OT: Tom Brady

Gerry Callahan, Boston Herald, on the AFC title game: “This is such a lopsided matchup that Tom Brady is thinking of spending a couple of days in Mexico with Jessica Simpson, just to make it fair.

He could spend that week in Mexico with O.J. Simpson and it wouldn't matter.

I think I seem to be the only New England fan who doesn't view this game as a "lopsided matchup". Listen, I thought the Chargers were a fraud team, until I watched them dismantle the Colts. The reality is that they're 12-2 in their last 14 games, only giving up 13 points a game, and caused FORTY EIGHT turnovers. Those are VERY impressive numbers! I think the Patriots still have the better offense, so I think they'll win the game. That said, if you're betting your money, take the Chargers and the 14 points, because the Patriots aren't covering in this one!

The Cowboy's QB is dating Jessica Simpson, right? My husband is a life long Charger fan, but we don't hold much hope that they can beat the Patriots. We didn't think they'd beat the Colts either, but they came to play last week! :D

I realize the rest of the nation doesn't read the San Diego Tribune but well:
Tomlinson said he went through a normal Thursday practice and said his knee was “just fine.”

“I tested it,” Tomlinson said. “I wanted to see where I was. I was happy at where I was today.”

“LT looked good,” said Turner.

Dude or Dudette...

You need to brush up on your football knowledge! You say the Chargers "run better than New England" and that's a fact! What the hell does that have to do with anything? There isn't a person who has ever watched a football game who doesn't know that the Chargers have a far better running game than New England! The Chargers also had the superior running game in September when they got pasted by New England 38-14. Tomlinson finished the game with 43 yards and wasn't a factor, with two healthy knees! What you forgot to mention is that the Patriots have the MOST prolific passing offense, EVER, in the history of the NFL! You also forgot to mention that the Chargers have Phillip Rivers (you guys should be hoping for Billy Volek to get in there) and the Patriots have Tom Brady! One guy is on the way to the hall of fame, and the next guy is on his way to being the next Ryan Leaf! One other thing...You have Norv Turner, and New England has Bill Bellichick! The Chargers running game will only be a factor if the Chargers get ahead in this game and stay ahead. If they're losing by three touchdowns (which I don't think will be the case, but one never knows), the running game will be completely abandoned, and it will be all on Rivers' shoulders to beat the Patriots, and I'm telling you right now that Rivers is NOT capable of beating the Patriots!

One final thing...Tell all your jackass friends in San Diego to stop calling Whiny Tomlinson "the greatest running back ever"! The guy is a VERY good player, but it's fucking absurd to call this guy the greatest ever, because he's not even close to that status, at this point in his career! Tell them to pull out a tape and watch Barry Sanders and then tell me this guy is the greatest ever! For the record, I wouldn't even rank him in the top 5, at this point! He simply hasn't been doing it long enough!

LT is #3 in All-time TD's even more that Walter "Sweetness" Payton. So while you're lauding Tom for banging his latest supermodel/Celebrity Actress in hopes of looking for further impregnation, recognize that this team isn't the same team you saw in WK 2.

Just remember...what happens if the Patsies lose this week. All that path to perfection pressure isn't imagined...it's real. The things you say now are the same things that was said last week against the Colts and 13 years ago against the Steelers.

That team hasn't exactly been blowing out teams by 3 td's of late have they? If it wasn't for Rex Ryan not believing in his Baltimore D, then there'd be a loss and the Patsies could come in playing with less pressure.

The Chargers are more loose than a 3 dollar whore working the pier after the US Navy sailors have come back from a 6 month Westpac tour. That fellow posters...is beyond loose.

A couple of points here, Chris Berman...First and foremost, I could care less where Tomlinson ranks for touchdowns scored (and for the record, the stat you're talking about is rushing touchdowns only). It's a pretty meaningless stat. Barry Sanders never scored many touchdowns because of playing on god-awful teams, and I'll take Sanders over Tomlinson, all day long! Tomlinson doesn't rank in the top 20, in terms of most rushing yards ever. Also, don't base everything on just stats. Trust your eyes, because that will tell you FAR more than any stat will! Dan Marino (ranked 2nd overall) had FAR more passing yards (Marino has 20,000 more yards than Montana)than Joe Montana (ranked 9th overall)...Which guy would you take? I'd take the guy with all the championships, but that's just me! Also, Henry Ellard and Art Monk are both wide receivers who both are ranked in the top 10 all time, and neither guy is in the Hall of Fame, so the stats obviously don't mean as much as you think they do!

As for the game, I've already been on record as saying I don't think the Patriots will blow out the Chargers, this time around. That said, you're delusional if you sincerely believe the Chargers have the better team. The best team doesn't always win in the NFL, so it will come down to who executes the best on Sunday. I still think the Patriots are a TD better than San Diego, and that's assuming San Diego plays their best game of the season!

To get past Walter Payton means that you've accomplished something. It means that you've surpassed greatness in 1 thing that he was really good at. We're talking touchdowns here, not yards received. you say
It's a pretty meaningless stat

The only meaningless stat out there is Youngest to do blah blah blah. I prefer accomplishments in fastest time.

I anticipate 1 hell of a game, and I hope that the Chargers D punishes Brady. I wouldn't take Sanders over LT because he just isn't as complete a package.

We'll see what happens Sunday John...good luck to your team.

