Every time you mention Arden's name, the Amtrak detective fires up, Dean.

It's the same guy who played the library policeman on Seinfeld.

the weird thing is no number one songs...and just one #1 LP....

Frontiers not #1 is the most suprising---but if i remember right, thriller was at
#1 for like the entire year in 1983???

Herbie LOVED that. He didn't want number one songs. Once you have a number one hit, you always have to chase that song, to try to recreate number 1; and also, number one songs get played too much, and people tire of them.

Herbie may be fat(and fat people rule), but he is a genius.

Maybe so - but it's also kind of like when they say "it's an honor just to be nominated" at the Oscars. It's the easy and classy response when you DIDN'T win. If they'd have had a #1, would they or Herbie being going "Aw, god damn it! Nooooo! Take it away!"

Not too sure he loved it...

HH: "I had never had a number one single with Journey, and that was something that was a big hole in my career. I had reached number two with ‘Open Arms’ and I can’t leave until I get it done."

However,it's true that his managerial philosophy on Journey was this:

HH: "On an act like Journey, a mid-chart hit is more desirable than a real hit. Cause once you have a real hit, and if we ever do have one, then we'll always have to have them. They'll think that you were born by the hits, and you'll die if you don't have one. And that will be true."

Both quotes are from the Castles Burning interview.

I believe you validated my claim in that second quote.

Having a single No. 1 is ok, just not a dozen or so.

Wouldn't that depend on what you are shooting for? Absolutely sustaining popularity after getting a number 1 hit is difficult, but I've no doubt it is a goal that most would try to take on.

Better to have a number of top 10 or top 20 hits than just one #1....

Looking at the way their albums charted,I believe that Journey had a hard time keeping up with themselves! The absolute peak of their career was Escape...then look how the figures decrease.Sure it's part of that natural what-comes-up-must-come-down phenomenon, but part is because they were not capable to match their own Escape performance.

Was it because the pressure was too high after Escape and people were expecting another masterpiece?
Was it because the music scene started to change (although AOR was king in the mid-80s)
Or maybe the downfall happened because the band was losing it's inner chemistry?

Whatever the reasons, after a monster like Escape, the only way was down.At least in the charts.

Herbie's full of shit, he was thrilled to have his number one with Mr big, he was just trying to validate why Journey couldn't get a number one.

Yep, it looks like they climbed up and then back down the ladder. Luckily, they had several years to do that and lots of good songs. if they had done it early on, the lifespan of the Journey legacy would not have been as long. And yes, by that I mean the Journey legacy ended in 1998. :?
"as long as they have to carry DSB as their banner, it looks like Perry will be right there with them as an overseer, ready to wield his veto power on all things Classic Journey." As quoted by Don on 12/7/2010

What?

Mr Big had a number one poppy song. Trust me, Mr Big is worth about a bus tire or maybe two to the Journey machine that was 1983.

What?

By 1983 all journey was putting out was poppy sappy songs 83 was the beginning of the end, 87 was as close to a steve perry solo cd as you could get and then POOF!! Herbie contradicts himself in the same interview saying how he didnt care about the number 1 but then makes a remark how proud he was of Mr. big and i believe another band who got him number 1's, hes full of crap!

Before you acheive your masterpiece you are full of piss and vinegar...hungry...fighting. Once you make it, you don't have the same desire and fight. Going back for 2nds is always good, but not as important...

Dude 83 was Frontiers, you know, their "angular" CD? Separate Ways, Chain Reaction, Only the Young, After the Fall, Edge of the Blade, Rubicon. Even the ballads were good, SHML and Faithfully. I do agree 86 and ROR is a Perry solo record with a great guitar player.

Not leaving you, its just evident that journey went to a more pop sound compared to the rollie years(My guess is a cain influence)come on there highest charting single was utter sap,not saying that was a bad thing for them(i think most rock bands tend to move toward a pop style in their later years) I just believe Herbie was saving face, He wanted Perry in the band because they were not getting enough of a following for the record company to keep them. The goal is to get a band recognized, the quickest way is a number 1 single(thats for any management team--you go for number 1) Him saying he didnt care about a number 1 is like a football coach saying "well, we really didnt want to win the superbowl we just play to be number 2" Every manager wants you to be number 1 or get a number 1 thats the golden carrot If he didnt get his number 1's with Mr big and i think it was roxette he would be wondering what he could have done to get Journey to number 1

Can you dig up any of the chart info for Bad English and The storm?
That first Bad English CD had a lot of hits on it. I know that WISYS went #1. And I think that TPOL may have made the top 10?

Not to mention that Open Arms was "stuck" at #2 on the chart behind Physical by Olivia Newton-John. I've said it before and I'll say it again - how often do you hear Physical these days??

Survivor's "Burning Heart" which stayed at #2 on the chart for something like 4 weeks in a row, would have gone #1 if it wasn't for one of those big charity songs called "That's What Friends Are For" which was sung by like 4 legendary singers.

If not for the bad luck of having to go up against a song that's sung by legendary singers with the profit going to charity, Survivor would have had a second #1 song with Burning Heart.

Another prime example... I wish I heard Burning Heart on the radio back in the day as much as That's What Friends Are For. That friggin' song was on all the time - at least it seemed that way to me. LOL!

The only reason it shipped platinum was the fact SP was back in the band.
