Dokken ripped off Journey!

Sorry Rip couldn't resist! :D If it's any consolation it appears that Judas Priest also ripped them off - skip to 2 minutes & 12 seconds...

Rush ripped off Journey. Listen to Nickel and Dime.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I would but I can't listen to Geddy Lee's voice - doctor's orders. Besides it would cause unrest with neighbourhood cats!

That's a cool video! : D At least Dokken has good taste!

I still say that the guitar riff at the end of "Strung Out" by Steve Perry sounds very much like "Hammer to Fall" by Queen, but these were amazing.

Here's I am! :P That was funny... and as SOON as they started playing "Round And Round" by RATT, I KNEW "All She Wrote" by Firehouse must be the follow-up. I haven't heard many people make that comparison, but when I first heard that Firehouse tune I thought immediately of "Round and Round".

As Larry mentioned, though, Dokken didn't rip off Journey... They ripped off Priest, who themselves had ripped off Journey. :P

Most of those are tunes that just happen to sound similar. It's bound to happen as much music as there is out there.

I'm no music theorist, but there are certain chord progressions that we "expect" when we listen to music. Almost like we "know" what should come next and if it doesn't the music sounds dissonant to us.

I've read a few books on the subject, but I'll stop before I start sounding like a pseudo-professor! :D

I agree, though I'm sure there are plenty of true rip-offs out there. Probably none of those, though. I tell ya what happens to me, sometimes, is that I'll start writing a song I really like, only to figure out later that I subconsciously snagged the riff from hearing another song, and I end up having to modify it.

I have discovered a very cool way to come up with new ideas for songs, though, and it works like a charm to kick in the imagination...

Careful - John Fogerty got sued for ripping himself off! Man, would I have killed to be a juror at that trial.......

Oh, yeah... I remember that! Speaking of artists ripping themselves off, I have a new one I discovered the other day. Was finally listening to Soul Sirkus for the first time, and noticed in one of the slower songs (maybe around track 5-6), Neal's lead was virtually identical to one from the Journey song "Trial By Fire". Any hardcore Soul Sirkus fans here should know immediately what I'm talking about.

Didn't the book with Time3 mention something about a Kansas song, too? It's late, I've had my Ambien, so I'm not 100% about it... Hope someone can help a sleepy one out. ;)

Here's a RipOff for ya...

Go listen to the Black N Blue song called Nasty Nasty, and then go listen to the Kiss song Domino. Keep in mind that Nasty Nasty came out in 86-87 and Domino came out in 1992, AND that Gene Simmons also produced Black N Blue back in the day

Prince

Postby CatEyes » Wed Jan 16, 2008 12:18 pm

Ok my memory is avoiding details right now ..... however, Prince stole one of Neal's solos - almost note for note.

It was one of those awesome outro solo's.

Anyway, Prince played it in one of his songs that would go on to be a hit.

At the last minute, he realized what had happened.

He called friga and fro and management and apologized and admitted to being a fan and accidentally stealing the piece.

Journey told him that it was cool - no lawsuits - just a good story for everyone involved.
