This album was "good," it had a few shining moments and solid tracks for sure. However, a couple songs were just boring and the "feel" of the album was very monotonous and repetitive. Some great vocals and guitars for sure, ESPECIALLY the guitars, but the actual songs aren't overly remarkable.
I'll give it a few more shakes this weekend, probably. I'll give "Under Lock and Key" a 6/10 on the first impression, it may be a grower though. I'll also check out "Tooth and Nail" soon though, it seems more up my alley from what I've read!
If it means anything, Dokken had a better first impression on me than most of the other bands that peaked in the late 80s/early 90s. Far better first impression than Whitesnake, Warrant, Bon Jovi, and others.. but not as good of a first impression as Queensryche, Def Leppard and Winger.

I agree with RWF, get Dokken the fuck off this forum, they suck.

Sounds to me like someone is getting "Dokkenized" without even knowing one single song (or caring about a single song for that matter).

ProgRokken53 is in the process of being Dokkenized as we speak.I warned everyone that attempting to put the beatdown on Don was like trying to put out a grease fire by pouring water on it, and now one by one, they are being assimilated into the Dokken Collective...

I am listening to "Crash and Burn" right now.
Prog, welcome to Dokkenworld

Hey, glad you liked it! Actually, I believe your first impression was the same as mine when I first got it. I have a vague recollection of being mildly disappointed at first, or at least, not stunned, but that often happens when you build up a certain expectation. I'd also been reading interviews about it at the time, where Don mentioned his voice had roughened up a bit and he hoped the fans liked that, and how they recorded the drums in an airplane hangar to give them a real big sound. Didn't take long before it was one of my favorite rock albums of that era. Anyway, hope it grows on ya! Dave's right -- try "Back For The Attack" (you should dig Lynch's solo "Mr. Scary"). Keep on Dokkin', too, because there are a ton of great Dokken albums out there. If you like Winger, then you should like "Erase The Slate", which had Winger's Reb Beach on guitar.

Also, why is there no live Dokken DVD? I don't mean that thing with the videos they just put out.
I'm surprised that From Conception: Live 1981 has not been brought up. That's turned out to be my single favorite Dokken CD. I love the pre-BtC songs, especially "Nightrider." The band sounded nice and raw and Don has a unique voice. Not as powerful as many other singers, but definitely unique. You hear him, you know it's Don. The Bremen Beat Club footage from '81 on Youtube is awesome.
On CDUniverse, one guy left an interesting review for, I believe, TaN (or maybe it's BtC). Apparently the guy had known Don back in the day and heard all the songs for the album before Don went to Germany for a bunch of live dates circa '81 or '82. The songs were also recorded in a studio there. The final versions were apparently not as striking and the guy made a point to stress how underwhelming those "new" versions were compared to the roughs.
And all you have to do is watch the Live In Japan DVD to know that George Lynch is a killer guitar player.

"Stay" on the Up from the Ashes album is easily my favorite from the album. At the same time "Crash & Burn", "Living a Lie", "Give It Up" and "Forever" are not to be missed. I guess the whole album is just great overall!

"The Hunter", "It's Not Love", "In My Dreams" -- all had heavy play on MTV and radio.
