The current draw that Journey is attracting to this show is most definitely an issue. I've already stated the facts here. They're not filling this arena. You might not care, but you will when this band flop-sails into oblivion, because no one is coming to the gigs. Given the fact that this band seems to have thrown it's hat fully into the nostalgia/oldies circuit, the ability to draw people to its shows is PARAMOUNT to success.

Whether or not there is promotion for this show is immaterial. Are people going to it? That's what matters! They're going to have to fill those seats with alot of non-journey fans that they will thrust free tickets on in the casinos. How's that going to look on a DVD when the audience is barely responsive?

Sounded great. I did hear slight diction issues that I'm quite certain will be alleviated when he is fully immersed in touring and no longer really allowed to speak anything but English. Looking forward to seeing TWO shows in Vegas.

Arnel has a very good voice and he is clearly excited to be in this enviable position.. Good luck to him!

Personally, i'm not convinced Journey is gonna come across more than a 'tribute' type band...
The lead singer in Journey (as with many bands) is such a prominent part of the sound and persona. Personally i think Steve Augeri managed to pull the job off and have some credibility.. It seemed a little like going from DLR to Sammy Hagar in Van Halen.. (Not in vocal ability may i point out!!!! just that it worked).
Also it appeared it would work with JSS as he brought his own persona and experience into the mix.

Arnel, and no disrespect to him, just seems like a hired voice.. So long as he sounds close to the back catalog then its ok.. And i guess its so blatant that it lacks the band credibility..

Purely just my opinion....

He is a hired voice, and a damned good one. Those who mock his diction problems, or the simple fact he comes from the Phillipines(of fuck, a foreigner!), have no validity whatsoever. The stupid, lame and flatout tired jokes that were never funny from day one prove that.

Now, did they hire a helluva singer? Yes, absolutely. Did they drop the ball when they let Soto go? Even more so.

So, tribute bad is a bit of a stretch. Tribute bands are bands that play the real bands songs. Journey will be fine selling tickets.

One could argue that Perry wasn't really hired to sing songs other people made famous. That's why there was so much pressure on Augeri, in that he knew the shadow he was stepping into, and the band's future was unclear regarding whether or not they could have another hit with another voice and the absence of one of the primary writers. The expectations were easier for Jeff, in that he was brought in to salvage a bad situation, and in some respects evolve the band beyond the "legacy" expectations. Those huge Perry fans who ultimately warmed up to the idea of Jeff in the band accepted the idea that the band was breaking from that legacy sound. Never before in the band's history, however, has it been so clear what the role of the incoming frontman will be than it has now. The band appears to have made it very clear that they want someone who can replicate Steve Perry's vocals. So to paint Perry, Steve A, JSS, and Pineda with the same "hired hand" brush isn't really accurate.
