Only The Young - Live - Question

Postby youkeepmewaiting » Sat Feb 02, 2008 8:43 pm

A question ive been wanting to ask for a while.

On the few live versions of OTY ive heard Perry sing, he nevers sings the high pinched part in the chorus. OTY is one of the very few Journey sonfs were i prefer the recorded version because of that. Never understood why he didnt do it, surely it isnt because his vocal abilities were not good enough, particually on the Houston tour.

And then when i saw JSS performing it with Journey, JSS sang/attempted to do the high parts of the songs (and all in all did a great job getting most of those notes)

Anyways, dont know if this is a question or a statement .. just wanted to mention it.

you wanna hear an awesome version check out Jeremey and Frontiers version. I love the extras he adds to it. And if you ever see Frontiers live they will open their show with it and REALLY get you going!!! If you dont jump and scream during that check your heart beat. Really sets the tone for the whole show.

While Only The Young is an awesome tune, I don't think it qualifies by any means as a "If you dont jump and scream during that check your heart beat" kind of song. Kick it off with Separate Ways, Escape, Be Good To Yourself, now THOSE would be songs to kick the evening off with a bang. ;)

JSS couldn't sing Only The Young and that is why they dropped it from the set list not long after he joined the band - same with Be Good To Yourself.

He was probably singing it the way it was written. That high end stuff was just a studio trick where he 'layered' tons of vocals then picked whatever came out the best at the time.

I think he could sing pretty good. I have to agree that they dropped it for some better and different songs....

OTY - has a lot of Perry's voice in the harmonizing and background vocals from the studio. It's almost impossible for him or any one to keep your breathing rythym for both parts at the same time . I thought Augeri did a great job with that one.

Have to disagree on that one. Maybe they did drop it near the beginning considering that's a hard one to pull off. But he did an excellent job on Only The Young in his last show (Virginia) from the footage I've seen. And believe me, I'm a harsh critic when it comes to that song, probably my fave Journey/Perry song after Still They Ride. Wish it was on youtube to show ya.

sounds pretty good to my ears... & very nice on my eyes. }:C)) steve perry's voice was deeper during the raised on radio & trail by fire era. jss nails these tunes especially!

There's a vocal-line in the mix that is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS:

At the end of the song, he starts off on a D (next to middle C) on "on", then En for "ly", then G for "the" -

 THEN hits an En AN OCTAVE ABOVE Middle C on the word "young" & sings C above Middle C on "can say" - clear as a bell.

D En G En C C
"On-ly the YOUNG can saaaaaay...."

Also, at the beginning - after the 1st Chorus - he sings a background "ooh" on D above Middle C.
(You may THINK it's a keyboard note, but no....alllll him.)

The couple times I saw JSS with Journey, he knocked "Escape" out of the water and was servicable on "Ask the Lonely." I never saw him do "Only the Young" or any ROR material though.

IMO, JSS was killer on the ROR material.

Never in a million years would I have thought somebody could put such feeling into that song IBAWY and pull it off with the passion Perry did. Gives me chills. :(

Good to know you were there to know this info 1st hand...how utterly ridiculous to say I can't sing any of those songs, why would I have been brought in if any were in question? Do some homework (not high I sang with Journey, how high I CAN sing period!).
