I think Arnel, will come to his own, meaning OWN voice for the songs (that to the new Journey tunes). With regards to Arnel getting screwed over, I think he's simply on contract. I feel he's thinking to take the chance he's got now and see how it goes. Nothing lasts forever anyway.

Yep, ride the wave while it's there.

I was pissed when I found out they weren't hiring Jeremey and getting Arnel, but after the anger has faded, I'm really starting to like the guy. He's damn sure a vocal chameleon. Very talented. We'll see how he fairs out on the road. Should be interesting.

What I find most novel, is that Journey peforming in Chile would be a GREAT place for Arnel to sink his teeth in. Heck, I think some fans there might think he's Chilean. 8)

Not sure if you guys are picking up on this fact but Arnel's highly regarded as a super star back in the Philippines now. Which means either way (Journey using him for a long or short time) the point is, Arnel's set now and whatever he'll be doing from here on out in the Philippines and Asia in general, he'll be doing it as a super star there. So long or short, he'll ride that wave with Journey and then go on to other things.

Either way, not too many people can say they've been the lead singer of Journey. I'd sure love to have those bragging rights regardless. And again, Arnel's now regarded in the Philippines and much of Asia as a super star. Notice the chick who was reporting on the story was using the word "American" in her dialog? That's because American entertainment whether it be movies or music goes a long long way over there.

I don't know about that, there seem to be quite a few...and growing. Won't be long before everyone can say they have been the lead singer of Journey.

At this point, I don't know that I'd call Journey's entertainment at this stage American. They are playing two dates in Chili and a company party in Vegas.

Well, actually Flip Wilson probably wasn't a pretty popular American entertainer over there, at least the name shouldn't have been. As very young kids we'd watch that show with our parents, along with the Sonny & Cher show.

Maybe the part you didn't understand was the part where he speaks in his native language. He sure got a heavy accent but I completely understand all that he is saying.
Are there anyone here besides stevew2 that doesnt understand AP? just curious :D

Yeah, the accent is pretty thick, more noticeable than previously on youtube. They must know that this will not go over well with the American audience. And this, coming from a fellow Asian. I have great empathy for him, hope he won't get ridiculed or laughed at when they're out in the spotlight.

What can Neal and Jon be thinking of? Don't talk, just sing?

I really don't think it's going to be a big deal. The only people who it will matter to are the ones who are looking for anything they possibly can to point out a discrepancy or flaw, in which case if it wasn't his accent it would be something else to them.

Back when I was a youngster in the Philippines for the first time, I was completely in love with Sharon Cuneta. She was like my first idol while I was over there. Plus it didn't help that I was going through a phase where I was attracted to older women, and Cuneta is some years older then I am.

She's got a very strong Filipina accent when she talks, but when she sings you can't tell as the example below demonstrates.

I think thats what Neal and Friga wanted anyway. I saw Friga annoyed when Steve A was talking to the fans at a New Jersey concert, there is an ego thing with the pair

I think accents make no difference really ( I am NOT going to bat for Arnel in Journey But Arnel personally here).....Look at Ozzy, you cant understand a damn word he says most of the time, but i can understand him perfectly when he sings.

Not me. Of course I don't understand tagalog, but I understand him perfectly when he speaks English. The accent is definitely there, but not enough to strain to hear what he's saying.

Accent won't matter on stage patter (you will see Neal and Jonathan moreso step up to the mic, I believe) aside from a few thank yous, etc...The singing will be what people are looking for, and if he's able to pickup the stage show a bit while taming the singing accent a bit, he'll do fine!

A little off topic here, but for those who have been mentioning accents - a lot of talk about French accents, british accents, etc....I do think, however, that to a "western" audience, an "eastern" accent such as an asian accent or indian accent is more noticeable and perhaps a little more hard to accept than a "western" accent (british, french, etc) to a western audience. That being said, as I mentioned, Jon and Neal will likely step up a bit more introducing songs, is my guess.

That's cause Ozzy has been on tape save for the Sabbath gigs for about 20 years.

Arnel's easier to understand than Klaus Meine. He'll be okay.

BTW Jeremey - beautiful kid. I wouldn't leave that for this gig either.

The accent won't be a big deal here in my area - it's a diverse section of the state/country and I work with/know/am friends with lots of folks who are from the Philippines. Accents are everywhere: hispanic, tagalog, chinese, japanese, farsi....

If Arnel comes out and blows away the crowd with the first note, they won't care if he speaks Aramaic, at least not around here.
