows:

Mar. 27 - Greensboro, NC - Greensboro Coliseum
Mar. 30 - Estero, FL - Germain Arena
Apr. 03 - Reading, PA - Sovereign Arena
Apr. 08 - Uncasville, CT - Mohegan Sun
Apr. 11 - Quebec, QC - Colisee Pepsi Arena
Apr. 16 - Winnipeg, MB - MTS Centre
Apr. 18 - Grand Rapids, MI - Van Andel Arena
Apr. 19 - Detroit, MI - Joe Louis Arena

The trek will consist of around 20 dates.

The rest of the shows will be officially announced on Monday, January 7.

DEF LEPPARD's upcoming record will be called "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge", but no release date has been set for it. It will be their first album since last year's "Yeah!", which was a collection of covers of songs by artists who had influenced the band. Their most recent studio album of original material was 2002's "X".

Sparkle Lounge? Why not the Starlight Room, or the Pacific Lookout? Jesus are Def Lippard ever the most embarrassing nine armed band alive. Look, I doubt and will wager, they don't fill these hockey arenas. No way can Lippard, KC and the Wagoneers, and Twigs sell arenas.

So that leaves Journey alone to snag Heart. That's my guess.

Well, I'm always torn when it comes to Styx. Glad to see 'em out there but ...

I saw Styx for the first time in a few years back in October in one of their few solo shows with no other acts. Same basic setlist as always. I'm good for a few more years unless something radical happens.

I've never really liked REO live, and they get worse every time. If they never played with Styx, the only time I would have seen them was back in the early 90s. Kevin Cronin is grating live. I can't even imagine sitting through Def Leppard.

Styx/REO/Journey was OK since 2 out of 3 wasn't bad and they all got decent playing time.

What I think will be interesting is to see how the slots go. We know Def is the headliner. But what's the order for the other two and how long do they get to play? Assuming that Def Leppard gets 90 minutes (so, let's assume they come onstage at 9:15PM), you'd have to start the show at 7PM to give both other bands at least 45 minutes.

As for Journey, it will be interesting to see what venues they get with Arnel. I would think that some of the names kicked around here like Foreigner would be somewhat complimentary. Although I'd sooner see Journey do smaller indoor theaters like they did in 98 and build it up again.

Yeah!! With JSS they could've dropped all the ballad nonsense, put Cain on rhythm guitar, pumped out their hard-rocking anthems, and could've hung with most hard rock bands. With a setlist of stuff like Edge of the Blade, Chain Reaction, Message of Love, One More, Wheel in the Sky, Any Way You Want It, Escape, Can't Tame The Lion, Higher Place, Faith in the Heartland.... they could definitely share the stage with a lot of harder bands...

Like her or not, she would probably help the draw. And, she could influence the tour to not get branded as 'dinosaurs'. I mean, having the other bands mentioned so far would be okay for all of us 40 & 50 yr olds, but it wouldn't do much for today's kids. I think she'd bring curiosity and sex appeal to the show. Neal could even go out early and do a little retro blues jam with her as a segue to Journey.

Maybe put Joss Stone on the bill too.

I'm not denying Winehouse's talent at all, and of course she's outrageously popular... and her studio material is good.

HOWEVER, she has a horrible habit of showing up to shows an hour late, slurring her words and falling off the stage, in a drunken mess. I've heard reports of her cussing out her fans and generally putting on HORRIBLE shows multiple times. I wouldn't wish an Amy Winehouse tour disaster on any Journey fan, for the world.

Joss Stone could be good. Actually, if they'd go the route of having a talented female with soul and sex appeal, why not nab Alexa Ray Joel? She's fine as hell and can play rather well.

For the record, I was speaking about in terms of a "show." Musically and artistically I'd prefer Journey, of course, but there's no denying that JSSB wouldn't just own my balls, but rip them off and slingshot 'em over the hills.
