You have got to be joking. He is the God of Music. There is NO ONE bigger. Not the Stones, not U2, Not Zeppelin. Come on dude.

I will never dispute his success, it's undeniable that he was/is huge in terms of his success. But I consider him to be massively overrated. There are a few (and I mean only a few) songs of his that I kind of like, but I'm totally unimpressed by his singing and songs overall. Plus, he's a major asshole to boot.

LOL. FACT-- All those bands you just cited would open for Adams or Billy J today.

Dumb fuck.

Survivor and Foreigner would open for BA or Billy Joel, but Journey are still as popular as BA. Plus, popularity doesn't prove greatness.

Dipshit.

Oooo

Vladan and Journey/Survivor. I know full well record sales do not make the band better, but when you add up, popularity, sales, concert draw, radio play and hits, and all the other intangibles; and at the same time, look the other way too...the bad things...Survivor having a total of about 5 hits, and never being an arena performer on their own; and then look at Journey. They may be as talented as Adams band, I don't know. Neal and Scott are even. Cain can write but IMO not nearly as good as BA. Ross can't compete with Norm Fischer or BA himself for that matter. Yeah, BA plays bass too. Tommy Mandell is every bit as good or better drummer than Castronovo is. Don't believe me, ask the Wombat.

Hey Dean,

Well that's right, I don't disagree with you there. I have seen Andrews post as wel, so it's cool. I also believe Bryan Adams is more well known as well, his songs are played on the radio every single say, there is not a day that goes past that you won't hear a Bryan Adams tune. Survivor on the other hand?... let's be honest, as good as they were, you never ever hear any of their songs, maybe Eye Of The Tiger, once in a blue moon, but these guys are as good as forgotten in these parts mate, they were never as big as BA in my opinion.

I am not a huge BA fan, but when I first heard "Run To You" when I was a kid, that was my favorite song ever.

Truce J/S.

But dude, it's Bryan, not Brian.

One more thing. Here in the US, I never hear BA on the radio, unless it's pop radio and yeah, he's on all the time.

How the Hell did I just pick up 2 votes? I feel like Al Gore in the recount. Is Andrew going to lock this thread just as I am about to overtake you, like the US Supreme Court did in 2000?

Well, and I said this in one of my other posts, I have always said that Perry has the most amazing voice, and Jamison has the best voice.

Perry can hit those high notes that almost no one else can while still sounding like a man, unlike Geddy Lee. Perry has great soul and is an all around great singer.

Jamison can't hit the same high notes that Perry can (although back in the day he could hit some really high stuff) but I like the soul in his voice even better than Perry's, and I like the overall sound of his voice slightly better. Also, Perry's voice did get a little too raspy by the late 80's. Perry on Escape is almost unbeatable, but IMO he has had more decline to his voice over the years than Jamison has.

And then Lou Gramm's not far behind Jamison and Perry.

"Run To You" "Cut's Like A Knife" and "Summer Of 69" are my 3 favorite Bryan Adams songs.

Actually, I still hear several of Survivor's songs on the radio, not just EOTT.

And what does his "prime" consist of? Rocky III and IV?  :P

If you're limiting it to that, you would have to further narrow it down to Rocky IV. Dave Bickler did Eye of the Tiger, better than Jamison ever did, IMO. Jamison never had the edge in his voice that Bickler has, and Tiger can get REALLY cheesy quicky if you lose the edge.

As far as "prime" goes though, I would have to say up through the release of Too Hot To Sleep, circa 1988--which is probably some of the best vocals Jamison ever did. The solo cd in the early 90s wasn't exactly his finest moment vocally or songs, then the voice started going downhill a bit through the 90s.

IMO Jamison's voice was at it's absolute best on WSC. I much, much prefer their THTS album, but just as far as Jamison's voice is concerned, IMO WSC is as great as any singer can ever sound.

Dave Bickler was the original singer on EOTT, and I agree that it's best when sung by him. But I've always thought that Jamison does a great job on it too.

I agree that Jamison's voice didn't sound quite as good on his WLCD album, but he sounded awesome on his Empires album which was from the late 90's. He hasn't lost much.

I'll go 50/50 on When Seconds Count. His voice sounded clearer on that album (and some really good vocals, esp on Man Against the World), but I think his best vocals overall was on THTS. Same thing with Perry...I think his best vocals were on Raised on Radio, even is his pure voice was clearer/had more range several albums previous. At any rate, for JJ, it's a tie between the two. As far as now, Jamison is kinda streaky. He'll have a good night or two, then a rough one. I saw Survivor in 2000 and he sounded pretty rough comparatively speaking, then he sounded great later that year.

Bryan Adams 36 votes
Survivor 25 votes (approximately 15 votes coming from a "terminally ill" mental case in Southern Florida...we think.)

17 votes for that silly last option

If Bryan Adams wants to win, the poll should be changed to Who is the Better Live band, then it becomes a clear cut case in BA's favor. Survivor was fairly good at one time, but are have effectively sucked live since Jim Peterik left in the mid 90s. Bryan Adams was consistently good live. I doubt you would get much arguement from even the most dedicated Survivor fans over that one.

