DOKK ON, DUDE!!! This album is a little more polished than "Tooth And Nail", and has several hit singles on it. "Tooth And Nail" was heavier, and not single oriented. Hope you enjoy, but let me know what ye think.

The first great Dokken record, in my opinion. The songs may have actually been better on the previous album, "Tooth and Nail", but Don Dokken's singing was just dry and emotionless on that album, in my opinion. He improved drastically on ULAK. I like all the songs to some degree but the weakest track is probably "Don't Lie to Me". My favorites are "Unchain the Night", "The Hunter", and "Jaded Heart". Of course, George Lynch's playing throughout the album is excellent, mixing in shreadding AND enough melodic leads to break up the monotony.

Enough with all the Dokken crap. Andrew could you start a "Dokken and other crappy bands nobody cares about" Forum? Thanks! :D

They sold millions of records with "Tooth and Nail", "Under Lock and Key", and "Back for the Attack" WITHOUT a major hit single, though I think they did have a track or two on the Top 40. That being said, that's more of a testament to their ability to hit it big without cracking the top 10.

First Impression:

This album was "good," it had a few shining moments and solid tracks for sure. However, a couple songs were just boring and the "feel" of the album was very monotonous and repetitive. Some great vocals and guitars for sure, ESPECIALLY the guitars, but the actual songs aren't overly remarkable.

I'll give it a few more shakes this weekend, probably. I'll give "Under Lock and Key" a 6/10 on the first impression, it may be a grower though. I'll also check out "Tooth and Nail" soon though, it seems more up my alley from what I've read!

If it means anything, Dokken had a better first impression on me than most of the other bands that peaked in the late 80s/early 90s. Far better first impression than Whitesnake, Warrant, Bon Jovi, and others.. but not as good of a first impression as Queensryche, Def Leppard and Winger.

You might give "Back for the Attack" a try before TAN. It's the heaviest album, in my opinion, and better all the way around.

You just HAVE to click on any topics that you KNOW is about Dokken, don't you?
 :D Sounds to me like someone is getting "Dokkenized" without even knowing one single song (or caring about a single song for that matter).

ProgRokken53 is in the process of being Dokkenized as we speak. :P I warned everyone that attempting to put the beatdown on Don was like trying to put out a grease fire by pouring water on it, and now one by one, they are being assimilated into the Dokken Collective... :P

I was just jamming on that song yesterday, singing it at the top of my lungs in the car! Outstanding song, as Don takes on the cults! That would be a great song to use against Tom Cruise.

Hey, glad you liked it! Actually, I believe your first impression was the same as mine when I first got it. I have a vague recollection of being mildly disappointed at first, or at least, not stunned, but that often happens when you build up a certain expectation. I'd also been reading interviews about it at the time, where Don mentioned his voice had roughened up a bit and he hoped the fans liked that, and how they recorded the drums in an airplane hangar to give them a real big sound. Didn't take long before it was one of my favorite rock albums of that era. Anyway, hope it grows on ya! Dave's right -- try "Back For The Attack" (you should dig Lynch's solo "Mr. Scary"). Keep on Dokkin', too, because there are a ton of great Dokken albums out there. If you like Winger, then you should like "Erase The Slate", which had Winger's Reb Beach on guitar.

Reb Beach is incredible, I'm bound to like anything he does.

There's always hope for Dokken. I hated Rush for years, tolerated them for two years, liked them for a year or so.... and now I'm the proud owner of all of their CDs, 3 DVDs, and have been to two shows.... and can call them my favorite band. :D

I remember the video for "Mirror, Mirror"...I also remember thinking "What a dull song." Is the rest of the album that good?

Also, why is there no live Dokken DVD? I don't mean that thing with the videos they just put out.

I'm surprised that From Conception: Live 1981 has not been brought up. That's turned out to be my single favorite Dokken CD. I love the pre-BtC songs, especially "Nightrider." The band sounded nice and raw and Don has a unique voice. Not as powerful as many other singers, but definitely unique. You hear him, you know it's Don. The Bremen Beat Club footage from '81 on Youtube is awesome.

On CDUniverse, one guy left an interesting review for, I believe, TaN (or maybe it's BtC). Apparently the guy had known Don back in the day and heard all the songs for the album before Don went to Germany for a bunch of live dates circa '81 or '82. The songs were also recorded in a studio there. The final versions were apparently not as striking and the guy made a point to stress how underwhelming those "new" versions were compared to the roughs.

And all you have to do is watch the Live In Japan DVD to know that George Lynch is a killer guitar player.

Wait, I thought you asked why there were no live Dokken DVDs, and then you just mentioned one... haha! Maybe I misunderstood? There are actually at least two more -- "One Live Night" and "Live From The Sun". I only have the latter which came as a bonus disc with my CD of the same title.

Hmm.. You know, I don't know about the "dull" part. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I don't have "Live From Conception" let, but maybe should check it out. I love Don's solo disc, and listened to it all the way thru twice during my travels over the weekend. Not a weak song on the album, and IMO, no filler. If you are referring to it as dull as in not having enough raw energy, or that it's too polished, man, I don't know. Or maybe it's Don's mellower vocal style (one of the things I actually love)? It's the killer guitar work by John Norum and the melodies that I enjoy. Anyway, I'll have to check out that review you mentioned -- was it on Amazon?

Hey, I dig that Quint reference in your signature, btw! :P

I like the guitar hook in Mirror Mirror. Other than that it can get a bit repetative.

"Stay" on the Up from the Ashes album is easily my favorite from the album. At the same time "Crash & Burn", "Living a Lie", "Give It Up" and "Forever" are not to be missed. I guess the whole album is just great overall!

When I first heard the guitar hook for "Mirror Mirror", I thought he was obviously trying to go for Lynch's sound on "It's Not Love" -- those little two string finger plucks (I do these with my middle and ring fingers). I was just playing that riff the other day, matter o' fact.

Hey, you forgot "1,000 Miles Away" -- another killer song, with a chord progression similar to "In My Dreams". I also like "Down In Flames", and of course, the ballad, "When Love Finds A Fool"... it's just a kick-A album.

Here's the video for "Stay"... http://youtube.com/watch?v=kRMm6bY6Jks

Check out John Norum's mouth at exactly 1:52 thru 1:53 -- doesn't he look like the DVD cover for "Fear Dot Com"? I keep thinking if he opened his clam mouth a bit more, I might find a pearl! :P

Hey ProgRocker - don't lump Whitesnake in with all those muppet bands. Have you heard any of the Whitesnake albums recorded before they went all bouffant in '87?

Yeah, this is what is tricky about the 70's and 80's. There were a shit ton of songs that had heavy rotation on AOR stations (groups like DOKKEN) that never cracked Billboard. Hell, when Ripper said TOOTH AND NAIL wasn't "hit orriented", I took a step back. ALONE AGAIN used to get played every ten minutes when I was a kid, and INTO THE FIRE and JUST GOT LUCKY got hevy rotation as well...

...but that was back when Radio didn't completly suck corporate ass....
