Gregg Rolie vs. Jonathan Cain in a KEY-OFF

Postby ProgRocker53 » Sun Jan 06, 2008 4:07 am

Rolie behind a Hammond B3 and Moog setup, Cain behind the Whale and a synthesizer!

Dueling it up in a showcase of passionate and technical keyboarding ability!

Special guest referee, Rick Wakeman!

Who wins this throwdown?

No contest! Greg Rollie all the way.

I believe it was Red13JoePa who said something about how Gregg could play an organ solo with no hands and then pole-vault from behind the rig and take a bow?

Friga on pop piano and Rolie on rock.

Bruce Hornsby owns both of them.

2 completely different styles. Gregg has a more soulful, beat driven style while Cain has a "poppier" commercial flair that really goes well with Top 40 type music.

I'm picturing an MTV Celebrity Deathmatch.

Cain's swingin a Keytar with all he's got, knocks Rolie to the mat. Throws the whale on him.

Just when he thinks he's won, Cain trips on his scarf, Rolie crawls out from under the whale. "You forgot I've got a Latin groove Friga!"

Rolie grabs cornerman Carlos' guitar and whop, there goes Cain's head.

A Soul Sacrifice for the Black Magic Woman.

Rolie wins.

I agree with you, but that involves songwriting, I vote for Cain also in the songwriter department. But Rollie is mucher better on the keys.

Gregg Rolie cut his teeth in SANTANA before JOURNEY, while Jonathan Cain was with THE BABYS. No contest Gregg Rolie wins hands down (no pun intended)

Didn't Luke describe Paich as a "fat douche" after the issues regarding the use of "Rosanna" in the insurance commercial?

I think Rolie has a slight edge here, but I'm curious if the rest of you are basing this off of Cain's reputed status as an asshole rather than his talent.

Though, as far as songwriting is concerned, Rolie isn't polished enough to shine Cain's shoes. You ever hear the lyrics produced by the Storm? Absolute shit. We know why Perry and Schon did the majority of the writing for Rolie's involvement.

My choice is Rollie and it's based solely on my opinion of their keyboard ability and talent. I'm not even including songwriting. Cain definitely is the better writer, but the poll is for "keyboardist".

True.

Though, one of my biggest complaints is that Rolie kind've "sold out" and went the commercial route for the Storm.

That's a tough one to call. If Rolie hadn't sold out, we would never have known the Journey music we have today, because of the magic of schon/cain/perry. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

No, I meant he completely changed his style when he joined the Storm.

I bet the proposed idea of Rolie joining Cain and Schon in Journey would have been phenomenal.

Cain's ego would never have let that happen. Sorry, that's my opinion. But.......it WOULD have been good.

Rolie and Cain are both good players but neither of them approaches the greatness of Wakeman. Keith Emerson is just as good, and possibly better, than Wakeman.

I don't think he sold out at all. He's always been doing what he wanted to. He left Journey at the height of success to that point. What most would've called career suicide. He didn't want to play the game anymore.

Solo work ensues and ten years later, he engineers The Storm. To me this was brilliant since Journey was AWOL. Nothing wrong with taking advantage of an opportunity. He did all of it on his own terms and we're the better for it.

Perry goes back for TBF and Rolie continues his own way. I have complete respect for Rolie and his choices.

Cain is absolutely amazing, don't get me wrong - but Gregg's got the funk. Therefore, he gets my vote. (Besides, growing up with early Santana records being played embeds Rolie keyboarding into an impressionable child's mind).
