Happy MLK day! lol

Postby frfksakes » Tue Jan 22, 2008 6:21 am

Just a few of the endless number of great quotes from the man of the day (hope you don't mind, lol. He's one of my heroes):

"Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think."

"Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal."

"All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem."

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."

"In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

"Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal."

"Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness."

"That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing."

"The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" But... the good Samaritan reversed the question: "If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?""

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

"Means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek." (One for all of the candidates to take to heart in their quests, lol:)

Don't be uncomfortable with this thread. He is what he was.

There's two very different sides to MLK.

As Canseco points out all the time, MLK wasn't the greatest guy to ever live. He had his moments of crime and degrading behaviour. Beating up hookers was undoubtedly true. However, the flip side is he did bring black and white together, PEACEFULLY, unlike that trashy black bastard Malcom X.

Do your own research. You will see the differences.

Maybe I'm just being oversensitive. Just seems to me that we shouldn't be making light of what is an important day of observation for not only the African American community but for everyone living in the United States.

There is no "African-American" community. They're black. Africa is a fucking continent. I don't refer to myself as "European-American" as it would sound fucking ridiculous. I'm simply white.

Well I was born here. So am I "American-American"?

You know what... that's what I'm saying from now on. If there can be Asian-Americans and African-Americans and Mexican-Americans, then I can damn well be American-American. So there.

Mexican Americans? Oh you mean gardners.

Last week, our apartment gardner was done weeding the flower bed and just upped and started taking a piss right there in the garden. WTF!

I feel that if "African American" is what the community wants to be called, it's fine with me. Considering the history of this nation, I think they've earned the right to be called whatever they want. My boss is African American and lived through the 1968 riots and has been pulled over by the police for doing absolutely nothing but driving his car on several occasions. Not being in his shoes, I can't imagine what he has gone through. So I'm not going to debate semantics. "African American" sounds fine to me.

We had some workers rebuilding the retaining walls around here, and they were going down by the creek and taking a dump because the apartment manager wouldn't let them use the office toilet. Well for whatever reason, my wife's dog took a roll in it. :x That happened on two occasions.

1) The office manager is an idiot for expecting people to work all day without having a place to take a shit.

2) I can't figure out dogs.

Both he and Gandhi had their dark sides, including being pretty sexist. But they both changed the world in profoundly great ways.

And as for Malcolm X - if I had been a black man during that time, I think I'd have been more like him than MLK.
Which is what makes MLK so great.
That he was able to keep his eye on the prize and stay cool in the face of such violent oppression is what made him so brilliant and successful.
And then even Malcolm X changed/evolved to understand that MLK was right,
which is why he was murdered by his own Nation of Islam "brothers."

This thread should be locked. Is this what we want this place to be known for? No wonder racist remarks come up when talking about this place. Just when you think it can't get much lower. This thread was nothing but a bait. Surprised it's still open. Thought Andrew said none od this type of stuff...it may not be that bad yet..but we know what it could become.

Nothing said in this thread can hurt anyone unless they choose to let it. So if they choose to let it, then they are intentionally hurting themselves and should be put in a padded room. :D

I don't see anything wrong here. No one is making personal attacks. Why is any sort of debate about race always called RACIST?

Hi Rad,

I agree that often times MLK day is taken lightly or portrayed as a "black holiday." While there is no doubt that the MLK and the civil rights movement had a significant impact on the lives of African Americans and other minorities, to me MLK day is a day for all Americans, because I shudder at the thought of living in America's darker past, and can't even imagine how awful it must have been being so segregated and divided. One of America's greatest assets and sources of its strength is its diversity. To the end that MLK's work contributed to greater equality and diversity in America, I'm grateful to him for that, and I think that most of us probably are! Happy Martin Luther King Day!

I never said anything about my precious time. I said it was bad enough I was here, let alone my 10 year old son. This place is clearly not a place for a 10 year old. If you want to put your own thoughts as to my intent, I can't stop you. Everyone's time is precious Deano. Mine is no better or worse. Chill dude, chill.

I would love to chill but you know what Liz, I feel like the Tiger who was egged on by those two dipshits in Frisco. Understand. I would love to chill, but when it comes to this place, that particular speed is not an option.