Actually, Survivor aren't missing much LIVE without Peterik. It's the songwriting and in the studio where their greatly missing Peterik.

I'm not as big of a Robin McCauley fan as I am Jamison and Bickler, but he is an excellent frontman.
Sullivan is a great guitarist, be it live or in the studio.
Marc Droubay is a great drummer, I wish he would play a drum solo at every show.
Chris Grove has been playing some really nice keyboard solos at all of the shows for the last few years.

Survivor are still a great live band.

Now, I've only been to one Bryan Adams concert, so maybe it changes from show to show? But when I saw them live they did a great job playing the songs, but there wasn't really much to putting on a show.

Survivor (at least everything I have heard/seen either in person, bootleg or youtube) has been playing sloppy live for several years. They sounded good in the 80s, and some of the Bickler-led stuff in the early 90s was pretty decent, but post 1996-ish, I haven't heard much that is very "tight". I didn't see the REO tour, so they might have had time to gel a bit there, but it's hard to be a rock-solid live band when you do 15 shows a year.

adams had more top five hits in his career than survivor had top forty in its entire catalog of music.survivor had basically four top 10 hits in a few years span.

These singles all hit the top five... Adams
Run to You • Somebody • Heaven • Summer of '69 • (Everything I Do) I Do It for You • Can't Stop This Thing We Started • Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven • Please Forgive Me • All for Love • Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? • The Only Thing That Looks Good on Me Is You • I Finally Found Someone • When You're Gone • Don't Give Up • Here I Am • Open Road

now those are just top five singles by bryan adams.thats not counting the twenty five or thirty top forty hits he had.

The only person I have heard that I could say that sober, with a straight face is Sam Cooke.

Perry's good, and probably the best alive today, but take a listen to Cooke's Night Beat album for a glimpse of what the guy could do with deep material that wasn't just pop fluff, or the Harlem Square Club live album--one of the best live albums EVER. I'm not talking about range (Perry had him beat there easily), but "best" has a lot of intangibles, that basically boils down to soul and passion.

Cooke (along with Jackie Wilson) was Perry's major influence, and this is one time where I would give the master credit over the student. Go find "Lost and Lookin'" from the Night Beat album if you have any questions. It's just about as far away from the Cupid/Twistin the Night Away sound as you can possibly get, and one of the best vocal performances ever.

No. I'll put Jamison over a lot of singers like Lou Gramm, etc. on the basis of his work on Man Against the World, Across the Miles and a few other songs that were fairly awesome vocals, but he isn't better than Perry. If you haven't figured it out yet, I go for the vocal feel much more than acrobatics, and a soul base (Perry) wins out over a blues base (Jamison).

That being said, If you haven't heard the entire Survivor discography with Jamison and are just basing his vocals on Burning Heart, High on You and The Search is Over, you are missing a lot of some of his best stuff. The guy's a much better singer than some of the Vital Signs pop fluff would have you believe.

Survivor had 5 top ten hits, not 4.

Eye Of The Tiger #1
Burning Heart #2
The Search Is Over #4
High On You #8
Is This Love #9

They came close to the top 10 with I Cant Hold Back at #13.
And then they also had American Heartbeat at #17.

I like I Can't Hold Back better than I like High On You, IMO they should have reversed on the chart.

I gave a pretty full list of the songs that Jim Peterik has written that have charted, the list is on page 10 of this thread.

"The Search Is Over" was actually written with Dave Bickler's voice in mind since he was still in the band when it was written.

Besides Jamison, Perry and Gramm, another great singer is Joe Lynn Turner. Turner's not that similar to Perry, but he's very similar to Jamison and Gramm, and even Paul Rodgers.

Now that you mention it, I just picked up the new remastered Rocky 4 soundtrack, and there is an additional song that was originally cut from the film "Man Against The World" listening to it, it does feel rushed and lacks the Rocky feel, I can see why they axed it. Though one take is pretty amazing still.

I do prefer Joe Lynn Turner to Jimmy Jamison though.

JSS may be the premier rock vocalist today, Jamison of the old days.

The other one, worshiped by those who harrass, try to bully and intimidate Andrew, is just a guy compared to the first 2.

ahh, if someone could find the Bickler VS demos.... Does anybody actually know how much was demoed before he left? Better question...you could hear the beginnings of the vocal problems on Caught in the Game (comparing how much weaker his voice is compared to Tiger), I wonder how bad they were on the demos.

Bickler's vocal on Search is Over is considerably different to JJ's take, but he did well on that song. Hearing him at full strength in 1993, he sounded pretty impressive on that song. I still stand by my opinion that The Search is Over is one of their worst ballads however. Compared to stuff like Ever Since the World Began and others, Search just simply falls short.

would you say the same thing if he put out a Bryan Adams cover album?

No doubt JSS could put out a BA covers album, in fact he could nail it. Hell, I do a very good BA, however, the BA band is the tough part to replicate, they are so tight and so gifted.

You have got to be joking. He is the God of Music. There is NO ONE bigger. Not the Stones, not U2, Not Zeppelin. Come on dude.

Define bigger? I'm no great Zeppelin fan but they have sold more albums than THE BOSS, although i would personally prefer to see Bruce in concert...............