Dude...are you fucking nuts??? Sanders wasn't "as complete a package"??? You're either 21 and didn't see Barry Sanders play or simply never paid attention to anyone not wearing a lightning bolt on the side of their helmet! Listen, I'm admittedly a Patriots fan, but have been a pretty passionate football fan, my entire life. I have ZERO allegiance toward Detroit or San Diego, and I honestly don't believe you'd find ANYONE outside of San Diego, who actually saw Sanders play, say Tomlinson is the better back!

For the record, I think Tomlinson is a VERY good player, but I'm tired of hearing assholes like Shottenheimer tell the world that he's the greatest ever, because he simply isn't! For me, Tomlinson isn't even really in the discussion as "the greatest ever", at this point. He may very well enter the discussion when his career is over, but after 7 seasons, he simply isn't there, just because he scores all the touchdowns on a team that never has any receivers! And please don't talk to me about Gates, because the guy is FAR more overrated than Tomlinson is. The guy has exactly ONE season that he has managed to crack 1000 yards receiving, and I'm not as impressed with the guy as everyone else is!

The reason you can't always count on stats as your barometer is that there are some guys who simply have no desire to play forever, and Sanders did what Jim Brown did...he walked away, on top of his game (1500 yards rushing his final season)! The other thing is the teams these guys played on. Go talk to some Lions fans and ask them how putrid some of the teams Sanders played on were! The dude NEVER had ANY offensive line, and still managed to win rushing title, after rushing title! Also, Tomlinson has a GREAT 4.5 yard career average, over a 7 year career (and that includes this season). Barry Sanders career average was 5.0 yards per carry, with ZERO offensive line help, over a 10 year career! The only thing Tomlinson does that Sanders didn't is throw a touchdown once a season, and I could care less about my running back throwing the rock!

I'd love to wish you luck this weekend, but I wouldn't want to lie  Truth be told, I actually hate the Chargers because of how much they run their mouths! They've been doing it for several years now, and it's gotten them nowhere. Hopefully, for the sake of their fans, they'll mature at some point, and shut their pie holes and just play football! Until that time, keep sending us the idiotic comments that guys like Igor Olshansky make! The Boston media loves going to the Patriots and asking them how they feel about a Charger saying the Patriots should be afraid of them! Good luck with your winter vacation plans

Dude I live in San Diego right now. I'm on vacation everytime I step out the door and see the water from the beach and then take a short jog up a hill to see the snow on the mountains.

I'm 40 and I just don't think Barry is as good as LT. It's a difference of opinion and to me, MINE IS MORE IMPORTANT :)

I saw Barry dominate in the Holiday Bowl one year. LT wasn't MVP just because he looked good throwing the half-back option 8)

This is no opinion...Both are great backs but Barry Sanders was the better back, considering the crappy offensive line he played behind. He STILL managed to average 5.0 yards per carry. If he had played behind a line like Emmitt Smith had, for instance, he probably would've pushed 2000 yards every year.

don't underestimate billy volek.when he was in tennessee backing up mcnair there was a time when mcnair was injured and volek threw back to back games of over 400 yards each time.he played pretty good here and i hated losing him to end up with kerry collins.i still say the patriots will destroy the chargers anyway.i'm ready for this matchup......

Tom Brady is best quarterback to EVER play...EVER. And by better, I mean WAAAAYYYYY better than anyone who has ever played. There's no comparison whatsoever and if anyone wants to challenge that, just look at the W-L records. Nevermind the 50 touchdowns this year, which itself is superhuman. Lot's of guys have put up big numbers but Brady's W-L record is untouchable. Now that he has a solid offense around him, I could see them going undefeated for the next several years. God answers to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning isn't fit to carry Brady's jock. By the time he retires in another 8 - 10 years, he will most-certainly have 5 or 6 more rings (he already has 3). No one will ever touch that in any sport.

Brady is the ultimate difference-maker. Pats 50+ Chargers >10

Dude...you need to lay off the crack pipe! I've been a Patriots fan for over 30 years, and that is still one of the more ridiculous posts I've ever read! You're an embarrassment to Patriots fans! If you want to advance your premise of how great Tom Brady is (and I agree that he is certainly in the discussion with the greatest QB's of all time), you need to bring some intelligence to the table. Talking about how Manning can't carry Brady's jock and how God answers to Tom Brady is FUCKING ABSURD!

Yeah, I know. I was exaggerating to make a small point. I agree that Brady is one of the best but, the God comment was a little silly. I also think that the Pats will win fairly convincingly, especially with all of the "bulletin board" material the Chargers have given them this week.

The caveat around Brady being the best ever is in the same vein as Peyton Manning was the best ever a few years ago. Before him, Kurt Warner was the best ever. Before that, Favre and Steve Young. Etc., etc. I call that the "Madden factor". Every year, Madden gets on his high horse and starts christening players in an over-the-top fashion. I remember on one Sunday night game this year, he's going on and on about Brady. He said something like "You know Al, I think it's time that we start talking about Tom Brady as the best football player of all time. Not just quarterback but, he is the best football player that I have ever seen and I can't imagine anyone ever being better than Tom Brady." That's not a direct quote but, it was something like that and he went on and on and on about it. You probably heard the same thing.

The fact is that both Tom Brady and the Patriots are beatable. They just won't be beaten by the Chargers. The Packers have a sporting chance in the Super Bowl but, not the Chargers.

Peace
